According to me disadvantage is you constantly need a device such as

computer or laptop which have a bad effect on one's eyes.

According to me disadvantages of using the e textbooks are they have

bad effect on eyes. Using printed books are good for health. Another
disadvantage is if the device which you use for reading gets corrupt you
loose your collection of books.

1. Can lead to weak eye sight

2. Security Risk - might contain computer viruses

It glues us to the very technology that we need to become less addicted to

or be too much dependent on.

c) it's difficult to navigate

a) fatigue level is high

Not able to go to different pages fast

Touch feel of the book
Can’t make notes or underline the important points

Losing out on the touch and smell of books

Becoming too dependent on technology
Losing out of traditions

It has been believed that the prolonged use of electronic devices has
become a matter of concern as it has been adversely affecting the eyes of
the user and also been accounted for higher health concerns.

E-course readings are destructive for eyes. We as of now utilize cell

phones and workstations more often than not, utilizing these will build our
presentation to the screen and will cause medical problems.
1. E-textbooks cause strain in the eyes of the reader.
2. They cold sometimes be pirated and that means loss of royalty/revenue
to writer of the book and publication house.
3. E-textbooks lack the comfort of reading from the book.

1.E-textbooks cannot be accessed if there is no internet connectivity.

2. Continuous use of e-textbooks can cause eye strain.

I am not able to feel the books I am using. Less connection with it. There
is more dependency on the device. If there is any problem with the device
then I may not be able to read any book.

Ebooks causes eye strain, if you keep staring your device for a long you
will come into problem of eye strain. Physical books are good when it
comes to health issue and they don’t effect but Ebooks causes eye
problems a lot.
Uncomfortable to use
E-Books can be hacked.
Require power

E-textbooks are harmful for eyes. We already use mobile phones and
laptops most of the time, using these will increase our exposure to the
screen and will cause health issues.

Too much screen time leads to harmful effects on health especially eyes.

Requires operational and uninterrupted internet network, requires

personal information for login purposes, may require subscription charges,
full length books are not available and causes strain on eyes.

Installation issues, backup problems, strain on eyes, illegal distribution

and network issues.

The disadvantage i feel is that the charm and aura of book reading is lost.
It also has huge health implications.
Does not have the feel of a book. Older generations/Avid Readers likelier
to stick to actual books.
• Prolonged use can cause eye strains
• Difficulty in using the technology

• The main disadvantage is the high cost subscription of these e-textbooks

• A proper equipment is required for accessing these e-textbooks
People generally miss the conventional feeling of studying books.
Notifications of the other apps are very disturbing

Use of other apps while reading

They are a viable source of distraction. It requires a stable wifi connection

and can prove to strain the eyes of an individual.

They are quite a pain as it strains the functioning ability of the person. A
smart device is a necessary to operate the e-textbooks.

1.A device is Needed

2.Eye Straining
3.Difficulty in reading in sunlight
4.Lack of "book feel"

1.can lead to distraction

2.strain on eyes

The old fashioned and aesthetic vibes of books lack in ebook

Can cause eyesight problems

1.Causes greater strain on the eyes because of the device being used
rather than physical books
2.Not suitable for prolonged reading as leads to headache
3.Requires the availability of suitable device at all times

1. Some material are of poor quality that causes eyes to drain faster
2. The device for browsing e-textbooks might not be available at all times
like the battery dies fast or connectivity is lost

1. Strain on eyes
2. Need to charge your device
3. Loss of information
1. Physical indicator of how much book is left to read is missing
2. Have to charge the device or be connected to the internet to read the
book
3. Cannot scribble on the pages for references
4. Cannot donate them to others

Strain on the eyes

Too much screen time

Difficulty in reading it on small screens is one of the disadvantage. Also,

the lack of touch and feel is missing in e-textbooks.

Long exposure to electronic device

I tried it once, and I lost the track of where I had been reading. It does not
give a feeling that you have completed reading a book.

The digital forms of all the books might not be available.

The requirement of specific resources ( Laptop, Phone or Ipad) and the

pressure it puts on eyes

Essence of a textbook is lost and usage of e-textbooks is difficult to

understand.

strains your eye, can divert the attention as the e-books are read on
phone or laptops

more or less effect on eyesight, contributes to e-waste

Need electronic device to access it

Strain on eyes while reading
Size of text

It can cause distraction during studies as devices can be used for other
entertainment purposes.

Limited battery life, have to charge the device after a certain point of time

Originality factor that comes with an actual book

E-textbooks require device which has limitations of battery life and needs
to be charged. Strain on eyes after reading for longer time is another
issue.

The screen time which affects your eyesights, especially younger children.
not having the feeling of a hard cover book

Can be disrupted easily by lack of connection.

Rural areas don't have proper connections.

