Jose Rizal had his early education in Calamba and Binyan.

 It was a typical schooling that a
son of an ilustrado family received during his time, characterized by four R’s
reading, writing,arithmetic, and religion. Instruction was rigid and strict. Knowledge was forced i
nto the minds of thepupils by means of the tedius memory method aided by the teachers whip. 
Despite of the Spanish
system of elementary education, Rizal was able to acquire the necessary instruction preparator
y for college work in Manila and abroad. Even if Rizal was said to be born a physical weakling, ro
se tobecome an intellectual giant not because of, but rather in spite of, the outmoded and back
wardsystem of instruction obtaining in  the Philippines during the last decaded of Spanish regim
e. I started my early education in where I was born and raised by my parents, in Cebu City. I don
ot belong to the ilustrado family just like Jose Rizal and so my parents were able to send me in a
public elementary school instead. My early education is one of my memorable moments during 
myschool days because I can really say that I really enjoy my childhood where we, students are 
free toplay. Not like the same way as what typical schooling during the time of Jose Rizal where 
studentsare used to whip so that they will learn. During my school days, we are free to play and 
teachers
dont force students. I can really say that learning is really fun and enjoyable during my school d
aysin my elementary. The teachers are really friendly and so we have the courage to attend the 
classeven if our class starts as early as 7 o’clock in the morning, we still have the like to go to sc
hool. The first teacher of Rizal was his mother, who was a remarkable woman of good character 
and fine culture. On her lap, Jose Rizal learned at the age of three the alphabet and the prayers. 
DonyaTeodora was patient, conscientious, and understanding. It was she who first discovered t
hat her sonhad a talent in poetry. She encourages Jose Rizal to write poems, to lighten the mon
otony of memorizing the ABC’s and to stimulate her son’s imagination, she related many stories
. As JoseRizal was grown older, his parents employed private tutors to give him lessons at home
. There werethree tutors that Jose Rizal had, namely first, Maestro Celestino, the next one is Luc
as Padua andlastly an old man named Leon Monroy. Unfortunately, Maestro Leon Monroy died 
five months later and so Jose Rizal’s parent decided to send their gifted son to a private school i
n Binian. My first teacher, just like Jose Rizal is also my mother. My mother is really good inmat
hematics and English. She is the one who taught me first how to count numbers. My mother isn
ot really that patient like the mother of Jose Rizal, since she was busy with her job, which I reall
yunderstand. I started to read with the help of my elder sister. She taught me to read because s
he waspatient enough for teaching me. She is the one who taught me to read, and to write. Not 
like JoseRizal, I don’t have private tutors or teachers; I had only my sister, and my mother with 
me who
taught me to read, to write and to count numbers. My parents started to send me to school wh
en Iwas six years old for grade one. During that time, our schools really don’t accept children for 
gradeone below six years of age, but then when I enrolled and they interviewed me, I am really 
talkativechild and very active.  And so they decided to accept me. Jose Rizal left Calamba for Bi
an to school there. He was accompanied by his brother,Paciano who was acted as his second fat
her. They proceeded to their aunt’s house, where Jose Rizal
was to lodge. Jose Rizal was become depressed because of homesickness. He remembers his
idolized mother, his solicitous sisters. He misses his town Calamba even if it’s
s not as wealthy asBinyan. My school during my elementary is just near to our house. For 30 mi
nutes rideapproximately, we can already reach the school. Not like Jose Rizal, I wasn’t
t send to any province.My parents are living here in the City and we have also house here and s
o I don¶t have to leave thehouse and part from my family to go to school. The City of Cebu is no
t as clean like the provincesince this is a City, but I always like to live here since I was already us
ed by way of living here andwith the people around. First day in Bian, Paciano brought his you
nger brother to the school of Maestro JustianoAquino Cruz. The school was in the house of the 
teacher, which was a small nipa hut about 30meters from the home of Jose Rizal¶s aunt. Pacian
o knew that the teacher is quite well since he was apupil of him before. He introduced Jose to t
he teacher after which he departed to return to Calamba. First day of school was really fun. I ca
n say that I really like to go to school every day. Myelementary school was about 30 minutes rid
e from our house. It is also where my elder sister enrolled when she was still in elementary. I re
ally love my teacher. Mrs. Boiser (I forgotten her name already). I always remember her kindnes
s, her goodness and her understanding to us her pupil.She doesn¶t like to be in a hurry, she tea
ches us slowly and never forced us to read or write when wedon¶t want. Just like Jose Rizal, Mr
s. Boiser and my mother were friends. They knew each other because Mrs. Boiser is also the tea
cher of  my elder sister when she was still in elementary. Mymother already knew that Mrs. Boi
ser is really good and so she decided to enroll me under her as her pupil. In academic studies, Jo
se beat all Bian boys. He surpassed them all in Spanish, Latin, andother subjects. Some of his ol
der classmates were jealous of his intellectual superiority. Theywickedly squealed to the teache
r whenever Jose had a fight outside the school, and even told lies todiscredit him before the tea
cher¶s eyes. Consequently the teacher had to punish Jose. Even if he wasa good boy, the day wi
ll not end if he hasn¶t take five or six blows from his jealous classmates. 
