Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(PREPARATIONS)

First of all we need some Fuel for the trip and some passengers on board so before
loading Flightsim, open up the new BLACKBOX LOADMANAGER from the desktop Icon
or Windows Start menu.

Open the options page by pressing the options icon (A) and ensure the settings are
correct as below. Simconnect Must be enabled METRIC system for this tutorial, also
please set FSX to METRIC Select your FS Version... FSX or P3D

This completes the initial setup of BlackBox Loadmanager and you can close the
options window and return to Loadmanager main screen.

(PREPARATIONS)

On the Main Loadmanager screen press the AIRCRAFT Button and scroll down to
select A330-200. Then press the CONFIGURATION Button and select Two Class
Seating (You can also select economy if you prefer)

Now you are in the main payload section of Loadmanager showing the seating and
cargo bays of the A330-200 and we can proceed to loading the passengers and
baggage for our fight.

NOTE: Full details of Loadmanager use can be found in the Quick Start Guide so here
will just show you how to set the load for this tutorial flight.

(PREPARATIONS)

In the View section select PAX/CARGO and GRID as below then you can add
passengers and baggage at will, randomly or by filling each section.

Normally you would take more time with your payload but for the tutorial just click
on Random Passengers and Random Baggage but make sure this selection does not
take the ZFW (Zero Fuel Weight) into the red.

In the grid you can now see the payload something like the image below

We will need 56800 Kilograms of fuel for this flight so enter this number into the
overall fuel box (A) and you will see it fill the tanks in the correct manner.
Finally, click the FILES TAB and Save this loadout for when you load FS.

Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(FIRST STEPS IN FLIGHT SIMULATOR)

We will assume that you calibrated your throttle levers via the MCDU MENU when
you first installed Airbus Prologue, Otherwise YOU MUST DO THIS NOW!

Open FSX as you would normally and proceed to CREATE FLIGHT MENU (If your Flight
simulator opens straight into a default flight then select END FLIGHT from the menu
to take you to the create flight menu)

Now create your new tutorial flight as follows:-

Select “BlackBox Airbus A330-200 EMIRATES“

Select the Airport - EGCC (Manchester)
Position your aircraft at Gate
Press FLY NOW to start the flight

Ok, now we are in the cockpit of our new Emirates A330 ready for a flight to Dubai.
You can use the 2D panels or the Virtual Cockpit for the rest of the tutorial.
Let’s make the cockpit Cold & Dark so we can go through the correct start up
procedure as required.

Shutdown both engines if they are running, set the Fuel valves A & B on the pedestal
to the OFF position

Switch off all three batteries C, D & E on the overhead panel

Finally, SAVE THE FLIGHT and You are now ready to start the tutorial

4 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(START THE SYSTEMS)

First Check that you’re parking brake is set, Press Ctrl + . Or use the panel controls

Now we must re-connect our batteries and get some power to the Airbus.

On the OVERHEAD panel press Bat 1 Bat 2 and APU Bat (Overhead C, D & E) the
Indicator lamps should all now be OFF. This will power the basic systems so we can
start up the Aircraft properly.

So, we can now start the APU (Auxiliary power unit) we will use External Power for
this as it saves battery life. (We could start the APU with our batteries alone but it’s
more normal to start the APU with Ground Power)

With the parking brake on at the gate, you should see the green external power
lamps on the overhead F & G showing “avail” This means we can connect to a ground
power unit.

Press one or both EXT PWR buttons (F & G)

The MFD Screens and other systems will now begin to operate and you can now
monitor the APU Start procedure on the ECAM SCREEN

Now click the Icon for the LOWER ECAM Panel (H) or view it in the VC

5 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(STARTING APU)

This is the LOWER ECAM and you will need to press the APU Button (Illuminated
green below) to view the APU Page. This shows you the current state of the APU and
as you can see, it is not running yet so let’s start her up.

6 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(STARTING APU)

At the bottom centre of the Overhead panel you will find two APU buttons labeled
APU Master and START (Overhead I and J)

First we need to press the MASTER SW “I” to initialize the APU, look again at the
lower ECAM screen... Your APU is now initialized and ready to start. You should now
have Generator, Bleed air and Flap open indications as below.