Requires special device

Not Familiar with technology

- Harmful on the eyes

- Dependence on battery

- Dependence
- Future Generations wont be able to read a normal book with the same
interest

High cost, regular charging of device, eye strain

High price, frequent need of charging of device

1. Easy to get distracted

2. Need a gadget (computer/mobile/tablet) to use it
3. Effects on health (specifically eyes)
4. Piracy problem for author/publisher

1. Health is adversely affected as you have to stare at the screen.

2. Don't get book satisfaction from a e-book i.e physical touch of a book
3. You can lose a file (because of virus/if you forget to backup)
4. Need internet and device to read

Cannot use them without internet connectivity, retention capacity i believe

is more in case of a physical textbook

Harmful for eyes in the long run

Everyone is not aware of etextbook

I am not able to feel the books I am using. Less connection with it. There
is more dependency on the device. If there is any problem with the device
then I may not be able to read any book.

The disadvantages of using e-textbooks are it may cause eye strain and
you can lose your files as it is in digital form.

You need a device to use free textbooks and etextbooks are harder to
read in sunlight because the glare of the sun makes a screen hard to read.

Strain on eyes, if using smart phones or laptops.

There is a different feel of pages, on having read the original textbooks.
They smell different.

Intangibility is one of the major disadvantage of using e-books. E-book

doesn’t give the traditional feeling or touch, a physical book can deliver. E-
books prove to be expensive than physical books in some cases. Also,
there is piracy problem for authors when e-books are available for free
download at different torrent sites.

E-books can cause eye-strain and it can have adverse health effects. If
you’re reading your e-book for a long time, it can cause headaches and
negative effects on eye. People already spend a lot of time on electronic
devices. Reading can be done on physical books to avoid extra time
devoting to electronic devices.

Not easy to carry big , lethargic and heavy books

Eyes pain
Muscles of eyes stretch

Shunning traditional approach completely

Not owning the hard copy

Strain on the eyes after some time. It also leads to loss of feel of using a
hardcopy. Can be tough to operate for non tech savvy audience.

Don't think there is any

1. You need a laptop or personal computer to run e-textbook which can be
unaffordable for some people
2. It has negative effect on eyes

Can be difficult to use if don’t have knowledge about computer

Subscription costs are high for good books, Unable to feel or smell the
book which is a great delight

Costlier than normal books need to have a credit card or paypal account
to buy some books

Eye strain

We have to charge our e-textbooks daily

• High subscription costing for e-books makes it costlier
• Digital Reading material leads to straining on eyes and low vision
• Some E-books might work on only limited capable devices

• Costly to buy books online

• Causes health issues such as eye strain

The e-books are highly dependent to availability of smart device.

Affects eye health

Difficult to change habits of reading from textbook for some people
Reading from books will last longer as you can concentrate more while
reading from book as compare to e textbook
Reading from e textbook is difficult as visual is not that great

It requires special device to read it and can cost much higher. The device
can have negative impacts on health. Loss of complete information in
case of any problem with device. Downloading books using pirated
software applications is illegal also.

First basic disadvantage is that it puts strain on your eyes. Some of the e-
textbooks are available free online but there are certain books which cost
much higher than physical books.

Major disadvantage is that it will have a direct impact on our eyes. Another
can be the data which is present in the book in not the exact data and
being copied from author's book without his permission

Required internet to download. Sometimes very expensive

People who are not technologically advanced might suffer while using e-
books

Difficult to read sometimes, stress on eyes

Headache after constant use and also eyesight problems

Feel of paper is the missing component. Technical issue such as virus can
corrupt the e-library.

The feel of paper and the fragrance of paper.

The disadvantage I feel would be that at times you can't access your
electronic device as it needs to be charged at all times.

Well, they can put a strain on your eyes. The blue light from the screen is
known to affect the retina in human beings. But, I also think that we'll soon
come up with a measure to counter that.
If the device crashes, you will lose all the E-textbooks.

Extreme use of E-textbooks can hinder your eyesight

Lack of feel and touch. The essence of the book is lost. It becomes
complicated to use for not so technology friendly people.
The books relevant in India aren't available in the form of e-textbooks as
much as foreign published books are. The lack of touch.

The disadvantages of e-books according to me is it affects the eyesight

adversely. You cannot read continuously for hours. Moreover if you are
reading it in dim lights it will be even harm your eyes even more. For the
young kids, this has led to the use of spectacles at a very small age.

• Requires a e-book reader or a computer which costs higher

• Side effects on eyes
• E-book reader requires power

Ebooks causes eye strain, if you keep staring your device for a long you
will come into problem of eye strain. Physical books are good when it
comes to health issue and they don’t effect but Ebooks causes eye
problems a lot.
Uncomfortable to use
E-Books can be hacked.
Require power

Lack of security and health problems

You don’t get the real feel of a book

You may run out of battery of the device on which you are accessing the e
book
Its difficult to write some imp points on an e book as compared to a normal
book

Disadvantages of using e textbooks includes copyright issues, health

issues for people using e-textbooks for longer period of time and
increased cost of living including availability of modern gadgets like
laptops, smart phones etc.

It requires a smartphone to use e books. Also it is a strain for the eyes to

continuously use e books.

Disadvantage major is lack of concentration on computer or mobile phone

The most disappointing thing about Ebooks is it requires special device for
keeping it and reading Ebooks. Not like traditional books which are free to
read doesn’t need any device nor you need a special charger to keep the
device running.
Eye Strain

Satisfaction of reading a book not there, causes strain on the eyes

1 Strain on eyes
2 Technical issues
3 Higher cost

Loss of the art of reading and the touch - feel associated with books

E books are not available for all the texts available in this world. Also
reading books through a tablet or a phone could be a straining task. They
are not accessible to all.

