The Future of teaching mental health literacy in schools

All kinds of people suffer from all kinds of health risks; specifically mental health

issues have dramatically risen and affects many. Mental health issues are extremely complex

issue because there are so many different theories of why and how people should learn about

mental health. If mental health was something at schools, kids would be more aware about

mental health and wouldn’t struggle with expressing their feelings. Kids spend most of their

early childhood in school, so they should have the knowledge and develop skills about mental

health.

Mental Health is an important factor of any children’s health and life. Mental

disorders can be a significant change to any children’s life; mental disorders change how

children learn, behave, and/or handle their emotions. The most common disorder in children is

ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). Multiple families were asked to take a test

about their children’s mental well being. Statistics show that 1 in 6 children, ages 2-8 years old,

develop and/or have a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder(s). There are multiple

resources to provide information about mental health issues.

Children need to learn and be comfortable with the idea of what mental health issues are

and how it can effect their day to day lives. Without the knowledge of it, they would have a

harder time growing up and coping

What Is Social Learning Theory?

There are many theories about the complex of psychological theories of

explaining how and why people learn. Albert Bandura, who is a psychologist, proposed that a

“social learning theory” which will conduct an observation and/or study to prove this point.

Bandura thinks it has more than how an individual may behave. In Bandura’s theory, it is

believed that there wasn’t a direct answer to know how and why people learn. However, there

are reasons to know about social learning theory: people can learn from simply observing,

staying mentally active is another important to learning and growing, and learning doesn’t have

to lead to behavior change.

Bandura experimented using three basic models: a live model, who will demonstrate

and/or act out a behavior. A symbolic model, who are real or fictional characters displaying

behaviors in books, films, television programs, or online media. A verbal instructional model,

which involves descriptions and explanations of a behavior.

The key factors for success in learning about how we mentally function. The key factors

are attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Each of those factors have its own way of

contributing to how we learn about mental health. There are real world applications that also

effect the understanding of mental health in our day to day lives. For example, social media is

damaging to anybody. People could become more aggressive and

Impact of Mental Health and Stress Leven of Teachers to Learning Resource

Development

There was a study that was taken place in the Philippines in a school about how

impactful mental health and stress is to not only the teachers, staff members, but the students.

This study was spilt up into clusters and the total population in the areas. The people that were
Nguyen 3

part of the respondents were teachers from 25 different elementary schools. The teachers that

were part of this analysis were asked about their mental health in terms of sleep.

Due to COVID-19, the disease has caused a lot of issues. Not only the fact that COVID-

19 is spreading quickly, but it is affecting another thing that is also spreading quickly too. Which

is everyone’s mental and physical health, not being able to be social and have some sort of fun.

When people think of mental health, people think of feeling shame or other negative feelings.

According to Salerno, there has been an increase in the awareness of mental health for

students. The more people are aware of mental health and how impactful it is on any generation.

Another contributing factor to mental health being a big issue is stress. In the Cambridge

Dictionary, it says that stress causes more than just physical pain. Not what one may think when

they say that they are “stressed,” like headaches, minor pains, trouble sleeping, and the list could

go on and on.

To potentially decrease the amount of mental health issues in schools, there should be

ways to cope that will be provided by the school. One of the ways to decrease mental health

issues is the teachers. They are the best at assisting and aiding students to their fullest potentials.

They are the best at managing students, developing resources, create challenges, and many other

skills for students. There should be three categories in terms of organizational centralization of

development: decentralized, centralized, and highly centralized.

Why Mental Health Should Not Be Taught in Schools

Teachers aren’t trained to be a therapist, so they couldn’t help their students.

Their job is to just teach and the observe the students’ behaviors. In addition, the schools

can provide a “feel-good” class environment. Which will then lead to the child develop

resilience, empathy, and problem solving skills. Doctors are in charge of students’ mental

well being. They are more educated and trained to be prepared to assist people with

mental issues. They provide more to information and resources to help people with

mental health issues.
