 What does the poem convey?

The poem is a three line and three stanza form that is a part of the Confucian Odes
composition or books. It is by far included in the old tradition of Chinese people way
back Confucius age where women are being arranged with family dates and even
marriage. The girl in poem make it sounds that she will try to accept her suitors while
there is time. It sounded like she does not like the idea and old culture of arrange
marriage the only salvation she has was the hope of finding a genuine man that is not
rather chosen by her parents.

 Literary Devices

o Rhythm – since the poem were just a short type of composition, it includes
rhythms at least keep up to the interest of the readers. It is visible that repetition of
Plop falls the Plum give rhythm to the poem.

o Imagery – The use of simple things like plums and baskets definitely give
imagery to the poem. It gives symbolisms and such so it can incite the interest of
readers. Plums for example symbolizes the patience of the girl in the poem.

o Allegory is one of the literary devices being use because the use of metaphors and
imagery directly interacts with characters in the story. The plums interact to the
thoughts of the girl and the basket represent her desire for such suitors.

 What does the poem convey?

Based on the Elms handouts the poem is in a two-stanza form that is a part of the
Confucian Odes composition or books. The poem is a tragic love conflict between the
speaker and Chung Tzu. The writer expresses his unconditional love to Chun Tzu while
also worrying about how or what could his family be thinking about their relationship. It
was an inner conflict between the writer’s endless love for Chung Tzu and his self that
are very cautious of how or what people will think.
 Literary Devices

o Rhythm – The poem emphasizes the over and repetition of the phrase that
includes the name of Chung Tzu. It gave the poem a sense of rhythm that took a
better turn in giving this poem a more emotional feel to it.

o Imagery – The poem taking advantage of the things around their house while
describing their tragic love story is one of the good things this poem has in terms
of imagery

o Allegory – Since metaphors and imagery exist inside the poem and it is regarding
the things that happen in the relationship of the writer/speaker and Chung Tzu,
evidently allegory gave it a decent form in terms delivery of its meaning.

 What does the poem convey?

Based on the Elms, the poem was about 2 stanzas with very short structure. The
poem was about the peace and order of oneself. Since this poem is created during the age
of Confucianism, may be writer itself is contemplating that how is nice to meet your
inner peace and order. The writer was seemingly disturbed by how a person can endure
such noise of living. He strives to get to another type of place where he can be of true
slumber with happiness and peace.

o Imagery – Since the poem is about human and inner peace, it is visible that the
writer had use different things represent such concept and tries to be more artistic
in describing his inner thoughts and opinions inside his piece or poem.

o Metaphor – The poem has several usages of the natural ecosystem as a way to
compare the writers desire and opinion about things in life. He gave life to the
poem just by trying to relate how life should be in a manner of metaphors.

o Allegory – Since the proper way of life is being tackled, the writer took advantage
with the use of allegory. Allegory help the poem to have complete interaction
with imagery and metaphor in regards to the ideal, principle and opinions being
express by the author.

 What does the poem convey?

Based on the elms the poem was around one stanza only with short lines. The
poems meaning revolves around the thoughts of a way who misses her husband who
are on a far away travel or work. The writer or speaker in the poem was lost in his
thoughts while missing her special someone. It also expresses the faithful and
endless love of the wife to her husband who are very far away from her side. The
other half of the poem would also be sometimes be transfer the thoughts of the
husband who misses his home and wife. They are both lost in lonesome for each
other.

 What are the Literary Devices/Figures present in the literary text?

o Rhythm – it was very present every other stanza or skip that there are rhymes on
the last syllables of the poem. It gave the poem a calming and entertaining feel to
it while being able to express the sad theme that the possesses in regards to the
characters thoughts.

o Imagery – The used of different peaceful elements while providing sadness and
lonesome certainly gave the poem character and uniqueness. Verbal use of this
imagery while being artistic gave the poem much better presentation.

o Personification – this is present when the wind chose to talk to the wife who are
very lonely. It gave life to that element of the poem and writer.

 What does the poem convey?

The poem based on the ELMs was around one stanza only with a standard length
of line. The meaning behind this poem is all about a wanderer or a writer who is traveling
around at night contemplating to things like direction of his life. It was visible that he is
conflicted with what his life and how should live it. Given that this writer inside the story
is struggling to find his fame, he was very much comparing his life with nighttime with
no definite path.

 What are the Literary Devices/Figures present in the literary text?

o Imagery – Since the poem is in the setting of travelling, the writer took advantage
of this journey and tried to use different imagery. Each imagery provided are
seemingly connected to his thoughts.

o Personification – it is shown that he compares his life and travels to the wind that
has no definite direction, drifting and wandering. He was very much taking all
these elements together with his personality to give the readers a very much close
idea on how the writer would look or feel to be.

o Allegory – All this imagery, metaphor and personification is in sync to form a


sad and lonely theme inside the poem.
