1. Who are two adversaries in the story?
Aling Biang and Aling Sebia

2. Who of the two is a childless widow?


Aling Sebia.

3. Who of the two has a philandering husband and a tubercular son? What the name of
her son?
Aling Biang. Iking was her son.

4. Who began building the fence? Why did she need a fence?
Aling Biang built a fence because of great anger to her husband and to its other woman,
Aling Sebia.

5. Who helped complete the fence? What did she need it for?
Aling Sebia helped her to complete the other half of the fence and she needs bamboo
clumps.

1. Why did the husband leave the house, and when did he do it?
He left the house to escape the shame from the two women. He left as soon as Aling
Biang found out what he have done.

2. Why did Aling Biang come to the succor of Sebia, her bitter enemy?
Because she needs someone to call for a midwife because she's about to give birth.

3. Who do you think sired Sebia’s daughter, she being a widow?


I think the father of Aling Sebia's daughter is the husband of Aling Biang.

4. Why was Iking prohibited from playing outside the house?


Because Iking has a weak condition and Aling Biang avoids him to see the people living
beside them, over the fence, which are their rival, Aling Sebia.

5. Did the fence between the two houses prevent Iking’s intoxication with the girl in the
other house beyond the fence blossom into love?
No, the fence doesn’t stop Iking wanting to see the girl.

The narrator used Third person’s point of view.

2. What does the fence symbolizes?


It symbolizes the barricade between their friendship. This barricade aroused because of
love affair.

3. What does bamboo represents?


From the story of “The Fence”, bamboo represents the burning rage from Aling Biang’s
heart.

4. What is the theme of the story?


Hatred. It depicts how hatred can destroy a strong bond within relationship that was
once great and strong.

5. What is the moral lesson of the story?


The importance of forgetting the past and forgiving others. Forgiveness is a way to the
reconciliation of differences. On the other hand, hatred keeps the fire of revenge and
angriness live. Our decisions and actions have profound and long-lasting impacts and it
is not good to carry ill will when those consequences and impacts are disastrous.
Committing mistakes is an integral part of Human’s life and to forgive these mistakes
and errors makes a person a good human and also gives one opportunity to repent his
mistake. If we learn to forgive one another it will make our relations strong and also build
trust.