It might pressure your eyes sometimes and a human touch with a book is
absent here.

Eye sight problem

I c) Is there anything else you associate with your own views about using e-
textbooks?

According to me e-books are convenient and useful however they would expire
after a certain period of time.

A lot of e textbooks are available for free. Also its easy to find the book when
you want re read and you can choose the font and size of your choice. I wish
that we could lend e textbooks for as long as we want to the other person as in
case of printed books. Generally you can only lend the for limited time. (Sharing
books should be promoted in case of e textbooks as well)

E textbooks have made it more easy to access knowledge and made us more
aware. This has put us in an advantage where there are no boundaries to
knowledge that is easily transferable over the world

I personally prefer traditional books.

Prefer using books more than e books cause we get a feel of reading

Doesn't give feel of a physical handbook

No

No

As shared earlier as well, in my personal experience on using the e-textbooks

has been great as they are very handy to use, accessible to anybody at any
time. From a bigger picture they are better to use as they tend to reduce the
dependence on paper as well. this has helped in saving the environment too.

The touch and feel of physical books can never be supplanted by the e-course
books. The fulfillment got from perusing a book is at an alternate level. You can
check significant words and lines and make the significant pages hound eared.
This can never be felt while utilizing an e-reading material.
I feel that e-textbooks are a great means to share information if it is viewed on a
suitable device like an e-book reader. As, e-book reader can only be used for
reading and it allows the reader not to be disturbed from other applications like
constant messages, other notifications. This way the reading experience can be
enhanced.

In my opinion, use of e-textbooks should be allowed with eye protection mode to

protect our eyes from UV rays from mobile screens or laptops.

The availability of good devices like Kindle, Nook will make the transition easier
from traditional to e-textbooks.

personally prefer traditional books over e- books as they give me the feeling of
reading which i miss in e books
The touch and feel of physical books can never be replaced by the e- textbooks.
The satisfaction derived from reading a book is at a different level. You can
mark important words and lines and make the important pages dog eared. This
can never be felt while using an e-textbook.

No

Search and find functions facilitate efficiency, options for marking the pages are
available and students can take advantage of text-to-speak functions.

One of the biggest advantages of eBooks is the fact that they require no trees to
create them. More flexibility and multimedia content available.

No i would not like to associate anything

It is harder to study on e-books

• I am reluctant sometimes in adopting the e-textbooks

E-textbooks has a promising future as the number of electronic gadgets are

increasing in the market and in this fast world, it provides an easier and
accessible way to gain information.
NO

NA

I have a habit of underlining the important texts which in e-textbooks I find it

tough to manage. Dependance on this leads to headache and decreases
efficiency.

e-textbooks are a future as it is communicated as saving papers thus tree.

However, it consumes a lot of energy and demands virtual storage space.

I feel e-textbooks are the future of books and are in accordance with the
technology trends , but using a book or a e-textbook remains a very personal
choice and solely depends on the preference of the reader.

My views about using e-textbooks are largely based on the perceptions of the
younger generations.

I still prefer ebook because of ease of use

E books help saving paper

Though there are multiple advantages of using e-textbooks, but I personally do

not prefer reading like this because my eyes get strained easily and head starts
aching if I spend too much time on a particular screen. Also I am used to
reading from conventional paper-back versions of books and materials, I prefer
that only for reading and somehow that helps me retain more as compared to
electronic medium.

Even if e-textbooks cost me higher, I would still prefer that because it is more
convienient and wider reach.

I think so e-books take a lot of memory space on a device

No

They are easy to read when travelling

Kindle and other devices which are e-book friendly should be cheap
I think the touch and feel factor of books is one of the greatest motivating factor
of reading a book. E-textbooks have this very important feature missing. The
smell of the new books is one of the motivating factors to open the book and
read it
E-textbook market can revolutionize the reading and learning functions in more
inclusive and Eco-friendly manner

I feel it doesn’t give you a sense of fulfillment.

E-Books are portable. I will always prefer using those.

In my opinion, the usage of e-textbook must be increased in colleges and

schools in order to develop in students the ability to conveniently use them and
for technological advancement.
I think e-textbooks are becoming very popular nowadays due to the online
culture in students and also they are reducing the use of paper and are
environmentally good.

I personally feel that e-books are very handy and portable

travel friendly

I have started using e-books more often as it is easy for me rather than carry
bulky physical book

There must be devices in which only study material can be uploaded.

no

N/A

E-textbooks are a good alternative to traditional textbooks as it is not only

convenient to use, but also saves paper(environment friendly).

Easy to carry. They do not give the feel that actual paper book 📚 give, like
turning pages
easy to source and use with the advent of internet

They are helpful and have huge potential for the future.

No

They can be bought quickly

seems like a new way to engage in studies, must be tried

- I think its a great idea but not for all aspects of studying
- There should be a traditional textbook for certain subjects
- A hybrid of traditional and E-textbook

I still prefer books textbooks over e-textbooks as I feel uncomfortable because

of eye strain caused by constant staring at screens too long
I prefer e-textbooks which are easily accessible on devices easy to carry
specially while travelling

It costs much higher to use a e-textbooks; most e-books cost more than normal
physical books.

