Read the short story “The Fence” by Jose Garcia Villa. Answer the questions below
SUBSTANTIALLY yet CONCISELY.

1. What does the story say about nursing a grudge against one’s neighbor? (10
points)

 The story say’s that nursing a grudge against one’s neighbor is not good. It
could bring your life to misery. We should learn to forgive and forget what
happens in the past. There is always a room for forgiveness. Only God himself
can judge us.

2. What made Iking wonder if his mother could really pray? (10 points)

 Iking really wonder if his mother could pray because he found his mother as
a cruel and a woman whom crushed her soul because of what happens in the
past.

3. What does the “fence” stand for? Why and how should that be removed? (10
points)

 The fence was built as a blockage for an enemy. In this story AlingBiang first
built the fence for the reason that she is avoiding AlingSebia and she don’t
want to talk to her for the reason that AlingSebia had a hidden love affair to
the husband of AlingBiang.

4. How do you describe the childhood life of the two innocent children? Do they
deserve that kind of life? (10 points)

 The two children on the story had a very boring childhood life. They do not
deserve this kind of life. They should not be affected on the rivalry of
AlingBiang and AlingSebia. They should have gone outside the fence and see
the real beauty of the world.
5. If you are to end the story, how will you end it after the death of Iking and why
such ending? (10 points)

 I really like to end the story that AlingBiang should realize her mistake to the
past. She should realize that his anger puts her to a different world and
making her to such a cruel woman and a woman that has no soul. She should
open her eyes to how the beautiful the world is. After listening to the sound
of music made by AlingSebia daughter, she should see and appreciate it like
how Iking’s does. She should see also how the cicadas and other insects
accompanied with the music made by AlingSebia daughter and appreciate
how beautiful the nature was and appreciate how our God created this
perfect world.
