Guangzhou, November 13, 2010
Xinhua

China’s Wushu star Yuan Xiaochao captured the first gold medal at the Guangzhou Asian Games for the
host country in the men’s Changquan form on Saturday. The defending champion Yuan, 22, impressed
the judges and audiences with acrobatic, swift moves to snatch the gold medal with 9.78 points. Japan’s
Daisuke Ichikizakitook the silver with 9.72 and Iran’s Peyghambari Ehsan claimed the bronze with 9.70
points. “I know my parents must be watching me now through the live broadcast, and I hope they will
be healthy,” said Yuan. More than 150 athletes will compete for 15 gold medals in Wushu, a full contact
sport derived from Chinese martial art. The Chinese, who founded the sport, are seen as favourites in
the 10 events they will participate. The sport comprises Taolu (set routines), and Sanshou boxing (free
sparring). Changquan form, or long fist boxing, featuring imitations of animal moves, is the basic and

Who is the first Indian woman to get Bharat Ratna award?

A.Indira Priyadrshini Gandhi was the first Indian woman to be awarded the Bharat Ratna award

The glorious Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi will soon be conferred with the
‘Bharat Ratna’. The maestro will receive the country’s highest civilian award in recognition of
his contribution to Indian music.

Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi, 86, is one of the most prominent Hindustani vocalist of this age.
Though this respect comes pretty late to the veteran but it is well deserved. A descendant of the
kirana gharana, the legendary singer’s crooning has touched many a chords all these years.

Panditji gave his first live performance at the age of 19 and his debut album, which contained a
few devotional songs in Kannada and Hindi, was released at the youthful age of 20. The guru has
won many accolades for his gifted singing and is the man behind the celebrated ‘Sawai
Gandharva Music Festival’, which is held every year in the memory of his teacher.

The ‘Bharat Ratna’ awardee can be credited with adding his divergent magic to the Indian music
and further enriching it by adapting discreet styles and amalgamating them to produce what is
called ‘music to ears’. Joshi, an exponent of the khayal style, has not limited himself and also
rendered splendid thumris and bhajans as well.

Joshi’s rendition of ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ along with other barons of music like Balamurali
Krishna and Lata Mangheskhar is touted as his most popular piece.

The multi-talented singer has also been a recipient of the esteemed ‘Padma Shri’, ‘Sangeet Natak
Akademi Award’, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards.

With this award, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi becomes the sixth person from the field of art and culture
to get the Bharat Ratna award after Satyajit Ray, M S Subbulakshmi, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Lata
Mangeshkar and Ustad Bismillah Khan were conferred with the same. He is the second vocalist
to get the highest civilian award after Subbulakshmi in 1998.
