Out of My Mind written by Draper, S. (2010). Atheneum Books for Young Readers.

This book is about a girl who has a photographic memory, which means she can remember every single
detail about all of her experiences. She also has a higher IQ than some adults and her classmates. By the
way, she also has cerebral palsy, but that’s the only thing everyone around her sees. This book goes
through her experiences of how everyone sees her as mentally challenged just because she can’t walk or
talk. This book teaches an important message to everyone who reads it that just because someone is
different doesn’t mean that they are dumb or somehow less than anyone else.

I Have Asthma written by Moore-Mallinos, J. (2007). B.E.S. Publishing.


The main character has asthma, but what does that mean exactly? How can adults teach children about
asthma to where both kids who have it and kids that don’t understand what they are going through?
This book is more of an information book that teaches about inhalers, allergens, and other things that
can affect a child who has asthma. It has many pictures to help explain to young elementary students
what asthma encompasses.
Emmanuel’s Dream written by Thompson, L. (2015). Illustrated by S. Qualls. Schwartz and
Wade.
This story follows the true story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, a man who was born with only one fully
formed leg in Ghana, West Africa. This is his journey of how people first thought of him as cursed to at
the end of the story he was seen as a hero. His built his own disability awareness in Ghana by biking all
400 miles of his country and spreading his message that disability also means ability.

Susan Laughs written by Willis, J., and Tony Ross (2000). Henry Holt and Co.
This story is about a little girl named Susan. The book goes through what Susan does and feels in a
rhyming scheme. Children are able to relate to all of Susan’s thoughts and feelings and it’s not until the
end where they learn that she is also in a wheelchair. Students learn about all the amazing things Susan
can do just like them regardless of her disability.

Exclamation Point written by Solano, S. (2017). Createspace Independent Publishing

This book follows a little boy who has a scar on his chest that looks like an exclamation mark. He got the
scar during surgery for his CHD (congenital heart disease). This book shows children that even with CHD,
he can still do everything that other kids can do while also showing that children who have scars
shouldn’t be ashamed of them but be proud of them.
