ASSIGNMENT II

Name :- GUNASINGHA DS

Index No :- EGT/16/439

Department :- Engineering Technology

Field :- Construction and Building Services

1. Identify the Energy audit background info
 Location
K. J. Somaiya College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Kopargaon, MS, India.

 If it’s a whole institute or selected number of buildings or one building?

Case study says that it’s a complete survey of power consumption in the College but
according to data they collected, audit was conducted for lighting, fans, computers, Air
conditioners, single phase, three phase water pump and the laboratory equipment and
their power consumption in Science building, ladies hostel and administrative building
only. So no enough data to conclude the audit has been done for whole institute.

Figure 1 Location of the institute (source from Google Map)

 Aims of the case study?

 To ensure the present energy consumption pattern of institute.

 To suggest the suitable energy conservation measures for minimizing the power
consumption in the college.
 To identify the opportunities to generate energy.
2. How the Energy Audit was conducted?
 Summarize steps and provide comments, if the given procedure deviates (changes)
from the procedure outlines during the lecture.

Mainly there are 5 steps to conduct an energy audit. These are,

1. Pre-survey information and data collection

2. The walk-through (building) survey
3. Analysis of the data collected
4. Formulation of energy-saving solutions
5. Reporting of results.

System Studied During Energy Audit has been followed these steps same as the lecture,

1. MSEDCL monthly electricity is studied and audited.

2. Lighting system in campus is studied and illumination is measured. Motor pump set
measurement and study. UPS load measurement (harmonic measurement at UPS input
and main feeder after MSEDCL meter). Split air conditioner operation
3. Analysis of the data collected
4. Study of energy utilization requirement for energy saving opportunities is identified
5. The identified saving opportunities are summarized for review and implementation

In the case study there is no detail mention about the enough pre survey information;(ex)

 Drawings
 Number of floors
 Building gross area
 Air - conditioned area
 Non - air - conditioned area
 Climate Zone
 Buildings
 Constructed and installations years of buildings and equipment

And data collections stage during the walk through survey. However, the project team: Godrej’s
Green Building Consultancy Service and Ingersoll Rand, has gathered all the relevant details and
the audit was done.

The drawings have not been considered for green concept implementations
suitability study and main AC Systems, windows without protective glazed, upgrade of
the green rooftop were not properly in detail studied. In additions to that How the
monitoring was conduct and verification of the data not shown in the report. This will lead to
understanding problem of data for someone else who doesn’t have much knowledge about energy
management
3. Calculations

Page 22 Table 01:

Some of assumptions are not made and clear for replacing T8 fluorescent tube instead of
T12 fluorescent tube. It should be clearly mention and consider
 Average cost per Tube & Choke because its performance will depend on cost.
 Life span of T8 & electronic choke.
 Average lumins(Lux) intensity for workable area.
 Wattage differences between T8 vs. T12 and Electronic choke vs. Inductive choke.
 Pay-back period has been determined assuming 1KWH= IRs9.65

Page 23 Table 02:

 Overloading calculation is wrong. Its 135%
 It has been assumed 3Hp motor is Working 3000 hr per Year. (8hr/Day)

Page 23 Table 03:

o Cost for replacing LCD monitor instead of CRT was not considered when
calculating pay-back period.
 Proper assumptions must be included (It has been assumed monitors are working 8hr
per day) 8hr may increase when research and exams are done so it is better to take a
average from studding past few years Utility bills data
Page 23 Table 4

• Wattage of ceiling fans in ladies’ hostel are made a calculation error. It must be
corrected as;

• Wattage of ceiling fan

In ladies’ hostel = 17×60=1020, So Total wattage must be jested as

4440+1020+1800 = 7260.

• Exhaust fan total wattage is missed when recording the total wattage, so it has been
made a observations error on the row.
Page 24 Table 05:
• Exhaust fan total wattage are not including when representing the Graphical Presentation on
Load Mix

Page 24 Table 07

• In the water Pump Load measurement 3HP pump is 0.29kw in the table it must be corrected as
5.29KW

4. Energy saving measures.

 Detail how many energy saving measures suggested/recommended with this study

Recommendations:

1) Chairman cabin and administrative office is recommended to provide key tag switch to
avoid unwanted operation and wastage of electricity.
2) T12 tube light and magnetic choke is recommended to replace with energy efficient T5
and electronic choke to conserve energy.
3) Submersible pump set is recommended to overhaul after three months to avoid
wastage of energy due to poor performance.
4) Motor pump set is recommended to provide power capacitor.
5) It is strongly recommended to insulate and seal inside space of IR spectrophotometer
and UV visible spectrophotometer cabin from outside to arrest loss of reconditioned air.
6) Air conditioner shall be operated between temperature range of 23-25C to maintain
lower cooling load on compressor to save energy.
7) Submersible motor found overload which need urgent repairing.
8) Voltage and current harmonic measured are beyond permissible limit which needs
harmonic mitigation treatment.
9) CRT monitor of PCS are recommended to replace with energy efficient LCD monitors
to conserve energy.
10) Solar energy application is recommended for battery charging of UPS.

5. Critical question – if you are to conduct an energy audit for a similar situation, how
would you conduct your Energy Audit in order to recommend additional energy saving
measures and upgrades?

Bellow steps and method will be applied in addition to all the step they followed.

• Observe all the utility bills over past few years to understand usage of energy & average
of use for more reliable and correct analyzing as well as correct predications.
• Make many different types of scenarios and calculate the power usage theoretically for
best and energy saving and cost effective method from all
• Study all the drawings to modify architecture and implement green building concepts to
minimized energy consumptions and generate energy like increase Solar Energy
generation and usage, Increase Rain water storage & usage, Increase of Natural
illumination, reduce heat gain and heat losses at relevant places, Increase natural
ventilation, etc…
• Analyzed building strategies to adapt BMS for the institute with smart tech.
• Finder.
• Will be used more understandable statically methods to Analyzing and representation the
collected data

Suggestions

• All the individual areas lux demands will analyze, according to that LED, T5&T8
will replace depending on the management requaments other than replacing all
the T12 into T8,
• Proper insulation in laboratory facilities will reduce wastage of AC system power
usage.
• LED monitors will be Replaced inserted of LCD monitor