Licensing can be a pain as digital files can be controlled unlike a paper book.
Plus e-books have a limited shelf life.

It is convenient and has made our lives easy, however the feel of a
textbook(physical) is different and I personally prefer studying from a physical
book than e textbook

Convenience

Etextbook should be made available free to everyone

The availability of good devices like Kindle, Nook will make the transition easier
from traditional to e-textbooks.

As a user of Kindle, I think that it is a growing trend to use e-textbooks in the

upcoming years.

E-textbooks are more flexible than usual books and can carry a lot of books
while travelling in just a handful device.

It's easy to navigate, having access to a lot info via google as well.
Kindle, is a great source. It feels the same and is handy.

Yes, By using e-textbooks, I think we are contributing to environment in a

positive manner. Thousands of trees are cut for manufacturing paper. If we limit
the use of physical books, there will be less requirement of cutting down of trees
& it will also solve the problem of pollution to some extent.

With the advancement in technology and people looking for convenience in

everything, I think e-books are solving their problem. Being interactive in nature,
and available for them at every moment saves a lot of our time.

Yes ,e Books are compliable and convenient to carry

Yes easily available online

I don't personally prefer it.

I like the accessibility

no

No

E - textbooks can be converted into audio files which can be listened while
doing some other work

It is more eco friendly

E books is a good thing , but we should not forget our old big and small books
too that build our childhood and adolescence

Its good, but we should get all under one roof in minimum subscription like once
i register with macmillan i get all e books at an annualised fee

yes it will save paper

you can esily search for words in textbook

• E-Books have a slight edge over its advantages as compared to its
disadvantages and is now becoming a good source of reading for future
generations but the main problem that hinders its progress is the effects on eye
sight which is acting as a deterrent towards its growth.

• E-books are pretty helpful in case of higher studies where there are lot of
reference material to be accessed for studies

For me , e-books are easy to carry.

Ebooks don't give the feel of a hardcopy

It takes time to shift habit from reading book to e-textbook and also it will affect
business of bookshops

NA

E - textbooks for me are the future of books. As more and more people are
getting updated with technology, it can be inferred that they will be more happy
reading books on the device rather than the physical books.

E - textbooks are very helpful as you can read them anytime and in any posture
you are sitting in.

They are a good alternative of books, easy to carry and use

They are easy to use and navigate through. They are more eco-friendly.

Good cause but not much feasible for some people

Battery issue with phones

Constant wandering of mind due to notification

Environment sustainability is required in this time and age thus using e-book
becomes a social responsibility.

It saves time and space and thus it is the need of the fast-paced generation.

I like being old-school, so I prefer books over e-textbooks. A book in your hand
gives you the feeling of reading a book.

Why not? Everything is getting mechanized these days. Why not reading?
Yes, I believe using E-textbooks promotes the advantages it has for the
environment by reducing the use of paper.

E-textbooks is making everybody incline towards technology and also helping

the environment by cutting down on the use of papers

E-textbooks along with audio textbooks reduces the time of physical delivery of
the book, but they adds to the wider range of option to the reader

Wider option just at the swap of few options on my phone or kindle.

I believe in the present world where everything is getting digitalis-ed, at least

there should be few things which would help us in staying away from gadgets.
Already people are spending a major portion of their time on gadgets and in
such a situation increased use of e-books will worsen the situation.

As e-textbooks can be easily converted to audio files, it helps students to listen

to their lessons when driving or walking to college. They reduce costs in the long
run as Digital textbooks are cheaper compared to traditional textbooks,
sometimes as much as 50 to 70 percent less than first edition print texts.

i personally prefer traditional books over e- books as they give me the feeling of
reading which i miss in e books

Yes. They are quite easy to handle and you can carry thousands of books on
the go.

Sometimes parents might think you are accessing your device for some leisure
purpose instead of reading while you are going through an e textbook

In my view i don’t prefer e textbooks until and unless i don’t have access to
hardcopy of books because for me reading e-textbooks and highlighting the
important points while reading is very important which is easy in a hardcopy of
books.

E books can be seen as the upcoming future as it saves paper and portable
hence saves paper

I think positive is it can be used anywhere as we have phones with us. Negative
is distraction and lack of personal touch.
No matter how much hard work you put in making a new Ebook, there are some
people make your ebooks for free download on some torrent site or any other.
This is very serious issue amongst author and publisher

Unlimited Reads

A current and future trend, made it easier for a lot of people to get access to a
lot of books regardless of their geographical areas

E-textbooks basically can be the reason behind eye problems if the user is a
vivid reader. Also it requires internet connection and the device needs to be
charged for continuos usage. The harmful rays from the device can be avoided
if we use books instead.

I didn't understand the question

Can’t say

Since everything is changing very fast we need to catch up with the pace and e-
textbooks are very helpful in that for us.

Not a good idea to read e books

II a) Are there any individual or groups who would recommend/approve of your use
of e-textboooks? Please give details.

