Topic : Teach mental health in school

Introduction/Attention Did you know how important mental health in our life? Have
getter: you even heard that mental health is more important than
physical health?
Yes, it is true that mental health more important than
physical health. This is because
Problem/ Issue : Recently, the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS
2019) revealed that the country was faced with a “hidden
epidemic” with nearly half a million of our Malaysian
children suffering from mental health problems. Nearly one
in 10 children aged between 10 and 15 years old have
mental illness issues. This is worrying because the disease
is expected to be the second biggest health problem
affecting Malaysians after heart disease by 2020. Although
Malaysia has been making efforts towards mental illness
awareness over the years, the subject is still considered
taboo among the children.

Proposal : More efforts should be put into informing the children about
mental health to increase understanding and reduce the
stigma. So, what kind of efforts could be done in order to
raising awareness on mental health among children?
Ladies and gentlemen, we present teach mental health in
schools as the effort that could be done.

Solution : So, how does this effort help children raising awareness on
mental health?

Teach mental health in schools is helping because schools

Justification for solution :
are actually the place where most of young people should
receive mental health care. The only way that we can do is
educate the children, just like physical health is taught.
Bringing mental health into school is step one to increase
awareness among children. Supporting mental health now
will have big payoffs later. If we don’t attend to children’s
mental health problems when they are still young, those
problem are going to follow them as adults. It will make the
situation later on become even worse. The small changes
in behaviour and thinking often occur before major mental
illness will appears.
What will children get from mental health education in
school?

Firstly, the awareness among children will increase. This is

because mental health education will teach how to maintain
positive mental health so that it will eliminate all the
negativity. The children also can understand the concept of
self-care if they having a mental health problem. They need
to know that they are responsible for their own mental
health.
Next, the children can recognize mental health issues in
themselves and others. This can increase understanding of
the importance of mental health. The children will provide

 with right strategies and tools to cope with mental health
problems so that they can manage and control their mental
health by their own. When mental health problems are left
undiagnosed or untreated, it can lead to unhealthy coping
mechanisms and negatively affect a child’s ability to grow
and learn.
Third, mental health education can save their lives. This is
because the issue of suicide and self-harm among children
is quite high. In fact, suicide is the second leading cause of
death for youth aged 15 to 24. If they get more detail
knowledge about their mental illness, it can help them
identify their problems. They will know where to seek help
before it is too late. It can quite literally save their lives.
Conclusion/ Reinforce the I think teach mental health in school is really important to
proposal : raising awareness and give knowledge among children.
Our children now maybe still lack of knowledge so that they
can’t really handle their mental problems and they don’t
know how to get any help. So, by teach mental health in
school, we can reduce the number of children that have
mental illness and attempt suicide.
