Abstract :

Textile effluent when discharged into the water bodies not only results in human health issues but also it is
harmful to biological organisms and ecology. Adsorption process using agricultural waste-based natural
adsorbent is a promising technique for textile effluent treatment and to remove hazardous dyes from water.
In this current study, the adsorption of dyes Brilliant Green (BG), Reactive Yellow 145 (RY 145), Malachite
Green (MG), and Procion Brill Purple H-3R (Reactive Violet 1) was carried out using coconut husk based
natural adsorbent in a batch adsorption setup. Adsorption isotherm studies of dyes were done using
Phosphoric Acid impregnated Coconut-husk based Carbon (PACC) and Commercial Grade Activated
Carbon (CGAC). The Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Elovich model were
studied. Adsorption equilibrium data of BG and MG using PACC followed Langmuir isotherm model with
an R2 value of 0.9946 and 0.991 respectively, showing monolayer adsorption on coconut husk based
adsorbent surface. The adsorption equilibrium studies revealed homogeneous adsorption with the
maximum adsorption capacity of 833.33 mg/g and 666.67 mg/g for BG and MG respectively. While the
adsorption behavior of RY145 and Procion Brill Purple followed Freundlich adsorption isotherm with an
R2 value of 0.9877 and 0.9972 respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (q m) values
were 119.05 mg/g and 81.97 mg/g for RY145 and Procion Brill Purple respectively. Also, a comparative
study was done to analyze the efficiency of coconut husk based adsorbent using commercial grade activated
carbon.