My peers would recommend of the e-books because of the today's generation

comfort with technology and in general all the benefits that e-book have to offer.

1. Online libraries- They have almost every book published in the history and easily

Schools universities as most of the people have laptops or computers and then
they don't have to spend money on books.

My peers, my professors encourage ebooks

I would recommend

Schools are now shifting to e-learning methods whereby they promote e-textbooks
extensively as firstly that is the future of learning and not being limited to just
paperback textbooks printed, but also finding out innovative ways of learning and
discovering new materials that will facilitate better learning and also reduce the
load that they have to carry along with them to school everyday. Also because
students should be taught to use e-textbooks since the very beginning.
Also, MBA students now need more of e-textbooks that include a mix of
presentations, articles, and additional reading that they explore from different
electronic platforms. Hence they also would greatly recommend the use of e-
textbooks.

Being a medical student, I have always had huge books that we had to carry to
college and drag back home which used to be a big task. So this field is the one
that would recommend the use of e-textbooks as the volume of material required
for reference in this field is very vast and physical books might not be the best
option.

Students & Young professionals.

Working professionals and students.

No, I don't think so.

Researchers who generally research in India don't go for buying books from all
over the world but access them over the net.

I think as of now there is no group or individual who approves use of e-books

where as everyone has their own opinion about using e-books and can
recommend others based on that. Also the final decision of using e-books should
depend on the situation where the e-books have to be used. For example, in rural
area schools , where fund is a major issue, e-books can help children in education.
In this scenario use of e-books is always beneficial.

As I am very fond of reading books, my mother herself gifted me a Kindle which is

very handy and now I can read any book at less price and any time

My parents would discourage me to use eBooks because of the constant

touch with the technology and the negative effect it can have on eyes.

My grandparents would discourage the use of e-textbooks as they are

worried of my eye power. Also old people take time to accept new ways of

as mentioned, the rigorous and extensive exposure to the use of

electronics as in like laptops or phones has been found and proved to be
having negative effects on the visual and health aspects on people.

Indeed, my folks and grandparents. They think the more prominent

utilization of cell phones and tablets would influence my eyes.
1. Publications- Some traditional publications might be against the use of
e-textbooks as this wold lead to reduction in the copies sold leading to loss
of revenue.

No one

The generation that were born before the tech boom.

Could be my parents

My mother. She isn't comfortable with too much screen time. Also, she is a
traditional copy- pen person

Grandparents and peers (having bitter ebook experience).

Traditional readers who still think that reading also includes the physical

• No

Doctor’s and sometimes parents refrain us from using e-textbooks

NO

Parents generally think that we were using cellphones even though we are
reading and always tells us to read by books

Parents have never experienced working through e-textbooks. Thus, they

prefer to see me learning through physical books.

The people from early generation may not find it a viable option for
education as they have themselves never experienced and in today's
generation gadgets have become a dis-connector from the society.

The older generation might disapprove the use of e - textbooks citing the
disadvantages attached with it , also they prefer the feel the book and are
able to connect with the content in a better manner.

Parents with conservative ideology who don't approve of e textbook as

they believe that it can lead to distraction.

I dont think so

People with eye sight problems

The groups that cannot afford the use of electronic devices for themselves
are the ones that are likely to discourage the use of these. Also, the people
who are not conversant with technology and require help of other people to
operate a device are likely to discourage the use of e-textbooks.

Graduate students who do have such huge sets of material for reference
would not require much use of e-textbooks.
Also, school students are discouraged the use of e-textbooks as it causes
great strain on their eyes and is not suitable for their health

Publishers
I think so publication houses would discourage

Professors in undergraduate colleges, Parents

Middle aged people

Older generation and parents would disprove of my use of e-textbook

because they might think I am using the electronic gadget for leisure
activities rather than learning

Doctors, parents (often confuse with just wasting time over internet)

People born in the 90s and before would mostly not take up E-Books.

People who are used to reading from paper books, especially those born in
90s.

My parents would most probably disprove of e-textbooks because of the

pressure it puts on eyes.

My brother because I usually read them on iPad and sometimes he needs

it for his work.

yes, particularly my parents and their cousins, the reason being it strains
the eye a lot and is a form of distraction. it also, according to them, doesn't
give the feeling of novelty while reading an e-book
bibliophiles: might not give a sense of ownership and feel that purchasing a
book gives

The age group of 40-65 feel uncomfortable reading e-books and rather
prefer a physical book. Plus they feel it will negatively impact their health.

The older generation i.e aged more than 40-45 years feel that the use of e-
books would impact the health negatively and also, deteriorate the
concentration as the person using it might change the application and do
something else on the device.

Those who do not have internet or a mobile phone or laptop or find using

Senior citizens. According to them, you better focus on normal textbooks.

Older generation who are habitual of using physical books, who don’t get
the proper touch feel or satisfaction from using e-books, can disapprove
the usage of e-books.

Some parents might disapprove usage of e-books for their children since it

Not majorly because I don't use them often

It could be my parents who don't want me to hurt my eyesight

None that I know of.

None.

No I don't feel any individual or groups will discourage me in any way.

