PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE POLICY

EXPECTATION
All students enrolled in courses taught by the Elder Conservatorium of Music are expected to participate actively
and positively in 100% of required rehearsals, workshops, classes, lectures, tutorials and performances.
LEAVE
The Conservatorium recognises that extenuating circumstances may occasionally affect a student’s ability to
participate in a rehearsal, workshop, class, lecture, tutorial or performance. In such cases leave may, upon
application, be approved by the course coordinator. Full details for applying for leave can be found on MyUni.
The following types of Leave are applicable:
Sick Leave. In cases of sickness, an original medical certificate must be supplied within 7 days of return to
classes. Students must make every effort to notify the relevant staff member of an impending absence for
reasons of sickness. Sick Leave will only be approved if the relevant staff member is notified of the student’s
impending absence before the rehearsal or performance in question. The relevant staff member may, in
exceptional circumstances, waive the requirement to produce a medical certificate if they have clear evidence of
illness and believe that the procurement of a medical certificate is deemed unnecessary or impossible in the
circumstances.
Compassionate Leave. Leave may be granted at the discretion of the relevant staff member for cases of family
bereavement or other such occasions where the student has been adversely affected by circumstances which
were unforeseen and legitimately beyond their control. Please note that Compassionate Leave will only be
granted in exceptional circumstances.
Professional Development Leave. Leave may be granted at the discretion of the relevant staff member in cases
where the student has made sufficient case that the activity occasioning the absence is of considerable
professional and educational benefit. Professional Development Leave must be applied for in writing and is
subject to approval.

PENALTIES
Where a student fails to maintain 100% attendance at Chamber Music Workshop they will incur a five (5) mark
penalty for each unapproved absence, this being applied to the final total performance mark for the semester –
ie. after all other assessments have been completed and calculated. Unapproved late arrival or departure before
the scheduled finishing time may, at the Co-ordinator’s discretion, be regarded as an absence.

COURSE STRUCTURE
(1) The weekly Chamber Music Workshop will feature lecture/demonstrations by various staff members and
guest lecturers including members of the Australian String Quartet, and will also involve exploration and
analysis of repertoire supported by selected examples of online performances of these works.
(2) Students will be required to undertake prescribed online listening tasks focussed on a critical investigation of
key aspects of chamber playing, and submit detailed written comments for assessment.
(3) Students will be required to explore and write about repertoire related to their instrumental specialisation

ASSESSMENT
TASK 1

Choose ONE of the two works listed below

 Schubert Trout quintet D667 op 114

 Carl Nielsen Wind quintet in A major op 43

Listen to your chosen work on youtube. Consider the work specifically from a chamber music
perspective and comment on aspects of the style of writing, and the way the composer utilises the
instruments either singly or in combination.
Make observations about motivic interplay, choice of register etc and consider the implications of the
writing in terms of ensemble, balance, blend, texture and structural features etc.
Use the IMSLP score provided to look at the work in detail and give examples, referencing the score to
support your ideas.

(Word count 1500)

Task 1 is due by COB on Friday May 15th (40%)

TASK 2
Design and curate a chamber music program based on a particular concept or theme of your own
choosing. This theme should provide a connective thread that links the chosen works to each other in
an imaginative way.

You will need to submit:

 A curated program of no less than 50 minutes and no more than 60 minutes duration

 A written outline of the theme or concept upon which the curated program is based. (minimum
200 words)

 Detailed original program notes that give insight into the chosen works, and that draw
common links to the central theme of the program.

(Word count minimum 1750)

Task 2 is due by COB on Friday June 12th (60%)

In addition to the two assessments, students are required to maintain satisfactory attendance throughout the
semester at the Thursday workshops.

REPLACEMENT/ ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT

a Replacement/ Additional assessment based on medical grounds. The appropriate form must be used and
submitted within the timeframes nominated in the University policy detailed at
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/student/exams/supps.html . The form would normally need to be certified by a
medical practitioner, although there may be instances whereby an academic staff member will waive that
requirement and will annotate the form accordingly.
2 On compassionate grounds
For information about Replacement Assessment on compassionate grounds, refer to the University policy at
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/student/exams/supps.html
3 On academic grounds
A Replacement Assessment on academic grounds will be offered only when the result is in the 45% - 49%
range and only if it is possible for an individual student to redeem the work involved. In the case of
ensemble, forum or group-based classes a replacement exam would not normally be offered. The
maximum final result that can be achieved for a replacement examination on academic grounds is 50 Pass.
