Moving into an on-campus dormitory for the first year (or years) of your college

education used to be standard procedure. But in recent years, the rising cost of tuition

coupled with an uncertain economic future has led to an increase in the number of

students who choose to live at home while they study. In fact, according to

Forbes more than half of all American college students are opting to room with mom

and dad during their undergraduate degrees, and the New York Times credits this

trend as one of the reasons that Americans are paying less for college than in the past.

The Pros and Cons of Living at Home During University

Pros:

1. Savings
The number one reason to stay at home while you study: savings. Your
childhood home may seem boring now, but you'll miss the comforts of home
and will pay a premium to do so. Students who opt to stay home during their
studies are often able to leave school with lower student debt than those who
lived on campus, and they never had to deal with a passive-aggressive
roommate or a late-night fire drill. 🤣
2. Support
If you have a good relationship with your family, living at home has the added
benefit of providing you with a built-in support network. Moving to the dorms
can seem exciting but for many students the stress of leaving home, starting
classes, and meeting dozens- if not hundreds of new people- can leave them
feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Your family may not be perfect, but don't
underestimate the value of a home-cooked meal after a full day of labs or a
hug from your dad after a stressful exam. 🤗

3. You can focus more on your studies

Obviously, not being burdened by concerns such as cooking and cleaning leaves
plenty of room for long, uninterrupted study sessions. You’re also much less
likely to be distracted by flat mates asking you to come out for a few drinks the
night before your deadline. 🧐

Cons:

Obviously, living at home isn’t always going to be ideal – so it’s worth bearing in
mind the following before you make your decision:

1
 You won’t get the same sense of freedom as your fellow students who are
living in halls or a house share. You may be an adult in the eyes of the rest of
the world, but your parents will probably still see you as a child, so might not
be too keen on letting you come and go as you please at all times of the day
and night. 👻
 You may find that your university social life is a little more limited as a result
of this. It’s harder to get involved in late night social events if you have to get
home at a reasonable time and not wake the whole household. 🤒
 Halls of residence and student accommodation tend to be closer to the
university, while your home might well be commute or long walk away from
your uni campus. You should factor in the costs of your commute and also
think about how much time you’d need to allow to get to lectures in time. 😪
 This means it might be harder to make friends. You’ll have to try harder than
those who live in halls and are surrounded by other students day and night.
Joining societies and clubs or volunteering can be a good way to meet people,
but if they hook up in the evenings you might not find it so easy to join in. 🤩
 Living at home can also put a bit of a dampener on your love life. Few people
will want to bring a new partner home to their parents’ house, and it might not
go unnoticed if you fail to return after a night out. 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨

The pros and cons of living alone

Living alone is a situation where you will be staying all alone and taking care of
things, like food, finances, bills and other requirements all by yourself. In this
modernized society living alone can be considered as complete freedom over one’s
decision with their life. In the process of living alone, a person can understand
the importance of their own decision. Most of the people might consider it as a
selfish decision that involves only one individual, but actually, living alone is a
selfless decision one can take.

Cons:

1. Expenses: Most students choose to live at home in order to gain independence, but

parents are really struggling to pay (or can’t even afford) the expenses of a new

household such as utility bills, rent and loan payments. In other words, even though

2
you can throw parties every weekend because it’s your place, you probably shouldn’t.

2. Lack of company: Coming home to an empty apartment is not always easy to

follow. As it is quite obvious that when a person decides to live alone, then a possible
possibility is that a person might be completely alone. Most of the people enjoy being
alone, but not most of the time. There are certain things which people like to share
with other people. But when a person lives alone, it is not possible to do things with
others. Therefore, when a person stays alone, then it’s quite obvious to feel the lack of
company. All in all, there will be no one to greet you and make you a cup of tea if you
have had a particularly rough day. 🥺😢

3.Autonomy: Finally, don't underestimate the value of setting off on your own.

College is, ostensibly, about earning a degree, but it's also a time to learn how to be

independent. Staying home may mean savings and healthy home cooking, but it also

means you'll have to follow house rules and won't have the chance to learn on your

own. Part of the college experience is learning the hard way that blowing your student

loan on a Playstation at the start of the semester means eating potatoes and vitamin D

for the rest of the month. 🥴

4. Lack of safety: When a person decides to live alone in their place, then they need
to be sure of safety in that particular place and that is because it is the first and
foremost thing to consider while living alone in one place. And eventually, lack of
safety can create greater issues. Therefore, it is always better to be in touch with one’s
family and friends, so that one can feel secure with and safe even after staying far
from their loved ones. 🎃

Advantages of Living by Yourself or Living Alone: There are several advantages of

being lonely, and the most important one would be living all by themselves. When a

3
person decides to live alone in a house or own a place of his/her, it can be the most
exciting decision of their life.

1. No cleaning issues: When you live alone, the only person you have to clean up
after is yourself. On the other hand, when a person lives with another roommate or
other fellow mates, then at that time the most common problem one can face because
of their roommates would be their cleanliness issues. As there are many disadvantages
of cleanliness, some people are very clear about and maintain hygiene and cleanliness,
but some others don’t want to be clean or don’t want to keep their stuff clean. At that
time, both roommates might face some sort of issues between them and this can lead
them to fight more often. 🤫

2. One can enjoy the silence: Most of the time living alone can provide calm and
composed energy to a person, but in another format of living with people can create a
little less of all that. Therefore, it is quite obvious that when a person decides to live
alone, then he/she might experience some sort of calmness and silence in their life.
And such type of silence can irritate some and some can even enjoy the silence in
their life. It is up to a person living alone whether he/she enjoys the silence of being
alone in their house. 😋

3. Can eat anywhere: It is very much obvious that when a person lives with people,
whether it is family or friends then they should live with the expectation of all those
people. But on the contrary, when a person decides to live alone, then these issues can
be ignored and one of the best things that can happen while living alone would be that
one can eat anywhere in their house. 🤐

4. No more rules: Most commonly when a person decides to stay alone all by
themselves, then one of the best things that can happen in his/her life is that people
can enjoy his / her life without any interference. There won’t be anyone to tell one
what to do and what not to do. Therefore, being alone and living alone can provide

4
inner peace and freedom for designing their own life. One can live and create their
own rules for their life without even thinking about others’ opinions. 🥳

5. Only one’s decision matters: It is clear that living alone can let one take their
decision without even others’ interference and this type of decision making makes
one feel good about themselves. Therefore, when a person moves to a place where
he/she decides to live by themselves, then they will definitely receive some sort of
freedom in their life. The freedom of making their own decision, choosing their needs
and wants and living as per their own like. 🤙

6. No need to share anything: People might have heard that sharing means caring,
but when it comes to living with others and especially with those who don’t believe in
sharing and who even like to share their stuff, then they must take up a decision of
living alone and that would be best for all. It is actually true that when a person lives
by themselves, then he/she doesn’t need to share any of his / her stuff with anybody.
💪

In summary, there are pros and cons to both staying and home and leaving on your
own– it’s up to you to weigh up the positives and negatives of each accommodation
option to decide what’s right for you.
