What is your Area of Interest?
My area of interest is that of suicidality. Originally my interest was more broad,
psychology in general, but after doing research on my survey, I realized that I am most
interested in suicidality.
Description of the Area of Interest
Suicidality is the thoughts/actions of being suicidal. I chose this topic because it is
extremely prevalent in society today. More and more people are dying from suicide
every day, and suicide rates are skyrocketing, and surpassing many of the other causes
of death, especially amongst teenagers. This is also a deeply personal topic for me
because I also struggle from mental health conditions, and I am intrigued about the
science and statistics of it. The solution I am proposing is open discussions at least one
a semester for students in school.
Target Audience
The target audience of my area of interest is young adults, so anyone ranging in age
from Middle School to Grad School. I think that those who would benefit most from this
however, are students in High School. I am proposing that students in high school be
introduced to the topic of suicide, although taboo, and have open discussions on mental
health at least once a semesters. I believe this would open up the conversation about
suicide, and hopefully help disperse some of the stigma surrounding mental health.
Projected Outcome and Benefit
Some of the potential outcomes and benefits of having open discussions on the topic of
mental health and suicidality are reduced stigma, reduced rates of suicide, decreased
rates of depression, among many others. Most prevalent, however, is that it creates an
open forum where students feel comfortable talking about what’s going on for them,
both internally and externally. Once completing the project, I hope to have a designated
person, or people, where students can go to if they are in distress, or just need to talk.
My end goal is to ultimately decrease the stigma and raise awareness on the topic of
suicide, as well as reduce suicide rates among school-aged young adults.