Yes, every subject or an idea has it pros and cons. There are people who
support it, then there are those who oppose it. Some people like to be old
school in a way that they need to feel the touch of a book, the whiff of the
pages when they read. Can't appose that either. Everyone is entitled to
their opinion.
People who do not have a strong hand in using technology.

Aged professionals who do not promote the use of technology.

Generally, teachers at schools still prefer using this over e-textbooks. This
is because the text can easily be marked it highlighted in case if revisit in
future.
For the people whom the publication counts when only it is a print journal
and not an online journal.

As per me the people of the age group of our grandparents and those born
before 80’s never favor e-books. Few of them are not even comfortable
with the gadgets and modern technologies. So in such situation it’s natural
that they will be against the use of e-books.

Yes, some people or some groups tend to be inclined towards the use of
physical books and discourage e-books. As they think that physical books
can be more meaningful gifts, physical books can be shared while e-books
are selfishly hoarded by the owner of e-book account i.e. Kindle etc

authors(friends) who have had the taste of how it feels to be a part of
bestseller novel or book are the relevant groups that disapprove of my use

about using e-textbooks? Please give details.

While eBooks are more convenient but still many people prefer traditional
books over eBooks .eBooks expedite the process of learning just by sitting
home but reading from back-lit screens is more harmful for eyes and that is
why it may feel more tiresome to finish an eBook than a hard copy book.

yes i would associate with my grand parents and i agree with them that
though we have a lot screen display modes which help to reduce pressure
on eyes but yes printed books would always be better than e books in this
respect

with using the same. As change is something most people are afraid of, a
complete transition for the books is practically not possible and people
need time to adjust to the new age techniques and technologies.

Yes, some people say that e-textbooks are not useful and convenient but
as per today's scenario using we should use digital technology to read that
books as e-textbooks are environment friendly and we can save many
trees by reducing the use of paper.

This shouldn't be given to children. Let me begin learning the traditional

way.

Many prefer it because it cheaper in a long run

It is easily portable everywhere
It is quite trending, some people are comfortable using it and are switching
to e-textbooks easily from physical books whereas some are not so
comfortable and rigid in using them. In fact, they discourage there usage as
it increases the screen exposure of individuals.

No.

Ebooks fit the screen size and come in variations, font sizes and screen
brightness can be adjusted and additional learning aids can be accessed.

Many people still prefer traditional books to read from. Piracy remains a
concern for authors and distributors. Some people think ebooks have
unreliable life span.
That its a new technological phenomena which will have a good impact on
the environment.

devices in which they are accessed have various additional features.

N/A
may be because of our generation who had used books for studying in the
childhood, we were finding it difficult to read e-textbooks for longer reads

NA

There are both positives and negatives associated with using the e-
textbooks. It depends on the comfort of an individual. A good experience
translates into positive reinforcement and vice-versa.

There is a concern of copyright that is raised. Plagiarism is in abundance

and laws to protect rights of makers/writers are yet not stringent.

People feel that e-textbooks are easy to carry and are adjustable to which I
associate the most.

NO

I support their idea of encouraging ebooks

None

Although, e-textbooks are the future of learning as all advanced courses

now has learning materials that is available online, there is still great
audience that is untapped from this technology and can be taught well on
the advantages and converted into e-textbook users.

E-textbooks are being used really extensively now and even people of
older age groups are now shifting towards the use of e-books.

Even though people are technology driven but they still do not prefer or are
comfortable to use e-textbooks
No

Kindles are mostly associated with e books, since their reading experience
is like a physical book
Reading experience can not be compared to hardcopy

The modern generation tend to understand the benefits of e-textbooks

while the older generation is apprehensive of using the e-textbooks

Currently its just a habit and a long way from becoming habit

Most people feel a digital book is portable and cheap. However, I feel we
should go along with the paper books since it is easier to mark on it if it is a
course book and note down the important points.
People strongly believe this shall save the trees and protect the
environment, which I agree to.

Curriculum books have started to come in e-textbooks now and schools,

colleges are encouraging students to read them instead of offline
textbooks. So more people are now supportive of e-textbooks.

People have started to use e-textbooks nowadays and it is coming up like a

As times are changing and we are moving towards digitization, e-textbooks

are the future but needs improvement to cater every individual
I am constant user of e-textbooks as I like reading a lot and e-textbooks are
very easy to read according to me through devices like kindle

Loss of information all at a sudden; Any device with malware/ antivirus can
directly affect the digital data that is stored and then you might lose your e-
book.

E-books can be interactive and contain audio, video and animations which
can enhance the message the author is trying to convey.

search for complex words.

Effect on health as it affects eyesight.

People generally don't like using e-textbooks as they feel better reading the
normal pages of books.
Handy it is.

Yes, as far as the health effects are considered for using e-books, I believe
physical books can also cause similar problems if not kept at certain
distance or being read in low-light. E-books are only solving many pain
points and providing convenience at door-step.

The piracy problem exists for both physical and e-books. If there are e-
books available for free download at torrent sites, there are also fake
copies of physical books available at different local Photostat shops.

