Find: 2-stroke, 4-stroke Internal combustion engine ideal exhaust flow rate
Assumptions: Ignore all heat-related and compressibility effects, engine assumed to be cranked by
external force, assume ideal conditions
Solution:

𝐿 = 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 (𝑚3 )
𝑅 = 𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒 (𝑅𝑃𝑀)
For a 2-stroke engine, the ideal exhaust flow rate is:
𝑄 = 𝐿 ∗ 𝑅/60 (𝑚3 ⁄𝑠)
For a 4-stroke engine, the ideal exhaust flow rate is:
𝑅
𝑄 = 𝐿 ∗ 2 (𝑚3 ⁄𝑠)
60