7 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(STARTING APU)

Press the START button on the APU Panel (J) to finalize the APU Startup

After a short time when the APU Spools up to operating speed, your ECAM should
now look like this, with Generator voltage and bleed air pressure.

As the aircraft is now powered you should switch on the BEACON LIGHTS on the
Overhead lighting panel and disconnect external PWR by pressing the OH Buttons

8 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Programming the MCDU)

Open the MCDU from the views menu or “click spot icon”. It should look like this.

We will need to enter many things into the MCDU such as our weight, Fuel on board,
Cruise altitude. As well as the flight plan itself, so firstly let’s get used to the
terminology.

Most buttons are clearly labeled FLT PLAN, PERF, and NAV RAD for example, so we
will assume you understand these. Down each side of the screen however there are 6
buttons. These are known as LSK’s (LINE SELECT KEYS) these will be mentioned a LOT
during the next stages so to help you understand which is which ….

If we refer to LSK L2 for example, this means LINE SELECT KEY LEFT 2 or the second
button down on the left side. Respectively LSK 4R would refer to the fourth button
down on the Right side

It will all become clearer as we enter the data.

9 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Programming the MCDU)

Now go back to MCDU and press the INIT BUTTON and NEXT PAGE BUTTON

You should now see the INIT PAGE 2 and you will have some orange boxes for ZFW
(Zero Fuel Weight) at the top right on LSK R1.

The ZFW must be entered either by calculating the figure from your Fuel and Payload
screen (ZFW = EMPTY WEIGHT + PAYLOAD) or you can Right click LSKR1, the MCDU
Will calculate this for you. With the ZFW Entered you now have a new set of orange
boxes beneath it on LSK R2, “BLOCK” This means BLOCK FUEL and is in decimal kg for
our example. I.e. 56800 Kg = 56.8 BLOCK, so again enter this manually via the MCDU
scratchpad, or again Right click LSK R2 and the MCDU Will calculate it for you

NOTE: Sometimes messages will be displayed in the scratchpad area from time to
time. You must CLEAR them before entering new data. To do this simply Press CLR
button at the lower right side of the keypad before entering new data

10 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Programming the MCDU)

Now press MCDU “PERF” button to go to performance pages

By RIGHT CLICKING on LSKL1, 2 and 3 you can automatically set your V Speeds for
takeoff as you did above with the ZFW and BLOCK FUEL. You can of course use the
charts and tables from the FCOM to enter these manually.

The V speeds will now appear on your PFD “Primary Flight Display”
V1 in Blue and V2 in Magenta.
These will be your target speeds for Takeoff and Initial Climb

11 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Programming the MCDU)

Now Press the MCDU INIT Button, this will bring up a new screen where you can
FINALLY start entering the ACTUAL flight plan.

First we need to enter our departure and arrival airports.

We know these are EGCC (Manchester International) and OMDB (Dubai

International) so we type these into the scratchpad area as LMML/LFKJ as you see
below, enter this new ROUTE data by LEFT CLICKING LSK R1.

Just a few more details now and we can start to enter the waypoints

12 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Programming the MCDU)

You will see there are a few amber items left to complete before we continue…

You will need to enter a Flight Number the same way you did the other data via the
scratchpad... So as we are using an EMIRATES Aircraft, we will enter “EK001” into the
scratchpad and Left click LSKL3 to set it.

The Cost index is a way of adjusting the flight parameters to economically or quickly
fly a route, it is Airline based and can be any number between 0 and 100. We use an
average CI for this flight so enter 50, by now you should know how this is done...

The next entry is CRZ FL/TEMP. Simply enter the expected cruise Altitude and the
temperature part will automatically display. So enter 390 as we will be climbing to
FL390 eventually and LSK the data into the MCDU.

Finally LSK next to “Align IRS” and this takes care of the accuracy of your flight by
aligning the computers to your current location. Clear the message “NAV ACCUR
UPGRAD” by pressing CLR button.

13 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(The Flight Plan)

You can now press the F-PLN Button and your MCDU should look like this.

There is not much in there right now. Just your Departure Airport, EGCC with the
Airport altitude 257 in feet, and your Destination, OMDB with its altitude of 62 feet.
It shows the straight line distance of the route, 3052 in Nm and also a line that says
“F-PLN DISCONTINUITY” but for the moment you can ignore this. It simply means the
flight plan is not yet complete.

