1st speaker

I as the first speaker from affirmative team really agree with this motion that states
smoking must be banned in public area.

Cigarette is a thing that has a cylinder shape. It makes of paper with measure about
70 up to 100 mm. cigarette consists of leaves of tobacco have been minced. Based
on survey, Indonesia is one of the third biggest countries in the world country that
has amount of smokers. And cigarette is very dangerous for the smokers.

There are some reasons why I agree with this motion,

1. Regarded from the law side.

Ladies and gentlemen, several constitutions in Indonesia have been issued about
this. Based on the constitution no 75 year 2005 district governments DKI Jakarta.
In the constitution explain that for the smokers who smoke in public area will get a
jail punishment for six months or pay fine as big as 50 million. Please you imagine
well, just because of cigarette and smoking and public area you will get a
punishment in jail. I think it is a relevant sanction because if our government does
not apply this law, especially our societies will a thing as like as then including
smoking anywhere, in hospital, supermarket, book store, and so on.

2. Regarded from economic side.

Regarded from economic side, smoking is only wasting money. Too much money
that the smokers have to pay a cigarette for smoking. Whereas smoking actually is
very dangerous for the smoker. And heir money that they use to buy the cigarette is
useless. Just imagine, you buy a cigarette, the cost of a cigarette is Rp 500. So how
about a pack of cigarette? How much you waste your money too but a cigarette in
a week? In a year? Please calculate how much money you need to buy it.

Ok, ladies and gentlemen

Mostly the smoker spend cigarette a pack/day, let’s calculate how much money we
need to bay cigarette in a year. Cigarette cost is 6000/pack. 6000 times 30 days
means 180.000. Then 180.000 times 12 month means that we need 2.160.000.
wow…… it is very fantastic number if just used for buying a cigarette.
Ladies and gentlemen

As we all know, smoker is not only from people who have worked but also student.
Students have recognized what cigarette it is. Even, many students smoking in
public area and wear uniform of their school. This case or this condition is of
course will give a negative effect for them.

The cost of cigarette is expensive enough. If the student who does not have money
to buy the cigarette, he will do anything. For example, the student who likes
smoking and he become addiction with it, whereas he does not has money to buy
it. I think he will deceive his parents to ask money. He will say to his parents that
there is an assignment from his teacher that must spend money, even the most
terrific thing he will steal his parents’ money. Or maybe if the most terrific thing
the student will ask money to the younger class in force.

So ladies and gentlemen

Relating to this, I really agree if smoking must be banned in public area.

I personally disagree with this motion.

As we all know that Indonesia is a rich country with the natural resource and
country that has a tropic. One of the natural resource that is produced is tobacco.
Tobacco is mean material used to make a cigarette.

There are some reasons why I disagree with this motion.

1. Regarded from human right.

If there is a ban of smoking in public area, it will break the human right. Every one
has human right including smoking. You are heavy smoker but you are banned to
smoke in public area whereas you have costumed for smoking anywhere. What
will you do? You will angry and you feel that you r right is disturbed, right?. If you
are a heavy smoker of course you really love it and consider that it is your primary
meal everyday. Can you imagine, you really love cigarette and love smoking but
you must leave your beloved meal. What will you do and what do you feel?

Suppose that, you love a girl or a boy but you are not allowed to persuade her/his
anywhere. What is your feeling? Ladies and gentlemen. Although all people
around you said that your boyfriend/girlfriend is really dangerous for you, you will
do anything for her/him if you really love her/him.

It is the same thing. If you love cigarette and smoking but you are not allowed to
smoke anywhere and many people said that it is vary dangerous for you, you will
ignore any role comment from people around you. And you feel that you have a
right to reach the happiness and enjoyable life.

2. Regarded from environment side.

Smoking is not cause pollution. If there is statement that states smoking can cause
the air pollution, I think it is not true. I do not go along on it. If smoking can cause
air pollution, how about companies and transportation? I think that companies and
transportation more plenty contributes air pollution than smoking. Why our
government does not ban factories and transportation that the reality both of them
more plenty contributes air pollution? Does it a wrong agreement ladies and
gentlemen?

Ok, thank you for the time.

Well, we all recognize that everyone has right to do anything that they want. But in
this case smoking gives no advantage at all for among the active smoker, passive
smoker and people around smoker. When smoker are smoking in public area, of
course it will disturb other people’s right. Especially for people who do not smoke
at all. They will feel uncomfortable when they are in public area.

Ladies and gentlemen

Actually, smokers have many disadvantages. One of the disadvantage of smoking

is smoking can make disease for people around.Smoking is not only harmful for
people who smoke but also for other people.
Cigarette smoke is very danger to the environment and it is an important cause of
disturbing our health, among for active smokers, passive smokers and those of us
who do not smoke. Actually how the cigarette can be dangerous for other people?

Well, I will tell you ladies and gentlemen.

Gaseous components of cigarette smoke are carbon monoxide, ammonia, acids

hidrosianat, nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde. Particles of tar, indole, nicotine,
karbarzol and cresol. As we know that all of these substances are toxic, irritant and
cause cancer (carcinogens). So, when there is someone smoking in public area of
course there will be other people over there. And when the smoker produces the
smoke, the people around him/her will inhale the air which has mixed with the
cigarette smoke unconsciously.

