Law of blasphemy in the light of Quran and Sunnah ABSTRACT Whoever is blasphemous with reference to the honour of Holy Prophet s.a.w is a scoundrel and an evil force on this earth. The Muslim Ummah agrees to the point that he or she deserves a capital punishment. Blasphemy with this special reference is a sin in itself and there are clear-cut orders in the Holy Quran regarding its punishment. In the verses of Sura Ahzaab and Sura Tauba, the word 'aza' has been used. Aza in arabic means ‘to torture physically, abuse verbally, blame, or use improper or rude language against Holy Prophet (s.a.w). Generally 'aza’ stands for insulting Holy Prophet (s.a.w) in any form. Allah has not allowed any one to behave towards Holy Prophet (s.a.w) in an unbecoming manner. As Sura Ahzab states nobody is allowed to torture Holy Prophet (s.a.w). The Holy Quran states that a blasphemer is to be hanged to death. Holy Prophet (s.a.w) in his life time, sentenced a blasphemer to death. Scholars of all schools of thought in Islam agree to capital punishment as a final punishment for a blasphemer. However they disagree at the possibility of provision of repentance and return to Allah, but they agree if an adult Muslim is guilty of deliberate blasphemy he or she is definitely to be hanged. The blasphemer will be punished according the law of the land. If provision of law on this particular clause is not available even then, the scholars agree, that law of the land is to be followed because according to Quranic teachings a certain system should prevail in a country. This system should be in accordance with Quran and Sunnah so that punishment should be carried out according to Quranic principles.
