Bag Technique

A tool which the nurse, during the home visit, can perform a
nursing procedure with ease and depth, saving time and
effort, with the end view of rendering effective nursing care.

Public Health Bag


is an essential and indispensable equipment of the public
health nurse which he/she has to carry along
when he/she goes out home visiting. It contains basic
medications and articles which are necessary for
giving care.
Purposes

To minimize and To work efficiently and rapidly


prevent the spread of during the care so that work
infection. with the family may be
effective, thus saving time and
effort.

clients and /or members of the
family during home visit.
Principles of Bag Technique

1. The use of bag should minimize, if not totally prevent the


spread of infection from certain individuals to families.
2. The bag should contain all necessary articles, supplies
and equipments that maybe used to meet the needs of
client and family.
3. The bag and its contents should be cleansed as often as
possible, supplies placed and ready for use anytime.
4. The bag & its contents should be well protected from
contact with any articles in the home of the client.
Consideration in the Bag Technique:
1. The arrangement of the content of the bag should be one
most convenient to the nurse to facilitate efficiency and
avoid confusion.
2. Bag technique should not overshadow concern for the
client but rather should show the effectiveness of the total
care given to an individual or family.
3. The bag technique can be performed in a variety of ways,
depending upon agency policies and actual home
situation.
4. Hand washing as frequently as the situation calls for helps
in minimizing or avoiding contamination of the bag and its
content.
5. The bag, when used for a communicable case., should be
thoroughly cleansed and Disinfected before keeping and
reusing.
Contents of the Bag:

• Paper Lining
• Extra paper bag for waste materials
• Plastic linen/lining
• Apron
• Hand towel in plastic bag
• Soap and soap dish
• Thermometers (one oral and rectal)
• 2 pairs of scissors (1 surgical and 1 bandage)
• 2 pairs of forceps (curved and straight)
• Syringes ( 5 ml and 2 ml)
• Hypodermic needles (g. 19, 22, 23, 25)
• Sterile dressings (OS, C.B)
• Sterile Cord Tie
Contents of the Bag:

• Adhesive Plaster
• Dressing [OS, cotton ball]
• Alcohol lamp
• Tape Measure
• Baby’s scale
• 1 pair of rubber gloves
• 2 test tubes
• Test tube holder
• Medicines
• Betadine
• 70% alcohol
• Ophthalmic ointment (antibiotic)
• Zephiran Solution
Contents of the Bag:

• Hydrogen Peroxide
• Spirit of Ammonia
• Acetic Acid
• Benedict’s solution

Note: Blood Pressure Apparatus and


Stethoscope are carried separately.
Procedure

Actions Rationale
1. Remove the paper lining from the bag.

2. Spread the paper lining with clean side out To protect the bag from contamination.

4. Open the bag and take out the plastic lining.

10. Open the bag and remove articles needed for care To give comfort and security and hasten recovery.

Procedure
12. Close the bag then complete care. to prevent contamination

15. Perform handwashing

16. After handwashing, open the bag and return all articles used

17. Return the soap and soap dish inside the bag last with the hand towel

18. Take off and fold the apron using proper technique and return to bag. infection

19. Fold the plastic lining (clean-side-out) and return to the bag.
20.Close and lock the bag.
21.Get the bag, fold the paper lining without touching the contaminated
side and discard.
After Care

1. Before keeping all articles in the bag, cleanse with alcohol.


2. Get the bag from the table, fold the paper lining (and insert), and
place in between the flaps and cover the bag.

Evaluation and Documentation


1. Record all relevant findings about the client and members of
the family.
2. Take note of environmental factors which affect the
clients/family health.
3. Include quality of nurse-patient relationship.
4. Assess effectiveness of nursing care provided.
