SECTION B (50Marks]

Answer all questions from this section.

4. Read the following passage carefully and then, answer question that follows.

The situation in which women are treated badly compare to men is termed as ‘discrimination against
women’. This occur because of bad traditions and customs that exist in some communities whereby
men are heads of families and are also decision makers in each and everything concerning family
progresses. As a result women have no rights to own land, to get education, to be employed and to own
other properties, these are some of the poor traditions which undermines the position of women in
most Tanzanian communities.

The socio-cultural practices which discriminate women should be abolished. This is because if women
are given chance also will contribute a lot in their families, communities and the society in general. This
is why the word ‘GENDER’ is social constructed term which means the roles and responsibilities played
by both male and female in the society. Gender is not the state of being male and female because to be
male or female is all about SEX. Thus, the word ‘GENDER’ is much more expanded in relation to social,
political and economic development.

Other gender concepts includes; Gender Mainstreaming, Gender Stereotyping, Gender Balance,
Gender Analysis, Gender Blindness, Gender Equity, Gender Bias, Gender Equality, Gender Role and
others of that follows a suit. All these Gender concepts should be checked and rechecked so as to bring
about women confidence in doing things related to development in our communities and society in
general.
