Year 5's

UN Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger

LET IT GROW
Producing Healthy Food for a Healthy
Lifestyle

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Unfortunately, over millions of people live an unhealthy
lifestyle which leads them to then experience a lot of
health issues later on in their lives. Therefore, it is our
job as Year 5 students to help promote healthy eating
by creating a vegetable garden on a budget to help
produce vegetables that we can use in a recipe for a
healthy meal.

STEP ONE: INVESTIGATE AND

DEVELOP
First, we need to investigate what seeds grow in the
Australian spring weather and what environmental
factors might affect the growth of the seeds. We
also have to understand the different layers that
soil contains and how they benefit the growth of
seeds.

STEP TWO: RESEARCH AREAS AROUND

THE SCHOOL
We then need to research different sustainable
garden beds and areas around the school we can
place them to ensure they are not affected by the
environmental factors. Our vegetable gardens MUST
be as sustainable as possible.

STEP THREE: CREATE A

VEGTABLE GARDEN ON A
BUDGET
After we have found a sustainable garden bed and an area
around the school we need to start thinking about how to
create our vegetable garden on a budget. You have $50 to
spend on sustainable items for your vegetable garden.
Eventually, you will use those items to create your very
own sustainable vegetable gardens.

STEP FOUR: EVALUATE

After we have produced our own vegetable gardens,
we will have to vote on a set of criteria to mark our
vegetable gardens against. With the help of our Year
4 buddies, we will receive feedback and discuss
changes that might need to be made to our gardens.
