INTRODUCTION

The percentage of children who experience mental health issues such as

anxiety, behavior disorders and depression have continued to become more prevalent

in the last twenty years. The purpose of this research study is to examine the

prevalence and contributing factors of mental health disorders in school aged children

and the effects it has on their social success and academic achievement and what can

be done to support children to be successful and improve their mental health. Educators

are a key factor in improving a child’s mental health, with much of a child’s time being

spent in school, educators are more aware of mental health disorders will be more

prepared to better support and implement strategies into their schools and classrooms

to support all students. Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people

to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and

contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that

underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships

and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to

personal, community and socio-economic development.

Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. It exists on a complex

continuum, which is experienced differently from one person to the next, with varying

degrees of difficulty and distress and potentially very different social and clinical

outcomes.

Mental health conditions include mental disorders and psychosocial disabilities as well

as other mental states associated with significant distress, impairment in functioning, or

risk of self-harm. People with mental health conditions are more likely to experience
lower levels of mental well-being, but this is not always or necessarily the case. Mental

health problems can affect a student’s energy level, concentration, dependability,

mental ability, and optimism, hindering performance. Research suggests that

depression is associated with lower grade point averages, and that co-occurring

depression and anxiety can increase this association. Depression has also been linked

to dropping out of school. Among Filipino children aged 5 to 15, 10% to 15% are

affected by mental health problems. According to the World Health Organization

(WHO), 16.8% of Filipino students aged 13 to 17 have attempted suicide at least once

within a year before the 2015 Global School-based Student Health survey. This is just

one of the many indicators showing the state of mental health of these children. These

statistics involving children’s mental health are concerning as childhood is a crucial

period where most mental health disorders begin. Efforts should be made to identify

these issues early for proper treatment in prevention of negative health and social

outcomes. Childhood mental and developmental disorders also frequently persist into

adulthood, making it more likely for them to have compromised growth with greater

need for medical and disability services and higher risk of getting involved with law

enforcement agencies. Overall, mental health has a big impact on teenagers it can

affect the student's energy level, concentration, dependability, mental ability, and

academic performance. Poor mental health can also lead to anxiety, depression, or

even committing suicide if not well taken care of. In this research, we will study how

mental health problems affect the academic performance of the Grade 11 students in

Sta. Lucia High School School Year: 2023-2024

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Poor mental health can affect students at all stages of their university experience.

Whether they are facing loneliness, anxiety, or even depression, mental health

difficulties can significantly impact a student’s ability to engage with their studies, make

friends, and make the most of their university experience. These are some significant

ways in which poor mental health can impact the student's experience. Engagement

Students with mental health issues are often less engaged in their studies, according to

institutions. Many colleges now analyze student engagement levels to identify students

who may require assistance. Students experiencing mental health issues may appear

less interested in their course, be unwilling to participate in discussions, and their overall

attendance may suffer. Students suffering from anxiety or depression may find it difficult

to attend lectures or seminars, or to deal with the social interaction that comes with

regular university life. This frequently has a negative impact on academic participation.

Students experiencing mental health issues may abruptly decrease their levels of

participation or appear less proactive. These withdrawal symptoms are typical of a

student who is battling mental health issues. Attainment Achievability is frequently

directly impacted by the effect on engagement and attentiveness with academic

pursuits. Students with mental health issues can witness a drop in their grades or show

that they are unable to handle the demanding requirements of tests and assignments. A

student's performance in a course and how it compares to prior work can frequently tell

lecturers and professors whether they should be concerned about their mental health.
