Surds 3: Rationalising the denominator

Rationalising the denominator, means "getting rid" of the surd, and making the denominator a whole
number-

We know that when we multiply a surd by itself, we get a whole number... Voila!

Steps: Either:

1. Multiply both top and bottom by a root:

2. Multiply both top and bottom by the conjugate ( I.e conjugate of 1+3 is  1-3)

1)  3 + 2√2
2)  (9-5√3) / 2
3)  (5√5 – 3) / 4
4) 3√6+2)
