EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION

is a function in which the variable is in the

exponent.
If x and b are real numbers such that b>0 and
b≠ 1, then f(x) = bᵡ is an exponential function
with base b.
Natural Exponential Function

It is defined as f(x) = eᵡ, where

x is any real number. The
number e is irrational and is
approximately equal to 2.718.
1. Sketch the graph of f(x) = 2ᵡ.
x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
f(x) 0.125 0.250 0.500 1 2 4 8
Evaluate the following functions at the given
values of x. Prepare a table of values f(3), f(2),
and f(1/2)
2x + 1
1. f(x) = 5ˉᵡ 4. f(x) = 2
2x
2. f(x) = 42x 5. f(x) = 6
2x
3. f(x) = (1/2)
SOLVING EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION

An equation in which a variable occurs in an

exponent is called an exponential equation.
To solve exponential equation, we use the
laws of exponents. We also use this property
that if x and y are real numbers and if
, then x = y.
1. Solve the equation 64=8 x - 2
x+2 -x
2. Solve the equation (1/2) = 16
SOLVING EXPONENTIAL INEQUALITIES
An inequality in which a variable occurs in an
exponent is called an exponential inequality.

To solve an exponential inequality, we use the

following properties.
x 2x -3
1. Solve 3 > 3
