What is an ILS approach?

An ILS approach is an approach where your plane heads down a pre-


configured glide slope at a -3˙ Pitch towards the runway. Before
commencing an ILS approach, the runway needs to be valid.

General Information:

▪ Instructions marked with * are obtainable from ILS Charts found


on the internet
▪ CRS / Course is the same as the arrival runway heading

Regular ILS Approach


1. On your Descent do these 4 things:
i. TUNE The corresponding ILS Frequency*
ii. SET the Runway Heading (Only if you’re not using it now) *
iii. SET the Course Heading on the F/O CRS and the Captain CRS*
iv. SET the MCP altitude to the ILS intercept altitude*
2. Right before you get on your final your Flaps should be set to preferably 30
3. Your Autobrake should also be set at that time (2 for a regular runway e.g.
Stansted/Gatwick and 3 for a shorter runway)
4. Once you get onto the final you should do these 6 things:
i. SET Cabin lights set to Takeoff/Landing
ii. SET Cabin landing announcement
iii. Landing Gear DOWN
iv. Runway Turnoff and Landing lights ON
v. VOR LOC ON (When This diamond starts to move and is pink)
vi. APP ON (When this diamond starts to move and is pink)

5. DISCONNECT your LNAV / VNAV / Vertical speed if you haven’t already done so

6. SET your landing speed from INIT REF in the FMC

7. DISCONNECT your whole autopilot at 100ft so that you can be ready to flare
