CHAPTER 4

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

The stylistician wants to show the summary of the two comparative analysis of the two
stories written by Leo Tolstoy using Labov’s Narrative Model.

Leo Tolstoy focused in his two stories more in realization of life and its morals. He gave
emphasis on how humans should give importance for having direction and purpose of life in his
story “What Men Live By”. In what men live by he showed how one’s individual communicate
and have their spiritual behavior to God. While in his other story the “How Much Land Does A
Man Need” he gave emphasis to the behavior of man when it comes to being too greedy or
materialistic.

In presenting the plot, Leo Tolstoy used hifalutin words to make his readers curious and
make the story more interesting about what possible things might happen in the next chapter.
You cannot easily picture of what will happen in the future because of many unexpected
phenomenon. He presented his plot by using a lot of vivid words to make the story more
interesting and he also used bible verses in his story.

Leo Tolstoy used figure speech in his story “How Much Land Does A Man Need” while in his
other story “What Men Live By” Tolstoy used a lot of Bible verses in presenting his story like
"We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He that loved
not abided in death." --1 "Epistle St. John" iii. 14.
Based on the comparative analysis, the stylistician arrived at the following conclusions:

Leo Tolstoy showed his sincerity in both stories he wrote “what men Live by” and “how much
land does a man need” by using a hifalutin words that made his work more interesting to the
reader’s eyes and heart.

In the said story “what men Live by” Leo Tolstoy focused more on the spiritual behavior of an
individual and their communication with God. It very obvious that Leo Tolstoy is a Christian
who follows God’s words because based on the story he uses a lot of bible verses to make his
readers understand the lessons of the story. Though the story may not happen in real life because
he uses an angel and man which are far from reality, still the lessons are still there. He made his
story very interesting by intersecting a total opposite individual’s life. And lastly he showed his
readers that goodness will always prevail in the end.

On the other hand, Leo Tolstoy creates an unanticipated yet meaningful ending to his story “what
men live by”. He ends his story which is far from the reader’s expectations. But still, It is very
obvious in his story that he is showing the real scenario of the society. He focused more on the
behavior of an individual. He presented his story by showing-off his readers that in the end being
too greedy and possessiveness will just lead you to bad outcomes. In this story he focused more
on real-life situation that can still possibly happen nowadays. He also showed the importance of
being contented in life.

Leo Tolsoy expresses his sincerity in each story we had compared. The stories may contain
lessons, but still they have their unique ending which distinguished the one story to another. In
his story “what men live by” he focused more on the word of God and spiritual behavior of an
individual while on “how much land does a man need” he gave emphasis to True-to life
scenarios that can possibly happen in our society and to the characters behavior. The flow of the
two stories is different but still they are undeniably astonishing and effective where literature is
concerned.