So let’s move on and create our departure or SID

14 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(SIDS AND STARS)

Press LSKL1 alongside your departure airport EGCC. This will take you to the next
screen which is the LATERAL REVISION PAGE or LAT REV.

LAT REV: press LSKL1 alongside “Departure” to select the departure runway.

DEPARTURES: This is the list of available runways at EGCC and we will select RWY 5L
for our departure. Press LSK L2 to select Runway 5L this will open a new page.

15 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(SIDS AND STARS)

DEPARTURES PG2: This is where we chose our departure procedure or SID

There are many SIDS at most airports these are usually set up for a departure in a
particular location, or to avoid overflying towns or hi obstructions and you can scroll
through them with the Up Down Arrow keys on your MCDU,

So If we look at our flight plan (The supplied PDF or on the last pages of this tutorial)
we can see that the first Waypoint after departure is listed as -SID-> DESIG So we will
select this from the list by pressing LSK L2, When you LSK alongside the SID “DESI1G”
it will turn yellow and be temporarily applied to your Flight Plan. Press “INSERT”
LSKR6 to confirm this selection and enter it into the Flight Plan

You can now also see the SID temporarily displayed on the ND

16 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(SIDS AND STARS)

Press INSERT (LSK R6) on the MCDU to confirm the SID DESI1G.
The MCDU will now switch back to the main Flight plan page and look like this with all
your new Waypoints entered for the DESI1G Departure this includes any Altitude or
speed restrictions and constraints in Magenta.

You can now also see the SID is set in green and displayed on the ND

So now we can continue with re rest of the Flight Plan and enter all waypoints by
using the AIRWAYS feature.

17 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(AIRWAYS)

If you again refer to the Flight Plan you can see the main body of the route contains
many waypoints, in fact there are 84 of them!

But don’t panic!

You don’t have to enter each one manually as we are going to fly via the international
Airways. So we will now add the rest of the plan using these Airways

Here is a simplified view of the Flight Plan condensed into the WP’s (Waypoints) that
join each Airway together. Look at them as like being the “Junctions” on the freeways
in the air. If we look at this simplified plan, we are able to see our Departure airport
EGCC followed by the SID we just entered DESIG. We can also see UL603 is next in our
list but this is not a waypoint or an airport so how do we enter this?

Firstly, use the UP/DOWN Keys on the MCDU to scroll the Flight Plan so that you can
see the line WP - DESIG with F-PLAN DISCONTINUITY just underneath it.

18 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(AIRWAYS)

REMEMBER THIS PROCEDURE –

YOU WILL BE REPEATING IT A FEW TIMES!

LSK L1 Adjacent to DESIG waypoint this opens up the LATERAL REVISION PAGE

On the LAT REV PAGE look at the top Right section where it says VIA/GO TO.

This means we need to create a LATERAL REVISION or a “Sideways deviation” from

the current waypoint DESIG this will be VIA “AN AIRWAY” and we will then GO TO “A
WAYPOINT” So we need to enter the AIRWAY TO FLY ALONG and the WP where this
part of the flight plan stops.

19 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(AIRWAYS)

We can see this section highlighted in red below so we enter UL603/BASNO into the
scratchpad and insert it into the flight plan with the LSKR2

Your MCDU Screen will now change to the Temporary Flight Plan Page so you can
review the changes. As you can see (below) all the required WP’s along the airway
UL603 have been added to the temporary flight plan up to our GO TO WP BASNO.
You can scroll up and down to see them all. To confirm this revision and insert them
into the active flight plan you press the LSKR6 key to “INSERT” this section.

Once you have confirmed this VIA/GO TO the MCDU and ND Will update with all the
new WP’s in place.

20 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(AIRWAYS)
Here is the newly edited Flight Plan with our new WPs added.