Yes ,many people find it easy and convenient way of reading

Yes ,they believe it's handy and easily carriable

Maybe their lack of traditional method and lack of feeling of owning a book

Most of the people are of the thinking that e - textbooks are not good
because they put a lot of strain on your eyes. In today's scenario, most of
the people use mobile in excess and by reading these e - textbooks we will
be increasing that only which is not good for our health.
Although the trend of using these e - textbooks is increasing but most of
the people still believe that they are not good for our health. They say that
you cant make a connection with these e - textbooks that can be created
through physical books.
Some people prefer hardcopy which makes them feel good.

People not knowing much about e-books very new concept for them.

Difficult to read but easy to carry

No

It is individualistic in nature. It depends on an individual if he/she wants to

use it or not.

It is easy to use and user friendly. It saves lot of time and easily available.

wherever you go with ease.

Yes. There are many things but one of them is the convenience that it
provides, like for example with the help of etextbooks we can also read in
the dark and adjust the brightness of the screen as we read.
The ease of use and also you can circulate multiple copies without the use
of paper.

E-textbooks makes it easy for you to share your content and carry it
anywhere at anytime.

There are people who would love go feel the book before they buy it, or
maybe hold it in theie hand. It's not possible in e-books.

No

As per the current trend and views of people on the e-books, I think the use
of e- books is definitely going to increase in the future. The government
also is moving towards digitization. Thus it’s increased use is evident.

There are different views both in favor and oppose of e-books some think
e-books are more sustainable way of reading while others argue that it has
killed the classical way of reading.

Many prefer it because it cheaper in a long run

It is easily portable everywhere

Yes. People find it quite helpful especially when travelling.

Some people have views that you might invest time in an e-textbook
however the real approach to reading or learning is accessing a normal
textbook wherein you can read and write some important points there and
then.

In my observation many parents don’t find using e-textbooks worthy

because they feel their child might get distracted by other things while
studying.

E books have both positives and negatives. It all depends on comfort level
of user as some people want physical books rather then e book.

I find it difficult to underline important words and make notes side by side
as it is important and this feature is not available in all the apps.
Ebooks causes eye strain, if you keep staring your device for a long you
will come into problem of eye strain. Physical books are good when it
comes to health issue and they don’t effect but Ebooks causes eye
problems a lot.
Is learning outcome same or not

I think a lot of people would agree with my point of view regarding the
usage of e-textbooks

1 Traditional way of reading from the hardcopy is still what most of the
people prefer.
2 Also one needs to carry a separate device like kindle for reading.

I feel that excessive exposure to screen can be harmful, simultaneously

books give a sense of joy

eBook hardware and platform should be easy to use

Smart Phones
Adjustable font size
Ease of use
Large volume of information in confined way

When research purpose, we require many books to refer at one

time. Its easy to carry it anywhere in device.

I will use e - textbooks when they are available free on the internet.
Also whenever I am traveling and don't want to carry any book with
me.

Me being outside and now in an emergency to study will create a

circumstance for me to study from e - textbook only. Also if the e -
textbook is easily available on the web.

Non availability of common book, free e-books available

If I am traveling and want to read some book. If ordinary books are
not available.

use e-textbooks more easily.
Wider availability of books online. Comparability of the versions of
book all across my device.

As I mentioned earlier, since we are now more considerate towards

sustainable options for everything, the use of e-books on increased
level would definitely help in achieving the sustainability.

Factors that would enable me to use e-textbooks will be:

• More effective way of striking of and marking
• Effective way to read

available as an e-textbook
Option of carrying either a textbook or an e-textbook will facilitate
usage of e-textbook
Heavy textbooks will to lead to more usage of e-textbooks

Factors that influence me to read e-textbooks include easy

availability, value for money and recommendations from others.

Compulsory e books in college would encourage me to get used to

it and use regularly provided there is no distraction.

All the apps providing features like marking keywords and making
notes on side.
If ebook readers are cheaper

if I am on the move constantly

All our reading material are circulated online, we need to refer from
a lot of different books that might not be physically available, it is

Active internet connection, credible websites to download ebooks

at reasonable rates/free and availability of portable device other
than mobile phone

Travelling is one of the reasons along with availability of books

anytime becomes easier

when I have to carry many books at once so i would rather use e-

textbook so it'll be easier for me.

Travelling
III b) What factors or circumstances would make it difficult or
impossible for you to use e-textbooks?

Lack of proper support such as computer/laptop, internet

connection and battery would make it impossible to use e-
textbooks

When you don't have the device like computer, tablet etc on
which you can read.

1. When a person does not carry any electronic device - then e

textbooks become impossible to access.
2. Marking and remembering things become difficult.

I personally do not like using technology all the time.

a) when note making or underlining is required

b ) when serious study is required

a) when you don't have optimum battery or accessibility to your

device

If I have to study for a longer duration.

Not allowed to use portable devices in the premises.

deteriorating eye sight and health are some of the prominent

factors

An excess of time on the screen is harming my eyes and

loosing center in view of the cerebral pain brought about by
continually featuring at the screen.
1. No access to electronic reading device.
2. No access to internet facilities.

1. Unavailability of mobiles or laptops.

2. Poor network connectivity

Any glitch in softwares in the reader, limited battery life.

lack of internet services

whenever i have pain in my eyes or headache, the strain of the
light will definitely increase the pain

In case you are having some eye related health issue or are
uncomfortable in operating and reading on a digital device.

