SUMMARY PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION THE BASICS

If you own a small-town bakery, a seller of items on eBay or a manufacturer of

heavy machinery, at some point you will need to transport your goods.
Choosing the best means of transport would mean finding a balance between time
and budget constraints. Ensuring the customer that the goods arrived in perfect
condition.
To choose the means of transport should be considered:
• The budget that is destined for the transport of the merchandise.
• Determine the type of merchandise to be shipped, if it is perishable, dangerous or
not.
• The time it takes to transport the merchandise from the factory to the customer.
• If the product is dangerous, comply with the rules for handling and transporting it.
• If the product to be transported is expensive, it will be sent by sea or land, it is
necessary to consider the purchase of an insurance and this must be agreed in the
terms with your supplier or client to avoid confusion.
• If your cargo is valuable, it may be necessary to use a vehicle tracking system to
know exactly where you are.
• If the product presents damage during transit is quite common, it is generally the
supplier's responsibility to ensure that cargoes are properly packaged and labeled
to reduce the risk.
MEANS OF TRANSPORT
Choosing the correct means of transport for your products depends on the size and
urgency of your shipment.
1. Road
Road transport is cheap, convenient and one of the most flexible means of
transport, but it is not as green as other methods and if you are not lucky, you may
be subject to long delays.
If you plan to transport your products by road, you must take into account the
height, weight and length restrictions.
2. Rail
Rail transport is fast, respectful of the environment and not (always) subject to
congestion or delays. However, it is inflexible and can be very expensive.
The easiest way to send your products by rail is to buy a rail transport package
through a freight carrier (FOC), a terminal operator or a third-party logistics
company. Do not forget to take into account the cost of road transport at the end of
the trip.
3. Air
Air transport is the fastest way to transport your products over long distances, but it
is expensive and not very environmentally friendly.
Air transport is only transported by cargo airlines and by scheduled passenger
aircraft. Cargo agents organize air cargo shipments.
Air freight is usually loaded in kilograms. Keep in mind that you will also have to
incur costs, including management fees, fuel and risk surcharges, Customs fees
and security fees, as well as taxes and VAT, if you are importing. Cargo agents
organize air cargo shipments.
4. Maritime
Compared to air cargo, shipping your products by sea is relatively cheap,
especially if you ship large volumes. However, it is slow and quite inflexible: there
are relatively few ports and you should probably make arrangements to move your
products inland.
Maritime cargo ships are composed of the following:
Container ship: carries 20 'or 40' containers that you can rent
Cargo ships: transport loose cargo
Bulk conveyors: transport unpacked products, usually grain, coal, etc.
Tank trucks - transport liquids
Roll-on ferries (ro-ro) - transport of transport vehicles and passengers
There are two types of shipping:
Line ships operate on fixed routes with fixed schedules
The vagrant ships operate completely according to the demand of the person who
rents them.
