CONCEPT OF GOAL SETTING

Pablo Picasso once said, “our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in

which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other

route to success.” Goals are the first step towards planning for the future, and play a fundamental

role in development of skills in various facets of life, from work to relationships and everything

in between. They are the target at which we aim our proverbial arrow. According to Latham &

Locke (2002, p.705) “Goals are the object or aim of an action” For example, to attain a specific

standard of proficiency, usually within a specified time limit. Goal setting is the process by

which we achieve the goals.

Goal setting techniques are used by successful people in all the fields. By setting sharp,

clearly defined goals, you can measure your progress and continuously motivate yourself to

progress toward the vision you have for your ideal work life. You will be able to see forward

movement in what might otherwise feel like a long, pointless grind. Be setting and taking action

toward your goals, you will raise your self-confidence.

The following are some tips for setting effective goals:

 Express your goals positively, rather than framing them in terms of what you don’t

want.

 Be precise in setting dates, times, and amounts so that you know when you have

achieved your goals.

 Set priorities so that you know which of your goals to focus your attention toward and

helps you avoid feeling overwhelmed by having too many goals.

 Write your goals down so that you can visually be reminded of them and so that you can

craft them to be precise and clear.

 Break down your goals into small, achievable task so that you get frequent

opportunities to accomplish them and feel motivated to take on other goals.

 Set realistic goals that you can achieve and that are in your own control.

The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing

precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts.

So how to use goal setting? First consider what you want to achieve, and then commit to it.

Set SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound) goals that motivate

you and write them down to make them feel tangible. Then plan the steps you must take to

realize your goals, and cross off each one as you work through them.

If you are able to successfully set and achieve personal goals for yourself, you will

experience many benefits. Even if you do not reach all your goals, just having them can

enrich your life in a number of ways. First and foremost, goals give you something to aim for

and direct your efforts towards. They help guide you to where you ultimate what to be in life.

Setting lifetime goals is like choosing destination you ultimately want to reach. Therefore,

instead of wondering through life, you are able to determine where you want to go. Your

goals give you clear focus on what you believe to be important in life. Therefore, it is

essential when setting your personal goals, you first think about what is important to you and

what you really want to accomplish in life. If you take the time to truly reflect on your hopes
and dreams, your goals will center on what is important to you. If you do not set well through

out goals, you tend to spend your time doing things that are not important to you.

As I mentioned, goals setting helps you to focus on what is important to you, what you

want to accomplish, and where you want to be in the future. This perspective helps in

decision making. If you know where you want to go, you are in better position to makes

decisions on how you want to proceed if you know what is important to you and what you

ultimately want to accomplish.

Setting goals helps you take control of your future. Without goals, you tend to drift

aimlessly. You do not have a plan for where your life is headed, so you just go with the flow.

However, by setting goals, you have more control over where you are headed and how you

get there.

Goals give you hope and something to aspire to. In itself, having a meaningful goal to

think about and envision reaching can be very motivating. As you start toward your long-

term goal, you are able to accomplish some short -term goals. With those accomplishments,

your long- term goal becomes more realistic. The more short-term goal you are able to

accomplish the more you believe you will reach your ultimate goal.

Goals make your life more challenging, but at the same time, they give you a sense of

personal satisfaction. Setting and reaching your personal goals helps you appreciate your

capabilities, and gives you an idea of your full potential.

The goal setting process helps you identify your purpose in life. By taking the time to

reflect on who you are and on what you want to accomplish throughout your life, you
discover your purpose. If you center your goals on that purpose, your life becomes more

meaningful.