Never encountered any such problem personally but possibly

in case of some health issue which discourages use of digital
devices.

Inhibited distribution, expenses, network issues, poor internet

accessibility, outdated versions and lack of understanding of
ebooks portals or focus.

Low network connectivity, lack of smart devices, sensitive

vision, health issues, inconvenient lighting.

The factor that keeps me against e-books are the lost feel of
book reading
When there is a text intensive book which makes reading
harder

• Technologically Uncapable

• Health factors such as straining on the eyes, etc.

• Unavailability of electronic gadgets.
Excessive use of screens gives me headache

Screen size of mobiles is tough to read but easy to read by

laptops

Straining and reduction of efficiency will increase my

probability of not using e-textbooks.

It's capability of reducing my efficiency is prime in discouraging

me from using it. In addition, making notes or additions on it is
also tedious.

1.Unavailability of the device

2.If the book is not yet available on the device
3.If the device is not charged and there is no electricity

If I prefer the feel of the book i would use books in place of e -

textbooks , also if I do not have the accessibility to electricity i
would not use e-textbooks.

If I run out of battery of my device

Small size words

Effects of e-textbooks on health meaning the strain that

prolonged reading causes on the eyes makes it extremely
difficult to use. And, availability of internet at all locations
creates a problem sometimes when the book is required to be
procured using internet.

The problems like accessibility of the devices and the quality of

online material are the two things that might make it difficult to
read online.

No net access
1. No net connection
2. No net taking software/device

Less lighting

During night time

When I don’t have an availability of good electronic device, it

would be impossible for me to use e-textbooks

Unavailability of electronic device, size of the screen and

battery life of the electronic device

E-Readers need a power source, in its absence, a paper book

becomes indispensable.

I shall not be using this only in case the digital print is not
available, or the school does not permit it.

The Social stigma attached to using only Offline textbooks.

Comfortability one has with offline books restricts in the usage

of e-textbooks.

if I have an eye problem or do not wish to strain my eyes a lot,

When we have technical limitations

Any glitch in softwares in the reader, limited battery life.

when it is eye straining

It's charging time as it is limited.

When I don't have access to Internet or when I am in a place

like that (like mountains).
I can't recall any. Always available.

E-books require devices, and devices need charging. Where

there is less scope for charging and having device ready for e-
book reading, it can make difficult to use e-textbooks.

If I don’t want more interaction with computer or any other

device, or I’ve already spent a lot of time on electronic devices
at office, at that situation, it will make difficult for me to use e-

Many texfbooks are not available online

When it is discharged
• Prolonged usage of devices on which e-books have to be
accessed and leads to over straining on eyes

• High Costing of purchasing e-books can act as a primary

deterrent in usage of books

If there is a potential virus within the e-book

If ebooks are expensive

Distraction that comes when you use device to read textbook

and same time any notification comes on device

Specially at night time, device brightness affects eyes

The pricing of the book if higher, will make it less appealing to

me. Also if i feel strain in my eyes this will also make it difficult
for me to use e - textbooks.

If the e - textbook is not freely available then it will be difficult

for me to use these books. Also the health issue is there. If i
have weak eyes then i will not use e - textbooks.

If e-book is too expensive or hard to serach on internet.

If I can't find my desired book on internet or it is too expensive
or have limited time subscription.

Battery, size, electronic gadget, small font

When I am having severe head ache or feeling a heaviness in

Or also when I can't get the ebooks
Unavailability of internet in case if I want to read a new book
which is not stored in my library.

Lack of infrastructure would make it difficult.

Looking at a screen for long hours

To be honest I haven't had any such occasion yet. I am avid

user of ebooks, emagazines and etexbooks.
Areas where we don’t have internet connections.

No internet connection

Complex navigation through the book. Difficulty in scrolling

through the sides. Inabaility to mark/highlight the points easily.

Different versions, difficulty in navigation across books.

The only barrier I feel in the use of e-books I feel can be the
absence of devices to read e-books or lack of money. In India
specially where there is a large gap between the income
ranges, the people who are not even able to earn their
livelihood would definitely be against the use of e-books. For
them this is a waste. In future when the gap narrows, it’s
possible that the use of e-books would also increase more. But
for that it’s surely going to take at least a decade I believe.

Circumstances that would make it difficult or impossible for me

to use e- textbooks are:
• Glazed screen of the device I’m using for reading
• Difficulty to switch from one page to another

lack of internet services

whenever i have pain in my eyes or headache, the strain of the
light will definitely increase the pain

When you are suffering from health issues

Mandatory use of normal textbooks by the institution

Unavailability of electronic gadgets

Factors that make it difficult for me to read e-textbooks include

poor internet connection and unavailability of modern gadgets
at all point of time.

Strain on eyes and reduced efficiency because of distraction

from other apps and calls.

Strain on my eyes due to long time use as well as distractions

If ebooks become expensive

If ebooks are expensive

When I have to do an in-depth study that requires me to study

for a book for a long period of time then I would want to read

III c) Are there any other issues that come to mind when you think about the use of e-textbooks?
