Present Continuous
The Present Continuous is for telling an action you do in the present, in the moment. You
have to use the Subject + Verb to be + Verb with ‘ing’ + complement. Here, the ing form
gives the (ando,endo,indo; In Spanish)... But, it works only if there is a verb to be before
the verb with ‘ing’.

For example,

1. I am running in the park with my friends.

2. You are eating a hamburger.
3. She is studying French in a Language Centre.

Activity
Complete the sentences using Present Continuous with the following words. There is an
example.
 Eg: I go to the park…=> I am going to the park.

 It works well… =>______________________

 They play soccer...=>______________________
 I listen to music…=>______________________
 I read the most interesting book in the world… =>
_________________________________________
 The students study English with the computer…=>
_________________________________________
 My parents take care of us while we travel abroad…=>
_________________________________________
 My computer doesn’t work due to it was under the rain…=>
_________________________________________
 The clown makes me laugh at loud…=>
_________________________________________
 The guitar sounds beautifully during the song…=>

 The cellphone and the TV show weird images when they are turned on…=>

- Past Simple
The Past Simple is used to say the action we did in the past. Something already happened
in the past (Yesterday, last week, last year, previously, before, etc...)
We have to recognize there are two kinds of words, Regular and Irregular verbs.
Regular Verbs they talk about the past but they finish in -d, -ed, -ied (when the verb
finishes in ‘y’ we erase it and we change for ’ied’): For example =>
Study=Studied
Play => Played
Watch => Watched
Wash => Washed
Look => Looked

Irregular verbs change totally or maintain the same word. For example,
Buy => Bought
Fly => Flew
Run => Ran
Cut => Cut
Think => Thought
Go => Went

Activity
Change the following sentences to Past Simple. Be careful if the verb is a regular or an
irregular verb. Be supported by a verb list.
 I ____ (draw) a beautiful picture.
 She ____(go) to the cinema with her friends.
 We _____ (watch) TV in her living room.
 They _____ (open) their book on page 64.
 You ______ (create) a new project for the school.
 He ________ (sing) the most recongnize song.
 Andrew and Michael _________ (work) together for the activity they _____ (have)
to do for finishing the course.
 Last night, my uncle ________ (drive) on the road to arrive to Santiago, but he
___________ (not/notice) car’s tire ______ (be) without air.
 My friends and I ______ (be) happy due  we _____ (see) each other again and we
_______ (meet) at a cafè near home.

- Past Continuous
Here, it talks about something done in the past but that action was developed in a
continuous way. The only aspect to notice and find the difference with Present Continuous
is to change the verb to be in Present (am,are,is) to the Past Simple (was, were) and the
verb with ‘ing’ form.

Present Past

Am---------------------------------------------------- Was
-

Are Were
----------------------------------------------------

Is ----------------------------------------------------- Wass
For example, we have one action in present continuous

She is reading her favourite book on her bed.

Here, you just change the verb to be to Past Simple and you have a sentence in Past
Continuous:

She was reading her favorite book on her bed. (Notice here we talk about in the past)

Activity
A. Read the sentences and rewrite them using the past continuous:
 50 years ago, Tom read The New Yorker every morning with a coffee and a piece
of bread =>
__________________________________________________________________
____
 My friends and I are playing soccer at the stadium as the best sport team in the city
=>
__________________________________________________________________
____
 Rosario works at the office on Friday until 7 o’clock =>
__________________________________________________________________

- Fill the blanks to complete the text and give it coherence to its sense:

(refuse) to agree to this stipulation, then the Academy keeps the statuette. Academy
Awards not protected by this agreement _______ (have) _______ (be) sold in public
auctions and private deals for six-figure sums.

Activity
3. Modal Verbs (Give advice and recommendations)
The Modal Verbs are the words, which help us to understand the sentence we are saying.
Each one of the verbs represents a specific meaning or context about the sentence idea.

Must = Obligation (Debe)

Should = Recommendation (Debería)
Can = Ability (Poder hacer algo)
Could = Possibility (Podría hacer algo)
Would = Probability (We add an ‘ía’ for each verb)
Have to = Obligation to do a task (Tener que hacer algo)
Might = Probability (60% Sure) (Tendría que hacer algo)
May = Probability (40% Sure) (Tendría que hacer algo)
Will = Future (Not a certain future)

Read the sentences below and put a Modal verb between the Subject and the Verb of
each sentence and look at the context, is it different? or is it the same?
Example:
>> I play soccer in the park with my friends. (This is the base sentence)

I can play soccer in the park with my friends.

They could play soccer in the park with my friends.
He would play soccer in the park with my friends.
She should play soccer in the park with her friends.

Are they the same? or are they different? Notice they don’t change, it doesn’t matter if I
mention 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person.
Activity
Write on each line the same sentence, but using the different subjects (I, You, We, They,
He, She, It) and using the modal verbs: Should, Could, Can, Would, Will, Must, Have to,
May, Might.

I do the test.

Application
Underline the best modal verb to give coherence to the text:

As we get older and when we think about our past we sometimes ponder the things that
we should/can have done. And we also may/shall regret those things we did badly and
the mistakes we made. In reality, we be able to/can always learn from our mistakes and
hope to never make them again. For example, if I failed a test because of a lack of study,
the next test I will/must hope to pass because of hard work. Remember too that some
regrets are not based in reality and we must/may waste time thinking that they
are. Would/should I have really not have been involved in a car crash if I had been driving
more slowly? After all, the other driver ought to/will have been concentrating and not
playing with their radio. We have to/would be honest with ourselves and live in the now.
The only things we used to/can control are the things happening now, in this moment.
