Cooling Tower

Introduction

Type of Cooling towers

How it Works
Cooling Tower

A cooling tower is a specialized heat ex-changer in

which air and water are brought into direct contact with
each other in order to reduce the water’s temperature.
As this occurs, a small volume of water is evaporated,
reducing the temperature of the water being circulated
through the tower.

Types of Cooling Tower

1. ) Natural Draft Cooling Tower

In natural draft cooling towers, air flow is obtained by

pressure difference obtained from its structure i.e.
chimney effect. Warm and moist air (less dense) after
heat transfer will go out of the cooling tower to the
atmosphere, creating to flow in fresh air (denser). The
flow of air occurs due to the density difference between
the warm (less dense) air inside the cooling tower and
relatively cool (denser) ambient air outside the cooling
tower.

2. Mechanical Draft Tower

the air is moved by power-driven fan motors to force

it go through the tower.

Mechananical Draft Tower have 2 types

a.) Induced Draft towers

b.) Force draft Tower

Types of Cooling Tower

a.) Induced Draft Cooling Tower
the fans are located at the discharge and pull the air through the
tower. Air enters the sides of the tower at low velocity through large
openings and passes through the fill, whereas the hot humid air is
exhausted to the atmosphere through the ventilator. This maintains
the tower at a negative pressure which reduces leakage.
Types of Cooling Tower

b.) Forced draft Cooling tower

the blower type fans are mounted on the lower side of the
tower. Though these fans consume less power as they operate
in cooler air, such a design has the disadvantages of air
distribution problems, leakages and re-circulation of the hot and
moist air back to the tower.
