ART ELEMENTS
Describe the following art elements in 2-3 sentences.

1. Line (straight, curved, angular, flowing, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, contour, thick, thin,
implied etc.)
The pitchfork has 3 vertical prongs that are mimicked in the farmers coveralls and in
the window. The board & baton siding create straight vertical lines and the porch roof
has horizontal straight lines. The roofs of the house & barn create diagonal lines

2. Shape (what shapes are created and how)

There faces is oval and the man have a round glasses and opening his jacket is
rectangle. The windows are rectangle and front of house first floor & windows are
rectangle and the second floor creates a triangle shape.

3. Light and Value (source, flat, strong, contrasting, even, values, emphasis, shadows)
There are very bright light in the back because of the contrasting of different light
color in the background. You will see some shadow at the house specially on every
window of the house.

4. Color (primary, secondary, mixed, complimentary, warm, cool, decorative, values)

The color scheme in the American Gothic is fine and basic, the characters clothes are
black, white, and faded blue. The woman’s hair is blonde and shaded. White house is
slightly yellowed because of age and barn is faded red. The trees are shades of green
and yellow, sky is pale blue with just a hint of soft white clouds

5. Texture and Pattern (real, implied, repeating)

There cloths look smooth, pitchfork is shiny, cold and pointed sharp. The man’s face
looks rough from the sun and lumpy with the wrinkles of age and hard work. the tree
in the top of white house is rasping looking

6. Space (depth, overlapping, kinds of perspective)

In this American Gothic painting most of the artifacts touch up with each other. The
hand and pitchfork are in the very front of the painting and we can see that the man
overlap the woman. Its look like that they are away from the white house and they
overlaps the trees.

7. Time and Motion

It represent the scenes of the home and farm liife during the high and late middle age. The
man looking straight in the painting while the woman looking strange at the side unlike to the
man.