Now use the arrow buttons to scroll the flight plan to the last WP you entered
BASMO and we will continue to enter the Airways.
(You will need to scroll to the Last WP each time unfortunately but this will be fixed in a later release)

Continue to enter route as you did before for all the Airways until you reach EGMIT

When you get to EGMIT you can see DCT before ORSAR, this is not an airway but
means DIRECT, so you enter the WP directly into the FP.
Type ORSAR into the scratchpad and then press the LSK next to F-Plan Discontinuity
to enter it into the list. Then continue as normal with B416/DEDSI

When you have entered the last WP in this list DESDI we then need to enter our
arrival or STAR. This follows on the next pages

21 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(AIRWAYS)

If you select PLAN from the ND Controller (A) at any stage you can see the new Flight
Plan laid out in track form as you would follow when flying the route.
You can also adjust the RANGE (B) to zoom in or out.

If you make a mistake while entering WPs or Airways you can use the CLR KEY at any
time to clear the last entry into the scratch pad. Or Press CLR and then the LSK Next
to the Bad WP It will then delete it.

If you should totally mess up the Flight Plan you can go to the MCDU MENU and press
RESET on LSK 6L. You will then need to start over from the beginning of the tutorial

22 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

SIDS AND STARS (Your arrival procedure)

Using the same process we did for entering the SID, Bring up the STARS for Rwy 12L
at our destination OMDB. Press LSK L6 for the LAT REV PAGE,

Press LSK R1 for the ARRIVAL PAGE

Press LSK L5 for RWY ILS30L

23 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

SIDS AND STARS (Your arrival procedure)

Finally press LSK L5 to select the DESD6A STAR and Insert with LSKR6.

If all went well you should now see the DESD6A STAR in your Flight plan by scrolling
the list. It should now look like this on your ND in PLAN mode.

This is your almost Completed Flight Plan, but with a F-PLN Discontinuity still there.
We must remove this before using the flight plan by first pressing the CLR BUTTON
we then press the LSK Adjacent to the Discontinuity to delete it.

And that is your flight plan completed!

You might want to save all your hard work now so go to the MCDU DATA Button and
press SAVE ROUTE on LSK R1. Type in TUTORIAL-330 to the scratchpad and enter it
into CO RTE on LSK L1 then SAVE

You may now reload the complete route at any time

24 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
(STARTING THE FLIGHT)

Ok it’s Finally Time for Pushback and Engine Start!

(PUSHBACK)

We will ignore ATC and clearances for the benefit of this tutorial as we are teaching
you how to use the Airbus but Before moving we must disconnect EXTERNAL POWER
so make sure you have pressed the EXT PWR Button (or buttons if you used both)
they should now only show “AVAIL” if the Parking brake is still on

You will need a push back to clear the terminal buildings from Manchester’s Gate 29
in order for you to start the engines and begin taxiing. So release the Parking brake
and press SHIFT+P together and this quickly press 1.

The Pushback tug will move your Airbus back into clear space and turn you towards
the taxiway. Press Shift + P again when you are in position to release the tug and then
re apply your park brake. Now you are ready to start those engines!
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(ENGINE START)

We will start Engine #2 first as this is the practice with Airbus A330.
First open the OH Panel / and turn on APU BLEED, then set BLEED VALVE to OPEN

Now Close the OH panel and open the CENTRE PEDESTAL

Just above the Thrust Levers you will find the ENGINE START PANEL.
(This panel is BELOW the Thrust levers in the VC)
Turn the MODE KNOB to IGN START and set the ENGINE # 2 START SWITCH to ON,
and close the pedestal so you can see the engine start process begin in the display.

Engine #2 is now running smoothly

26 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(ENGINE START)

Engine #1 is a similar process, simply set the Engine #1 switch on the pedestal to start
and once Engine #1 is running you can reset the MODE KNOB to MODE NORM.

Finally we can now turn off APU Bleed Air Just press the button and the lamp will go
off or change. And Switch OFF the APU by pressing the Master Button

Finally switch on NAV and TAXI Lights from the OH Panel

We are now ready for Taxi.

27 www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Taxi and take off)

We will now taxi to RWY 5L so push the Thrust levers forward slightly, JUST enough to
get our aircraft moving and then pull them back to IDLE. Be careful not to over speed
when taxiing, usually 10 – 20 Kts is good.

You will need to use the Steering Tiller for Taxiing; the setup for this is included in the
Quick Start Guide. So Select your Tiller steering and follow Taxiway ALPHA

From the aerodrome chart above we can see the taxiways and after pushback you
should be pointing in the right direction. So follow taxi way ALPHA and line up on the
Piano keys just before the RWY 5L Numbers. If you wish to do this more
professionally you will need to contact ATC for both Taxi instructions and Takeoff
clearance but for the tutorial we will just go as if we have the clearances.

