2. INTRODUCTION

This subject takes place along the second semester of the first course and
introduces specialised terminology as well as the basic grammatical patterns related to
psychology texts and concepts. The course finds its natural place in the degree within the
range of subjects that are partially taught in English. Once they have obtained their degree
– and after having taken the subject English for Psychologists and having passed all the
requirements concerning both knowledge and use of the English language along the rest of
the “content” subjects of the degree –, the students are expected to have attained an
intermediate level of English (equivalent to a B2 level in English within the Common
European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR).

3. RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

Although this is not a “compulsory” prerequisite, an A2+ level (CEFR) is highly


recommended in order to make the most of this subject.

8. TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The course proceeds through a series weekly theoretical and practical sessions
including theory, problems, laboratory and seminars. Different individual and group
activities are expected to be carried out during the term, along the different kinds of
activities (cf. “activity planning” section).

THEORETICAL SESSIONS: Different kinds of activities derived from the textbook


and other materials provided by teachers.

PRACTICAL SESSIONS: Combined with “theoretical” sessions (four hours). Further


activities derived from the main topics, including written tasks.

LABORATORY/SEMINARS: Complementary activities mainly devoted to oral


(reception and production) activities. Whole group and small group participation.

TUTORIALS: Scheduled appointments with the lecturer, in small groups, throughout


the course. Further information on the schedule and nature of these sessions will be
provided in class.

The students are expected to work in class and autonomously, prepare course
materials for each session and keep their work up to date. The hours of class preparation
and course work elaboration are also part of their “individual work” and “exam preparation”
(cf. “activity planning” section).

10. LEARNING ASSESSMENT

10.1 Assessment type Percentage of final grade)

A. PORTFOLIO 30

B. WRITTEN EXAM (test/development/problems) 70

10.2 Assessment Criteria:

• Students must obtain a minimum final course grade of 50% in order to pass this
subject.
• The final course grade is composed of the sum of each assessment item (A and B).
• A deadline will be set for the tasks related to item A at the beginning of the course.
No submissions will be allowed afterwards.
• Students must pass the written exam (scoring at least 35 points out of 70) for their
final grade to be averaged.
• The written exam is compulsory in order to receive a final grade (item A is not
compulsory, but failing to take it implies missing the percentage of the final grade
associated with it)

A. Portfolio

During the LAB sessions the students will deal with a series of oral activities that will
allow them to improve their speaking and listening skills. The students will be asked to
provide evidence of the product of their work along the course via their Virtual Classroom
or any other means suggested by their teacher in due time, and within the time span
allotted in class. Performing the tasks of sessions four and seven is compulsory in order to
receive a portfolio grade. Further details on portfolio tasks and schedule will be provided in
class.

B. Written exam

The students must sit and pass a written exam at the end of the term. It will contain
the kind of activities dealt with in class. The course exam will take place as scheduled
(official dates) within each call.

11. FURTHER INFORMATION

RECOMMENDED RULES OF BEHAVIOUR

– Students should be punctual.

– Students should not enter or leave the classroom once the session has started (without having
previously told the lecturer).

– Students should not eat or drink (except for water) during class.

– No mobile phones are allowed in the classroom (they should not be on the table or in sight).
