Chem 105-01 HW #1 168 pts---Due Tuesday

9/11/2020
Name____________________

1. Classify each of the following as a homogeneous mixture (HO), a

heterogeneous mixture (HE), or a pure substance (PS) (4 pts each)

a._HE___seawater

b._PS___carbon dioxide

c._HO___Gatorade™

d._HE___concrete

2. Classify the following as a chemical change (CC) or a physical change (PC) (4

pts each).

a. _CC________My Prius that rusted away.

b. _PC________Frost on a window.

c.__CC________Flashlight batteries dying.

d.__PC________Helium gas leaking out of a balloon.

3. Classify each of the following statements as a scientific hypothesis, theory, or

law (4 pts each):

a. ___Law______The force acting on an object is equal to its mass times

acceleration.

b. ___Theory_____Matter is composed of atoms.

c.____hypothesis__The Padres will win the World Series in 2020.

4. Write out the two rules which govern significant figures in terms of addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division (5 pts each)

 When measurements are added or subtracted, the answer can contain no

more decimal places than the least accurate measurement
 When measurements are multiplied or divided, the answer can contain no
more significant figures than the least accurate measurement

5. For each of the following numbers, state how many significant figures are
present (4 pts each):

a. ____1_____ 0.300 b.____3______301 c._____4_____301.0

d.____4______6.02 x 1023

6. Use examples to illustrate the following concepts (4 pts each):

a. The Law of Definite Proportions

Water is always made up of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. If we
calculate the molecular weight of water, we come up with 18 g/mol. In 1 mole of
water, there are 2 grams of hydrogen and 16 grams of oxygen. By weight, we have
a percentage of 11% hydrogen and 89% oxygen in one mole of water. This
translates into a ratio of 1:8 of hydrogen to oxygen in water.

b. The Law of Multiple Proportions

The weight of hydrogen which combines with 1 g carbon is 0.252 g in ethane and
0.224 g in propane. The ratio of those weights is 1.125, which can be expressed as
the ratio of two small numbers 9:8.

c. Exact number conversion factors

12 in = 1 ft or 12 in/1 ft (In this conversion, 12 and 1 are both exact.)

7. If a cheetah can run 63.0 miles per hour, how long would it take to run 800.0
meters (8 pts, show your work to receive full credit!) ?
Conversion factors: 5280 ft = 1 mile 60 min = 1 hour 60 s = 1 min
2.54 cm = 1 inch 12 in = 1 ft 100 cm = 1 m

Answer = 28.40 sec

8. Liquid nitrogen boils at 77.2 K. What temperature in oC? What temperature in

o
F? (8 pts, show your work to receive full credit).

temperature in oC = -195.95
temperature in oF = -320.71

9. Fill in the gaps in the following table (1 pt per blank). Assume the element
is neutral unless otherwise noted....

Symbol Na+ N Fl
Protons 11 7 9
Neutrons 12 7 10
Electrons 10 7 9
Atomic # (Z) 11 7 9
Mass # 22.98 14.006 289

10. Identify whether the following statements are True or False. If False, you
must correct the statement to make it true (5 pts per problem).

A. __True___ The modern periodic table is arranged in order of increasing

atomic number.

B. __False__ Metallic character increases across a row of the periodic table.

C.___False__Atomic size increases down a group and increases across a row.

D.___True_ Reactivity decreases down a group of the periodic table.

11. Give an example of (3 pts each):
