WHAT IS TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT?

In urban planning, a transit-oriented

development (TOD) is a type of urban
development that maximizes the amount of
residential, business and leisure space
within walking distance of public transport.
TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
Creating a mixed-use community around a
transportation source allows for residents and visitors
to be in close walking proximity to a grocery store, a
park, a tailor, retail, work and other services.
It fosters interaction between individuals and creates
a "Sense of Place" especially in a society where
many of us don't know our neighbor.
Compact, walkable, pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use
communities centered around high quality train
systems. This makes it possible to live a lower-stress
life without complete dependence on a car for
mobility and survival.

Transit oriented development is also a major solution

to the serious and growing problems of climate
change and global energy security by creating
dense, walkable communities that greatly reduce the
need for driving and energy consumption.

FACTORS DRIVING THE TREND TOWARD TOD

- Rapidly growing, mind-numbing traffic congestion nation-wide

- Growing distaste for suburbia and fry-pit strip development
- Growing desire for quality urban lifestyle
- Growing desire for more walkable lifestyles away from traffic
- Changes in family structures: more singles, empty-nesters
- Growing national support for Smart Growth
COMPONENTS OF TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
- Walkable design with pedestrian as the highest priority.
- Train station as prominent feature of town center.
- Public square fronting train station.
- A regional node containing a mixture of uses in close proximity. (office,
residential, retail, civic)
- High density, walkable district within 10-minute walk circle surrounding train
station.
- Collector support transit systems including streetcar, light rail, and buses.
COMPONENTS OF TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
- Designed to include the easy use of bicycles and scooters as daily support
transport.
- Large ride-in bicycle parking areas within stations.
- Bike share rental system and bikeway network integrated into stations.
- Reduced and managed parking inside 10-minute walk circle around town
center / train station.
- Specialized retail at stations serving commuters and locals including cafes,
grocery, dry cleaners.
BENEFITS OF TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
- Higher quality of life with better places to live, work, and play.
- Greater mobility with ease of moving around.
- Increased transit ridership.
- Reduced traffic congestion, car accidents and injuries.
- Reduced household spending on transportation, resulting in more
affordable housing.
- Healthier lifestyle with more walking, and less stress.
BENEFITS OF TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
- Higher, more stable property values.
- Increased foot traffic and customers for area businesses.
- Greatly reduced dependence on foreign oil, reduced pollution and
environmental damage.
- Reduced incentive to sprawl, increased incentive for compact
development.
- Less expensive than building roads and sprawl.
- Enhanced ability to maintain economic competitiveness.

WHAT IS BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM?

Bus rapid transit (BRT) is a public transit

mode that involves a combination of operational
improvements, transit priority measures, and
passenger amenities for urban bus service.
BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high-quality bus-based
transit system that delivers fast, comfortable, and cost-
effective services at metro-level capacities. It does this
through the provision of dedicated lanes, with bus ways
and iconic stations typically aligned to the center of the
road, off-board fare collection, and fast and frequent
operations.

Implemented By Mayor Architect Jaime Lerner in

1974 after the World War 2 to give a solution for the
massive traffic in Brazil making a way for the first ever
BRT System (Rede Integrada de Pasaporte) to be built
in Curitiba, Brazil.

BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM

Compared to a regular bus, the journey on a BRT is

much quicker, because BRTs enjoy bus-only lanes, and
passengers pay at the station, rather than on the bus.
And since the station floor is at the same level as the bus
floor, BRT is easily accessible to individuals with limited
mobility.
BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM
Its capacity to catalyze transformative transit-oriented
development (TOD), however, has not been investigated
extensively, especially in comparison to rail-based TOD. This
workshop investigated the potential for synergies in bus rapid
transit oriented development (BRTOD) through the integrated
design of the routes, infrastructure, public spaces, real estate
projects, and related policy packages necessary to induce
desirable physical, social, and environmental outcomes.
BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM

Transit service that reduces travel times generally

increases the value of surrounding land; transit-oriented
development seeks to leverage such value for
revitalizing communities and increasing transit ridership
through compact, mixed-use development and high-
quality walking environments.
Typically, a BRT system includes roadway that is
dedicated to buses, and gives priority to
buses at intersections where buses may interact with
other traffic; alongside design features to
reduce delays caused by passengers boarding or leaving
buses, or purchasing fares. BRT aims to combine the
capacity and speed of a metro with the flexibility, lower
cost and simplicity of a bus system.

The construction of a BRT corridor can be an

opportunity for transit-oriented development
through the capitalization of accessibility benefits.

To take advantage of this opportunity, additional

mutually reinforcing benefits can be encouraged
through integrated design.
