Zener Diodes

Unlike ordinary diodes these diodes are used in the breakdown region.

Breakdown region is the region in the I-V characteristics of diode under which
the diode reverse saturation tends to increase very sharply. Two primary reasons
of breakdown are:
1 Avalanche breakdown, is a result of collision of charge carriers that happensunder the
application of very large electric field and usually in lightly doped diodes.
2 Zener breakdown, is a result of high electric fields resulting from the heavily doped diodes
(the breakdown voltage is typically of the order (Vz = 6V )
