MODULE 9. ASSESSMENT

1. A survey conducted in Mega Manila with a sample of 350 gasoline stations found that the price
charged per liter of gasoline is normally distributed with a mean of P49.50 and a standard deviation of
P2.75. Using the empirical rule, determine the number of stations that charge between P46.75 and
P52.25.

Solution:

Using the empirical rule - we can say that in a normal distribution about 68% of data will be within one
standard deviation of the mean.

σ =49.50−46.75=2.75
σ =52.25−49.5 0=2.75
350 ( 0.68 )=238 stations
Answer: 238 stations that charge between P46.75 and P52.25.

2. The mean grade in a Physics examination was 73 and the standard deviation was 8. Determine the
following: a. The standard scores (z-value) corresponding to a grade of 86. b. The grade of the student
whose standard score is –0.8.

Solution:

x−mean 86−73
a. z= = =1.625
standard deviation 8
b. z=−0.8
x−73
−0.8=
8
x=7 9
Answers: z=1.625; x=79

3. Find the mean and the standard deviation of the heights of male engineering students in which the
heights 66 inches and 75 inches correspond to standard scores of –0.6 and 1.1, respectively. Hint: Using
two values of z, obtain two equations in terms of mean and standard deviation.

Solution:

x 1=66 ; x 2=75 ; Z 1=−0.6 ; Z 2=1.1

x −μ
Z=
σ
66−μ
∴−0.6= →−0.6 σ=66−μ
σ
75−μ
∴ 1.1= → 1.1 σ=75−μ
σ
Solving the two equations simultaneously, we get σ =5.294 , μ=69.1764 .

Answers: σ =5.294 , μ=69.1764 .

4. A traffic study of 1,600 vehicles that passed by a checkpoint showed that their speeds were normally
distributed with a mean of 97.6 kph and a standard deviation of 10.4 kph. How many vehicles had a
speed of more than 100 kph?

Solution:

μ=97.6 ; σ=10.4
100−97.6
(
P ( x>100 )=P Z>
10.4 )
=P ( Z >0.23 )=0.5−P ( 0< Z< 0.23 )=0.5−0.0910=0.409

number of bulbs=1600 ×0.409=654.4 ≈ 655 vehicles

Answers: 655 vehicles
