1.What happens when the computer is turned on?

The computer gets power from the power suply inside the computer. from there the
computer's bios kicks on and starts the CMOS program that is programmed into the BIOS
chip. the CMOS program then begins to quickly check all the hardware. first it checks what
kind of processor is in the computer, then counts the memory. It then checks the drives such
as cd rom and hard drives then floppy. then it checks all the pci, isa, etc. cards and any other
devices in the computer and gives each an irq (interrupt request). then the Bios (on most
computers) checks first to see if theres a floppy in the drive and if so is it bootable and if so
boots from the floppy. If the floppy is not bootable it then looks on the first hard drive's MBR
(Master Boot Record) to see if its bootable and if so then boots to that drive.. if that one is not
then keeps checking until it either finds a bootable hard drive or tells the user no drives are
bootable and usually asks to insert a bootable floppy or restart the computer

2.What does the suspend mode actually do ?

Suspend mode powers down devices that are not needed in
order to safe electricity,
e.g. it may switch the monitor, sound card or modem off
and turn them back on when
you return from suspend mode.

3.How do you reset the BIOS?

4.Why does a laptop freeze when connecting an external USB or firewire drive?

This does happen on desktops as well. Before ruling out a defective hard drive, you can try
the following. Go to device manager and delete all USB entries under USB, reboot and let Windows
redetect and configure. Also, if you have tons of USB connected devices remove them all, and try the
USB drive to see if it accepts it without a problem.
A quick way to verify if the external drive is working is to connect it to another computer. If its
working sweet, you know it's functioning and the problem resides on your laptop.
Might want to double check bios to make sure USB 2.0 is enabled, to give more power to the ports.

If all else fails, make sure windows is up to date, go to windowsupdate.com, you have latest drivers
for chipset/motherboard/etc. You can also try a repair install, google for information on DIY repair
install.

5.What is the difference between firmware and drivers?

Firmware is software that is burned onto a ROM, PROM, EPROM or EEPROM integrated circuit. (Electrically
Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (and all of the truncations)
This firmware would be in the DVD-ROM drive and it controls the operation of the drive under direction of
control signals received from the computer.

A driver is software on the computer that interfaces the computer to the DVD-ROM drive

6. What does it mean by power cycle of a device?

Power cycling an electronic device is a technical way of saying "resetting" it. When you power cycle a device,
you turn it off and then turn it back on again. Pretty high-tech, huh? Usually, you should let the device sit for
a couple seconds after turning it off to make sure the memory in the device is fully cleared before turning it
back on.

Any electronic device can be power cycled, but the term is frequently used with cable modems, DSL
modems, and routers. This is because small internal errors in these devices can prevent them from
functioning correctly. Resetting them typically fixes the errors and allows them to work correctly again.
