The analyzed text is taken from the novel «Pride and Prejudice». Jane Austen is an
English writer, publicist of realism in British literature, satirist, she wrote the so-called
morals novels. The author's skill was manifested in the ability to tear off the masks of the
main characters and show their true faces. Moreover, she can do this unobtrusively, with
the inherent subtle irony of emphasizing the main thing in each of the characters.
Jane Austen raised the theme of prejudice in society for a reason, because in her
time there were still class prejudices. She literally takes to destroy them in reality and in
her work.
At the center of the novel is the provincial Bennet family, where five daughters
grew up. In addition, the romantic story between Mr. Darcy and one of the daughters –
Elizabeth Bennet is also an essential part of the story. Questions of marriage, not only the
structure of life, but the responsibility in choosing a companion, which are borne by
parents and young people themselves — is one of the main topics in «Pride and prejudice»
The main concern of parents is the successful marriage of three older daughters.
When a young Charles Bingley and his best friend Mr. Darcy settle on a neighboring
estate, Mrs. Bennet begins to hope for the possibility of marriage to one of his daughters.
The happy end is possible only after overcoming pride and prejudice.
We can see a dialogue between two sisters. They are talking about accepting each of
their own character. We learn from the first lines that there is one person who is interested
in one of the sisters.
The text presents us with a drawing of characters («You never see a fault in
anybody. All the world are good and agreeable in your eyes», «With your good sense, to
be so honestly blind to the follies and nonsense of others! ». Also presents stories,
arguments and dialogues.
The mood of the text is emotional and profound. In some parts, it is amusing; in f
sisters, for example, metaphors like «agreeable in her eyes», «honestly blind» and epithets
like «happy manners», «charming neighbor». In the first sentence of the extract, we can
understand that Elizabeth has close feeling to Jane.
To outline the characters of the heroes, Jane Austen resorts to such a variety as
detalization. We can track this in the dialogues: «I always speak what I think. », « You
never see a fault in anybody» Thanks to the detalization, and we can see the diversity of
the characters of the sisters. We can see that Mr. Bingley made a pleasant impression on
Jane. The author emphasizes this by using asyndeton: «sensible, good-humored, and
lively»
In the second part of the extract, the author describes the character of the sisters of
Mr. Bingley, Mrs. Bingley and Mrs. Hurst through irony. He uses bookish words and
complex sentences. I consider that it is necessary to make the text complex, with the help
of it, author can subtle irony and the text save the ironic mood. There are also periphrases
there: « to consider his house as her home»
In the third part, we can notice the relationships between Mr. Bingley's and Mr.
Darcy, their different characteristics. Mr. Darcy attracted the attention of the entire hall
with his aristocratic appearance. However, later, due to his behavior, Mr. Darcy's
popularity quickly waned. The audience began to say that he was too proud, that he was
screwing his nose in front of everyone and that it was difficult for him to please. And this
is an example: «Bingley was sure of being liked wherever he appeared, Darcy was
continually giving offense. » However, Mr. Bingley turned out to be a young man with
noble and pleasant manners. For him to find a common language with each of the
characters – was the easiest thing, he was an easy-going man. With the comparison of Jane
«like an angel», we can see purity of the character.
What about the sisters? Elizabeth, for example, clings to her manner of
communication. She is prone to introspection, and this highlights her over a crowd of
people, and attracts men. She draws conclusions about herself and about others: « But to
be candid without ostentation or design – to take the good of everybody’s character and
make it still better, and say nothing of the bad – belongs to you alone.» she also regrets
what she has done. Jane appears in the image of a nice and good-natured girl. She makes a
good impression on all the heroes. Mr. Bingley's sisters are very proud. They know how to
communicate with famous people.
The characters in the novel "Pride and Prejudice" are full of moral, social and human
values. Each character is measured by intelligence and sensitivity, which eighteenth-
century people called common sense.
This novel excited the public, because the idea, set forth in it was new to the
conservative reader. As for me, we do not need to judge others by belonging to a certain
class and before evaluating find out a person closer, because he may not be what he was
originally in your eyes. Jane Austen put so much deep meaning into such a small story!
