The Transportation Problem:

Wheat is harvested in the Midwest and stored in grain elevators in three different cities, Kansas city,
Omaha and Des Moines. These grain elevators supply flour mills located in three cities, Chicago, St.
Louis and Cincinnati. Grain is shipped to the mills in railroad cars. Each car is capable of holding 1 ton of
wheat. Solve a transportation problem based upon the following data:

Grain Elevator SUPPLY AVAILABLE

1. Kansas city 150
2. Omaha 175
3. Des Moines 275

Each mill has the following demand profile every month:

MILL DEMAND
Chicago 200
St. Louis 100
Cincinnati 300

The transportation cost per ton from each supply node to each demand node is given below:

Chicago St. Louis Cincinnati

Kansas city $6 $8 $10
Omaha 7 11 11
Des Moines 4 5 12

The Assignment Problem:

The Atlantic Coast conference (ACC) has four basketball games on a particular night. The conference
office wants to assign four teams (sets) of officials to the four games in a way that will minimize the total
distance traveled by the officials. The supply is always 1 team of officials and the demand is always for 1
team of officials (i.e., the officials cannot be split up, they travel together). The distance in miles for
each team of officials to each game is shown below.

Raleigh Atlanta Durham Clemson

Officials set A 210 90 180 160
Set B 100 70 130 200
Set C 175 105 140 170
Set D 80 65 105 120

Solve the Assignment problem based upon the data above.
