CHECK-IN ACTIVITY 1.1.3

Determine the Independent and dependent variables of the following statements.

1. A shopping mall holds a sale. All merchandises are sold at 35% discount.

Independent variable: Percentage discount

Dependent variable: Number of sold merchandises

The number of sold merchandises depend on the percentage discount. As

the percentage discount increases, the number of sold merchandises will
increase. As the percentage discount decreases, the number of sold
merchandises will decrease as well.

2. Travel distance and the amount of gasoline.

Independent variable: Travel distance

Dependent variable: Amount of gasoline

In travelling using a vehicle, the amount of gasoline needed depends on the

distance of the desired destination. As the travel distance increases, the
amount of gasoline needed will increase. As the travel distance decreases,
the amount of gasoline needed will decrease as well.

3. 13th month pay of a company employee.

Independent variable: Number months of work within year of a company employee

Dependent variable: Amount of the 13th month pay

Since 13th month pay equals to the total salary of a company employee in
all 12 months of work divided by 12. So the more months a company
employee worked for a company, the bigger the total salary, which
eventually lead to bigger 13th month pay because there is a bigger total
salary to be divided by 12. So the more months a company employee
worked for a company a year, the bigger the amount of 13th month pay he’ll
receive. However, the less months he worked for a company a year, the
lesser the amount of his 13th month pay.
4. Volume of water and a container.

Independent variable: Size of container

Dependent variable: Volume of water

The volume of water depends on the size of the container. As the size of
the container increases, the volume of water needed to fill the container will
increase. As the size of the container decreases, the volume of water needed
to fill the container will decrease as well.