28
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Ready for Takeoff)

Before Takeoff we must set our flaps for position 1 +F (press F7 once)
And set our Cruise Altitude 39000 in the FCU “Flight Controller Unit” Window. It’s fine
to do this while you taxi to the runway. Also remember to turn on your lights now
too. Nav lights on 1 (or 2 for logo light) and strobes to 1 ( auto)

The Alt selection knob can take some getting used to but it will become intuitive after
a few times… Simply RIGHT click to the left or right of the knob to increase or
decrease Altitude by 1000 Feet increments. Or LEFT Click to the left or right of the
knob to increase / decrease in 100 Ft increments. Other selection knobs such as
speed, heading and VSI work in a similar way.

You can also Push and Pull the knobs by Left or Right clicking the Centre of the knob
to change from managed to selected modes. We will cover this a little later but
remember this simple rule.

PUSH = Managed Mode = Give control

PULL = Selected Mode = Take control

29
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Ready for Takeoff)

When we are positioned correctly at the start of RWY 5L we are ready to go. But first
you need to know what all the indications on your PFD (Primary Flight Display) mean.

This is how your PFD should look before takeoff

The important items to check are that you have the ALT Set, QNH Pressure set (This
can be done automatically in FS by pressing “Q” and that the V Speeds are active on
the top of the speed tape. If either NAV or CLB Do not show as below then PUSH
(press) the HDG or ALT knob to engage Managed Modes.

For our Takeoff we will be using TOGA for this tutorial but at a later stage we will
introduce correct FLEX operation. Push the thrust levers to around 50% until the EPR
Stabilizes and then all the way forward to TOGA and guide the Airbus down the
centerline. It is important that you keep a little forward pressure on the side stick to
prevent premature rotation and to keep the nose wheel in contact for accurate
directional control as you accelerate along the runway

NOTE: Thrust Levers.

The Airbus uses DETENTS or “stops” for the thrust lever positions and you can set
these in various ways. The first method is of course to set your throttle levers into
position where you hear the CLICK Of the Detent. This can be a little fiddly as your
hardware probably doesn’t have the detents so we have assigned keys for this.
Pressing PgUp or PgDn keys you can step up or down through these detents easily
and more accurately than with your throttle levers. But it’s your choice of course.

30
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Takeoff)

As you begin your takeoff roll the PFD will change with some new indications

Keep an eye on those V-speeds. These will tell you when to takeoff at your current
weight. At VR (Rotate) Pull pack gently on the side stick until your pitch is between 10
and 15 degrees, The FLIGHT DIRECTOR BARS Will tell you where to point the nose.
When you have stabilized and have a positive rate of climb you can raise the gear and
at around 500 feet you can engage the Auto Pilot by Pressing AP1 button or Z Key.
Your Airbus is now under Autopilot control and the PFD indications will change again.

When you see the LVR CLB flashing, retard the thrust levers to CL Detent
You can do this by pressing PGDN Twice, or by carefully adjusting your throttle levers.
Notice the Magenta 5000 on the Alt tape, this signifies a constraint of 5000 ft and the
AP will automatically comply and will climb again when the constraint is passed.
Don’t forget to retract the flaps when are you passed the S Marker.

31
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(In Flight)

While you are climbing the barometric pressure indication will flash with a yellow
border around 5000 feet. This is telling you to switch from Airport pressure to
Standard Pressure; you do this by right clicking on the BARO knob and the indicator
will stop flashing and change to Standard [STD]

Now it’s all up to the flight plan and autopilot so let’s check the ND (Nav Display) set
the range on the ND to 10 Miles.

Here we can see our flight path as we climb away from EGCC
At the top right you can see the NEXT WP – MAMUL with 18.9 NM to go and you will
reach the WP at 16:00Z. Top left is your GS or Ground Speed (273) and your TAS or
True Airspeed (273) The Magenta dot is the FL 100 (10,000 feet) marker where our
speed restriction of 250 Kts will end and we can climb at our preset speed of 300 kts
until we reach Mach 0.80 where the mode will change again.

