Participants will work in various positions at the grocery store including Cashier, Bagger, Stocker,
or Fresh Food, Meat, Seafood, and Produce Clerk. The daily job duties will vary depending on
business need and skills. The job may include using chemical cleaning products. The job may also
entail working in cold temperatures inside a cooler, or working in hot temperatures outdoors.
Participants will be working with pork and alcohol products. Harris Teeter may not be able to
accommodate department assignment requests.

Cashier duties:
- Scanning products for purchase
- Collecting payment and processing transactions
- This position requires a strong understanding of U.S. currency and the ability to work a credit
card machine. Participants must be patient, cheerful, and have excellent customer service skills to
perform this job successfully.

Bagger duties:
- Placing products into paper or plastic bags
- Delivering bags to the customer's car
- Bringing grocery carts inside from the parking lot

Stocker duties:
- Maintaining order and inventory control
- Unloading supply trucks
- Building and maintaining displays per direction
- Rotating and pricing products after stocked
- Cleaning stocking, staging, and common areas
- Breaking down boxes
- Providing quality customer service by interacting with customers to create a positive shopping
experience
- Participants must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and be able to move continuously (standing,
bending, walking) while at work

Fresh Food, Meat, Seafood, and Produce Clerk duties:


- Obtaining or preparing food items requested by customers at deli counter
- Filling orders by obtaining items from shelves, freezers, coolers, or storage bins, and weighing
and wrapping foods
- Decorating cakes and creating party trays according to standards
- Cooking, pricing, and packaging products, and operating approved equipment as necessary
- Following all standards for freshness and preparation

Overtime wage is paid after a participant works over 40 hours
per week. Participants may work up to 50 work hours per
week total. This will be offered to participants upon request,

$150 is required to secure transportation for airport pick up, cost of linens, and a trip to the social security office.
This fee must be paid within 1 week of arriving to the employer by means of cash or money order. This fee is non-
refundable.

Participants are required to submit to a drug test upon arrival. There is no cost for the drug test. Participants who
fail the drug test will not be able to begin employment with Harris Teeter. Participants MUST be able to work with
and handle pork products and wine.

Participants will be assigned to specific worksite and housing locations upon arrival. There are three locations:
Folly Beach, Johns Island, and Isle of Palms. Friends should not expect to be placed at the same worksite or
housing locations and may not work the same shifts. Harris Teeter cannot guarantee that they can accommodate
requests for changes to the worksite or housing assignments. Couples cannot be housed together, as mixed
gender housing is not available.

Brief description of housing: Participants will live in Charleston, James Island, or Johns Island,
depending on the work site assignment. Housing in Folly Beach may be
up to 4 miles away from work. If housing is not within 2 miles from the
store, transportation will be provided at no cost.

Participants have the opportunity to live in nice apartments very close to


the store. Apartments vary in size and will have 2-4 bedrooms. Although
bedroom could have between 1-4 beds, most rooms will have 2 beds
per room. Each participant has their own bed. Two bedroom apartments
have two bathrooms. Three and four bedroom apartments have three
bathrooms. In all units, bathrooms will be shared between 4 and 5
people.

Males and females are not permitted to live together. Apartments are
fully furnished and include basic cookware. Linens and WiFi are
provided as a part of the $150 fee. Participants who end employment
with Harris Teeter need to vacate the housing within 48 hours. Housing
is not available after September 15.

The participant should e-mail Maureen King (mking@harristeeter.com) at least two weeks prior to
arrival to provide their arrival flight itinerary. They will ONLY be picked-up by Harris Teeter at the
Charleston Airport. After confirming their arrival itinerary, participants will be provided with more
information on which Harris Teeter staff member will be picking them up and how to get in contact with
this staff member. Participants will be brought from the airport to their housing assignment.

Employer makes 1-2 airport trips per day and can only pick up participants between the hours of 8 AM
ET and 8 PM ET. Participants who do not provide their travel plans in advance should not expect to
be picked up right away and may need to wait until the employer is available or book a hotel for the
night. Participants who arrive outside of pick up hours may need to book a hotel for the night. Hotel

Please provide a brief description of your community: Mt. Pleasant, Johns Island, and Isle of Palms are
suburbs of Charleston. Charleston has many
restaurants and activities, and is located on the coast.
Johns Island is the largest island in the U.S. State of
South Carolina. It is the fourth largest on the U.S. east
coast with a population of 14,000 people. People visit
the island during the summer for beach activities, water
sports, and fishing. Folly Beach is located off the coast
of Charleston with a population of about 2,000 people.
Tourists enjoy visiting the beach in the spring and
summer to get out of the city.
Is there anything special that students should bring? Participants should bring sunscreen and a swimsuit! It
is usually very hot in the area in the summer and the
employer is located near the ocean. Participants should
pack accordingly for summer fun! Participants should
also be prepared for cool or rainy weather when they
first arrive. A light jacket and a sweatshirt is
recommended.

Due to the coastal locations of the areas where participants will be placed, there are many beach and outdoor
recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, kayaking, hiking, and bird watching.

Charleston, SC is a mid-sized city. Known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, and a celebrated restaurant
community, Charleston is one of America's top cities to visit. There are plenty of historical attractions, shopping,
dining, and cultural events all year long. Hilton Head Island is a popular island retreat for a large number of tourists.
The island boasts some of the best beaches in the country. Golf, restaurants, tennis courts, and outdoor activities are
all available here.

The CARTA offers public transportation throughout the Charleston area. It costs $1-$3.50 per ride, or monthly passes

IMPORTANT: All housing units are NON-SMOKING and participants will need to walk off-property in order to smoke.
Participants will be responsible for any fees associated with smoke damage.

Participants may decide to use bikes instead of walking to reach places of interest indicated above. A bicycle, helmet
and lock will cost approximately $120 at local stores if participants wish to purchase those items.