 
During my elementary days, I am not the smartest pupils, not like Jose Rizal; I was in themiddle 
rather. As I had remembered, even though I am not the smartest, my teacher used to praiseme 
because I learn quickly whenever we have new lessons. Not like Jose Rizal, I don¶t have jealousf
riends who tease on me but rather lots of friends who were my classmates. We used to play dur
ingour recess time or after the class while waiting for our parents to fetch us from school. That i
s why, Ican say that my elementary school days were really fun and I enjoy it a lot. Jose Rizal rec
eived a letter from his sister Saturnina informing him of the arrival of thesteamer Talim, which 
would take him from Bian to Calamba. Upon reading the letter, he had apremonition that he w
ould not return to Bian, so that he became sad. He prayed in the town church,collected pebble
s in the river for souvenirs, and regretfully bade farewell to his teacher andclassmates. The last 
memoirs of my elementary are when I was finally graduating student from grade six.I was happ
y at the same time little bit sad because I and my friends will also bade farewell to eachother. Ju
st like Jose Rizal, I feel sad because I don¶t know if I could see them again. As our farewellparty, 
we organize a party with my barkadas and together we have picnic to have our last moment of 
bonding with each other. As our elementary moment has to end, I know that our friendship will
remain forever. Jose Rizal, accompanied by his brother Paciano went to Manila. He took the ent
ranceexaminations in Christian doctrine, arithmetic, and reading at the College of San Juan de L
etran, andpassed them. He returned to Calamba to stay a few days with his family and to attend 
the townfiesta. His father, who first wished him to study at Letran, changed his mind and decide
d to send himto Ateneo instead. At first, Father Magin Fernando, who was a college registrar,ref
used to admithim, however with the intercession of Manuel Xerez Burgos, nephew of Father Bu
rgos, he wasreluctantly admitted at the Ateneo. After graduation from elementary, I, together 
with my mother accompanied me to take theentrance examination to enroll the near secondar
y school, the Abellana National School, which wasnear also to my elementary school before. It 
will take 20 minutes also to ride from house to school.Just like Jose Rizal, the first decision of m
y mother was not to enroll to that school. But later on,since it was also near to our house, she c
hose it because the expense is little bit cheaper compare tothe private high school. Well, not lik
e Jose Rizal, I don¶t find the hard time entering the school, sinceafter taking the examination; I 
pass and ready to enroll for my first year in high school. The system of education given by the Je
suits in the Ateneo was more advanced than thatother college in that period. It trained the char
acter of the student by rigid, discipline and religiousinstruction. It promoted physical culture, hu
manities, and scientific studies. Aside from academiccourses, leading to the degree of Bachelor 
of Art, it offered vocational courses in agriculture,
 
commerce, mechanics and surveying. Students were divided into two groups, namely; RomanE
mpire consisting of (internos) boarders, and the Carthaginian Empire composed of externos (no
n-boarders). The Ateneo students in Rizal¶s time wore a uniform which consisted of hemp-
fabrictrousers and striped cotton coat. The coat material was called rayadillo. Jose Rizal school i
s for ilustrado family, thus, for rich family. Since we don¶t belong to thislevel of society, my fam
ily can only afford to the school with less expense. And so, I was enrolled ina public secondary hi
gh school so that my parents can save money for my college after graduationon high school. Jus
t like the usual secondary school, my school is not as expensive as Jose Rizal, butwhen it comes 
to education and training, our school is very strict. Just like Jose Rizal, we have alsorigid disciplin
e, physical culture and scientific studies. But our school is not that religious as JoseRizal school i
n Ateneo. Abellana National School also offer training for those who want to learnculinary arts, 
handcrafts, and mechanic or refrigeration, you can enroll there even if you are not aregular stud
ent for cheaper tuition. Our sections were also divided into 2 groups, the trade sectionsand the 
general sections. The trade sections consist of sections letters A to J whereas the generalsection
s consist of sections numbers 1 to 11. There were many sections there, the highest section for tr
ade starting from A up and for the general from 1 up. Jose Rizal¶s first day in Ateneo heard a M
ass at the college chapel and prayed fervently toGod for guidance and success. When the Mass 
was finished, he went to his class,where he saw agreat number of boys, Spaniards, mestizos an
d Filipinos. Rizal¶s first professor in the Ateneo was Fr.Jose Bech. Being a new comer and knowi
ng little Spanish, Rizal was placed at the bottom of theclass. He was externo, hence he was assig
ned to the Carthaginians, occupying the end of the line.After the first week, Jose Rizal progresse
d rapidly. At the end of the month, he became the³emperor´. He was the brightest pupil in the c
lass, and he was awarded a prize. He was proud of itbecause it was the first prize he ever won a