32
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(In Flight)

Welcome to the world of commercial flying, the autopilot will now handle the
majority of the flight so we can take some time out to look around the various
systems. You may wish to engage the FSX accelerated time feature to move quickly
through the flight. The BlackBox Airbus can handle up to 8 X Acceleration under
autopilot as it is extremely stable. This will quickly transport you across the sky. We
recommend staying at 4X though unless you’re on a long straight cruise section.

Change the ND Range, this time to full 320 Nm and view the flight plan in the ND

You can see we are flying the route now and climbing to our cruise alt of 39,000 feet.
Normally this would be achieved via a “Step Climb” where we would climb initially to
FL350 and then after burning fuel off for a while climb to FL390. You can do this if you
wish by selecting 35000 feet in the FCU Display. The Blue arrow will move and The
Airbus will level off at FL350 and wait for you to change the selector to FL390 when
you are ready. The MCDU Still has your final cruise Altitude of FL390 set so all you
have to do is change the FCU Dial and (PUSH) the Alt knob to continue the climb.

We should be approaching FL250 about now so please open the LOWER ECAM via
the Panel Icon or FS Menu. We can show you some of the automated features of the
A330/A340 Family. Open the ECAM and press FUEL PAGE on the control panel.

33
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Automated fuel balance)

The lower ECAM Fuel Page

Illustrated here is the Fuel Monitoring page of the lower ECAM System. It has many
pages but as we pass FL255 the computers will continually balance the aircraft for
cruise by pumping fuel from the main tanks into the trim tank in the horizontal
stabilizer This can also be operated manually via the Overhead Fuel Panel but this is
covered in the main FCOM and not necessary for this tutorial. However it is
fascinating just to watch the Airbus do its thing as you climb above FL255!

Fuel goes aft into trim tank and CoG moves backwards

34
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Continue step climb to FL390)

If you didn’t use a Step Climb please go to the next (Cruise) section if you wish.

As you level off at FL350 this should be around the EVELI Waypoint. The Airbus will
settle into a cruise at selected Mach. We will travel some distance at FL350 until our
Gross weight is below 220K Kg. The Airbus will easily climb above FL350 at this
weight but we will use 220K for the Step Climb exercise.

As the weight nears 220 K you can need to the ALT in the FCU to 39000. This should
be around the ARNEM Waypoint, and as the weight target is reached you can PUSH
the FCU Alt button to re engage the managed climb to FL390.

(Cruise)

As we approach the TOC (Top of Climb) at FL390 depending on wind and weather,
somewhere near the SUVOX waypoint. The Aircraft will level off and settle into the
cruise automatically at the selected Cruise Mach.

35
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Cruise)

After a gentle 7 hour cruise (Don’t worry that’s less than 2 hours at 4 x acceleration)

As we approach our descent stage near the EGMIT Waypoint we see a new symbol on
the ND, A White “Hockey Stick” This is the point where we must start our descent
from cruise altitude ready for our landing at OMDB

We will assume we have been cleared by ATC to descend straight down to 4000 Feet
and join the approach pattern or STAR. So In the FCU ALTITUDE Window, we need to
set 4000 ft and be ready to change AP mode when we reach the TOD marker.

DO NOT PUSH ALT KNOB YET!

36
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Decent)

Set the ND range for 10 Miles now and watch as you approach the TOD marker, you
have plenty of time to prepare as when you pass EGMIT you still have around 50
miles to go before descent. As you get closer to the TOD, reduce the range on the ND

When the ND range is down to 10 Nm and the TOD marker is crossing the Last dotted
line (2.5 Miles) You can PUSH (Left click) The Alt knob to enter DEC mode.

You will see the PFD Annunciators change to THR IDLE and DES and your descent path
dot or “The Donut” appears by the Altitude tape. You also have a Magenta altitude
reading called an Altitude Constraint. I will explain this on the next page.

37
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Decent)

Ok we just mentioned the ALT Constraint; this is a preset altitude in a flight plan to
ensure the autopilot abides by its rules at a Waypoint. This particular constraint is
simply +6000 so means we have to be ABOVE 6000 feet crossing the waypoint
ULASO. Others can restrict us to being AT or BELOW an altitude

As we descend the Autothrust changes from MACH mode to SPD mode, this changes
the speed tape and we now have speed brackets. The Autothrust will attempt to stay
between these brackets while the Autopilot will use the elevators to adjust the
descent path and keep the donut within a reasonable range (+/- 500 feet)

You can also check the progress of your descent via the MCDU PROG Button

This page shows us that our VDEV (Vertical Deviation) is just 4 feet under the
intended slope… It’s certainly not always this accurate!