Then, we look some countries that have banned smoking in public are like USA
and England.

England follows in the rule of New York that prohibits its citizens for smoking
public street. A campaign has been launched to ban smoking in all public places in
Stony Stratford near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Fines were imposed to run
this program. Paul Bartlett as a senior counselor at Stony Stratford said that when
you walk in city, and smoke came right in your face, then indirectly, the smoke was
harmful to you and the kids there.

Well ladies and gentlemen,

From my explanation above, we can imitate the same rules to be applied in our
country to the citizen healthy, even though we imitate it from western countries.

Ok, if we look the in indonesia now that most people in indonesia are smoker.
After having interview with some smoker, the result is that smoking can make
themselves to be relax, warm and increase their confidence. And the worse thing is
that smoker can not work anything without smoking. So, what will indonesian be if
smoking is banned and noone is working???

Ladies and gentlemen,

Then, if smoking in public area forced to be banned there will be so many

joblessness in Indonesia. Just imagine that most of people in Indonesia are working
in cigarette factory. Then if Indonesian citizen are banned to smoke, of course all
of the cigarette factory will be closed. And if the cigarette factory is closed,
automatically the jobless in Indonesia will be in great quantities. Not just this the
misery of Indonesian citizen. Not only increasing the number of jobless but the
family of people who work in the cigarette factory also will be more difficult in
fulfilling their daily need. In other side, cigarette instead increase the income,
especially for farmer and seller of clove and tobacco. Cigarette also can be a great
devisen resource for our country. But if the cigarette factory is closed, the seller
and farmer of clove and tobacco will be extending the jobless list in Indonisa and
decrease the devisenresource of our country. Whereas, as we know that looking for
a job Indonesia is not easy.

Well, ladies and gentlemen

A ban is not necessary because actually there are many solutions to avoid the
smoke of cigarette. One of them is by giving ventilation fan which can remove the
smoke. The other solution, people who are not smoking can stay way from the
smoker in order to not inhale the smoke of cigarette.

And actually 99% of smokers wish they hadn't started,so help them, not ostracise
them.

Rebuttal: something that you have to know is the smoke of cigarette can be air
pollution, whereas there were many areas where the air was polluted. Moreover if
the polluted air is mixed with the smoke of cigarette. And I believe that all of you
have known that air pollution can cause the global warming. Indonesia is also a
paradise of smokers who smoke cigarettes which can cause global warming.
Wherever we are certainly there are plenty of people who smoke despite the ban
for no smoking.

Smoking is an activity using cigarette as the media to smoke. And as we know that
it is very dangerous for our healthy because Nicotine is highly addictive. Smoke
containing nicotine is inhaled into the lungs, and the nicotine reaches your brain in
just six seconds.

Nicotine in small doses acts as a stimulant to the brain. In large doses, it's a
depressant, inhibiting the flow of signals between nerve cells. In even larger doses,
it's a lethal poison, affecting the heart, blood vessels, and hormones.

Smoking has many disadvantages not only for the smoker but also for the people
who stay around the smoker. Some disadvantages have talked by the speaker one
and speaker two, but there is other disadvantage of smoking. The cigarette factory
produces waste that also dangerous for other people. Then the smokers are
susceptible, usually they are easy to try in using drug than people who are not
smoking.

Ladies and gentlemen

Everyone in the world has right to breath the fresh air. But if all air is polluted, of
course it will disturb human right. According to the WHO 2000 Fact Sheet N187,
air pollution causes serious health effects mainly respiratory diseases such as
asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and lung
cancer. So from my explanations above I conclude that smoking can kill anyone
who related to it.

Remember, the world would be a better place without cigarettes

Rebuttal: you said that the smoke of cigarette can cause global warming. But I
don’t think so. Because all of us know that air pollution in Indonesia is caused by
there are many vehicles which produce the smoke, in other side, the existence of
many factory in Indonesia also can cause global warming. And the exact cause of
global warming is Pollution that is comes in many shapes and sizes. Burning fossil
fuels is one thing that causes pollution. Fossil fuels are fuels made of organic
matter such as coal, or oil. When fossil fuels are burned they give off a green house
gas called CO2.

Once more, I really disagree if smoking should be banned. I have many reasons for
doing this. The first is

1. Lots of jobs would be lost

Many Indonesian citizens are working in cigarette factory, and then when smoking
is banned of course they will be jobless, and finally the jobless in Indonesia will be
more and more.

2. Sometimes cigarette can give positive effect for certain people. For some people
who has addicted to smoke, cigarette can make them relax, calm and happy.
Without smoking they can not doing anything. And when the smokers are getting
stressed, cigarette also has important role for them because cigarette can be a
medicine to lose their stress

3. Producing cigarette can stop the smokers to kill themselves. Because some
active smokers are addicted person. If the cigarette factory is closed of course all of
shops are not selling cigarette anymore. And in the other side, there is an active
smoker feels stress and very need to smoke. But will happen when the smoker
finds no cigarette more in the shop? It is possible that the smoker will think that
killing themselves is better than feeling stress every day.
