Avid Archive™ solutions are the most cost-effective method for long-term storage of
media assets in an Avid Unity™ environment. The necessity to easily find and restore
media, the ability to leverage storage with different access speeds and capacities, and
the choices for removable media and robotic libraries and management software are
all becoming important to media production facilities. The complete Avid® archive
workflow integrates the SGL FlashNet archive management software as well as
StorageTek library systems sized and specified for the individual facility’s archive
requirements.

Avid Archive Solution: SGL and StorageTek

With SGL FlashNet archive management software and StorageTek
robotic tape libraries integrated into the Avid nonlinear workflow,
Avid helps customers achieve a total solution from capture to
backup and archive. The SGL FlashNet software offers a powerful
plug-in to the Avid Unity system that enables the archive to
appear as a simple, large extension to the workgroup. Capacities
of StorageTek robotic libraries range from as few as 30 slots to
several hundred thousand slots, with capacity into the millions
of hours of DV25. Avid recommends a choice of tape libraries that
fit into the end-to-end workflow as part of the total archive solution:
The FlashNet software works directly with the Avid Unity
TransferManager system. The user can send material to the
StorageTek archive right from the Avid desktop by simply using a
dropdown menu in the Avid editor. The user highlights one or more
clips/sequences from the bin, then selects “Send to Workgroup-
>Archive to SGL” from the Bin menu or Transfer menu. Restoring
media from the archive is accomplished easily at the desktop using
an Internet Explorer plug-in offered by SGL and the Avid Unity
MediaManager production asset manager.
