Georgia Today

• This is what Georgia looks like now.

• However, it didn’t always look like this.

• When people moved into this state a long


time ago, there weren’t any parks, stores,
cars, or buildings. There was no electricity!

• But people did live here. Native American


groups lived here way before we did.
The Beginning of GA
A very long time ago, the Creek and Cherokee Indians lived in Georgia.

• James Oglethorpe was apart of Parliament in England.


• People in Parliament create laws.

• He had compassion for people who were in prison because of


debt.
• People who care about and help others have compassion.

• He started a colony in North America so people can have jobs.


• A colony is a placed ruled by another country.

• James Oglethorpe and the colonists


traveled from England to North America
by boat.
• They chose a place near the Savannah
river to put up a settlement.
• A settlement is a community started by
people from another land.
• He reached out to the Creek tribes, like
Tomochichi, to build settlements in
Georgia.

Mary Musgrove

• Mary Musgrove’s mother was Creek and her father was English.
• She was able to speak both languages.
• She became Oglethorpe’s translator. She helped him talk to and
make friends with Tomochichi.
• Musgrove was dependable because the Creek and English knew
they could trust her. They relied on her to help them speak with
one another.

up a trading post for
the English and Creeks
to trade different
items.

metal tools and cloth.
Tomochichi
Tomochichi

• He was a Yamacraw leader, or mico


• The Yamacraw had respect for him because he was honest
• To welcome James Oglethorpe to the land, he gave him a gift. He
gave him bison hide with an eagle painted on it.
Tomochichi

• Tomochichi helped keep peace between the settlers, the Creek,


and the Yamacraw.

• He also thought it was important to learn the language of the


settlers. Tomochichi asked Oglethorpe to teach English to
Toonahawi, Tomochichi’s nephew.

• Tomochichi asked settlers to help him start a school for Yamacraw


children.
