Petroleum is a crude mineral oil. The literal meaning of the word “Petroleum” is “rock oil”. It is found
deep down below the surface of the earth. Chemists, geologists and exploration physicists work together to
locate oil. Artificial earthquakes are created near the places where they are prospecting for oil. The vibrations
created are then recorded in an instrument called the seismograph. The data obtained helps geophysicists to
locate the presence of petroleum. But the most modern method of survey is the magnetic method. A powerful
magnet is carried in an aeroplane. A deflection of the magnet indicates the presence of oil under the earth
below.
Petroleum cannot be used in its crude form. It is refined by fractional distillation. The three
important fractions are heavy oil, kerosene and crude naptha which on further fractioning give aviation petrol,
diesel oil, paraffin wax, boot polish and tar.
