What is a force?

A force is a push or

A force can change

the way an object is
moving.

Position

Position is the place

where something is
located.

of the laptop in the
picture?
Motion

• You need force (a push or a

pull) to put an object in
motion.

• Motion is a change of
position. When something
moves, it is in motion.

• This bus is in motion.

Direction

• Direction is the path of a moving object.

• Things in motion can change direction.

The golf ball is moving in a straight

path. If something touches it, the
direction of the golf ball will change.
Speed

How fast an object moves or how

far it moves in a certain amount of
time is its speed.
Things may move fast or slow.

Think about bikers in a race.

One biker moves faster than all the
others.
The biker moves with the greatest
speed.
That biker wins the race.
Which biker has the greatest
speed?
Friction

Friction is a force that slows

down objects when they rub
against each other.

Friction causes the objects to

get warmer.

An example of friction is when

you press on the brakes while
riding a bike.