(Decent)

So just monitor the descent for now, we will be joining the selected STAR
At ULASO Waypoint as we descend towards the airport. You may be under or over
the descent path Donut but rest assured, your Airbus will follow the STAR and take
you straight into Dubai ready for some duty free ! If you switch the ND Range to 40
Miles now you can see all of the DESDI STAR Laid out on the display.

Watch for the Yellow BARO display again in the PFD and reset this to QNH when it
flashes

And now we enter the STAR Approach to OMDB

As we join the STAR you can ignore the Donut as Alt and speed are controlled by the
computers. Be ready with the flaps or speed brakes if it starts to look uncontrolled

Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(STAR & APPROACH)

As we enter the STAR, The Autothrust will reduce our speed, watch for the small
yellow = sign on the speed tape as this indicates the next speed below which we need
the next level of flap. So when the speed is at or below this marker, add one notch of
flaps and the aircraft will be more stable for the approach.

As we reach our FCU Alt of 4000 feet the aircraft will level out and our speed will be
around 210 kts this is fine for the moment but before turning for our final we need to
be at around 190 kts and with Flap 2 so PULL (right click) The SPD knob and select
190. The aircraft will decelerate and you will need to add the flaps when you see the
Marker on the PFD as before.
At WP DB507 you will make a 180 degree reverse turn to head towards the runway.
Just monitor the speed and altitude in the turn in case you have to take control. But
you can trust your BlackBox Airbus to do the job!!

40
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Approach and Landing)

After the reverse turn you can allow the autopilot to continue but now you can press
the ILS button on the glare shield. Don’t worry if you forget as you will be reminded
by a flashing ILS in the PFD.

At around 20 miles DME from the ILS we can see a new symbol on the Flight Path,
A magenta circle containing the letter “D” This is a DECELORATION POINT and the
point where the Auto thrust will go into Approach mode.

Before reaching this decal point you should be at 180 kts with FLAP 2 configuration.
It’s at this point where we also lower the Landing gear. As you are already in selected
speed mode you simply need to dial 180 into the window.

41
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Approach and Landing)

As we pass the decal point we now need to select Managed Seed mode again for our
landing so simply PUSH (left click) The SPD knob and the Autothrust will go into
Approach mode. You will also now see the GS (Glide slope) is active so you can now
press the APP button on the glare shield to activate ILS Capture.

If you would like to open the MCDU and look at the PERF PAGE it shows us the
computed speeds for approach and landing at our current weight. It also shows the
various Flap retraction speeds and the flap setting we have selected for this landing.

42
www.blackboxsimulation.com www.facebook.com/BlackBoxSimulation
Blackbox Simulation A330 Tutorial

(Approach and Landing)

As we continue our approach the speed will now reduce to APP speed which is 130
kts as we can see from the MCDU PERF Page. We must increase Flaps as we pass the
yellow = markers until we are I CFG FULL or Full Flap. Now ARM the speed brakes
(Press Shift and /) and set Auto brakes MED on the gear panel

Here we are fully established on the ILS, with Flap FULL, Speed brake Armed, Auto
brakes medium and gear down. 400 Feet is set in the FCU as that is our “go around”
altitude. Landing lights are on, belts are tightened and that’s our checklist complete.

Now listen for the Airbus GPWS.. you will hear the callouts 1000, 500, 400, 300 , 200,
MINIMUMS where you decide to land or Go Around, then 50, 30, 20, and then
RETARD ! On the Retard command. Close the thrust levers to minimum and then
deploy reverse thrust once you’re on the ground. (You may use your throttle levers or
press the Pg Dn repeatedly to enter full reverse) disconnect the Autopilot and when
your speed decays to 70 Kts, set idle thrust again.

You have just experience a BLACKBOX AIRBUS A330 AUTOLAND!

Taxi to the Gate, retract the flaps and shut down as you did on page 1 of the tutorial.