t  Ateneo. In the second half of his first year in Ateneo,Rizal did not try hard enough to retain his 
academic supremacy which he held during the first half of the term. This is because he resented 
some remarks of his professor. He placed second at the end of the school year, although all his 
grades were still marked ³Excellent´. On my first day in Abellana National School, I was a little bi
t nervous and shy because Iknow that I will be meeting new faces, new people with new charac
ters. I am also afraid if I couldnot make new friends. But later on, since we are really strangers t
o each other, I was surprisebecause my classmates were also friendly, and then we started to e
xchanged conversation, hence thefeeling of nervousness was eliminated. During my first year al
so, just like Jose Rizal, was the firsttime I ever receive a reward from my studies. I am one of the 
top students from our class. Althoughnot like Jose Rizal as he was the top, I placed as the 8
th
top students in our class. I am very happythat time. Even though I placed as one of the top, I stil
l continue to study very hard so that my rank will increase. But after the final grading, I was a litt
le bit disappointed because we our teacher didn¶t
 
recognized our grades and she didn¶t place any top students in her list. But, I feel better though
,since I also got high grades from her as my final grade. At the end of the school year, Jose Rizal 
returned to Calamba for summer vacation. He didnot particularly enjoy his vacation because his 
mother was in prison. To cheer him up, his sister Neneng (Saturnina) brought him to Tanawan 
with her. This did not cure his melancholy. Withouttelling his father, he went to Santa Cruz and 
visited his mother in prison. He told of his brilliantgrades at the Ateneo. She gladly embraced he
r favorite son. When the summer vacation ended, Rizalreturned to Manila for his second year te
rm in Ateneo. Just like Jose Rizal, at the end of school year, I, together with my family spend our 
shortvacation in our province; northeast part of Cebu, in Medellin, Cebu. We spend our vacatio
n there atthe same time celebrating the fiesta there that lasted for one week. I always love to s
hare myachievements with my grandfather. I always tell him my good doing at school and my g
ood grades.After we spend a little sometimes there, we go back to the City. It was during the su
mmer vacation in 1874 in Calamba when Rizal began to take interest inreading romantic novels. 
As a normal teenager, he became interested in love stories and romantictales. The first novel of 
Rizal was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. His boyishimagination was stirred by 
the sufferings of Edmond Dantes (the hero) in prison, his spectacular escape from the dungeon 
of Chateau d¶If, his finding a buried treasure on the rocky island of MonteCristo, and his drama
tic revenge on his enemies who had wronged him. Rizal read numerous other romantic novels 
with deep interest. The reading habit helped to enrich his fecund mind. As avoracious reader, h
e read not only fiction, but also non-fiction. Just like Jose Rizal, during my high school days, I wa
s fond of reading romantic novels.Even though at my young age, I really loved romantic stories, 
like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beastand etc« And so I tried reading Tagalog pocket novels. May
be not like Rizal, but I was reallyfascinated by many pocket novels because of their love stories. 
The outline of the story was aboutthe rich guy who fell in love with the poor girl. Even though I 
still cannot relate with the stories, butI can feel that this story can really happen in real life. Afte
r refreshing and happy summer vacation, Jose Rizal went back to Manila for fourth year course. 
He became the interno in the Ateneo. One of his professor was Fr. Francisco de PaulaSanchez a 
great educator and scholar. He inspired young Rizal to study harder and to write poetry.He beca
me an admirer and friend of the slender Calamba lad, whose God-given genius he saw andrecog
nized. He had the highest respect to Fr.Sanchez whom he considered his best professor inAtene
o. Rizal, inspired by Fr. Sanchez, resumed his studies with vigor and zest. He topped all hisclass
mate in all subjects and won five medals at the end of the school term. He returned to
somewhat extremely happy and offered his
medals to his parents for he was able to repay his ³father somewhatsacrifices´. Just like Jose Riz
al, when I was in my fourth year in high school, I was inspired by one of myacademic teacher. Sh
e was really good, and even my other classmate was really encouraged to studybecause the wa
y she handles her student, we really give her the respect. We always do enjoyableactivities and 
we didn¶t get bored with her class, and also she gives good grades to us. After all mysacrifices, 
at last I graduated. I was extremely happy, even though I¶ve got no medal but I feel somuch ac
hievement and proud to present my diploma to my parents. All I can say about the life of Jose R
izal was, just like me, Rizal was also just like anordinary student like me. With all his achievemen
t he got, he work very hard for it and he reallydeserves it. He was a great man with lots of achie
vements in life at his young age. He came from arich family but his attitude doesn¶t affect by hi
s status in life and remained humble all the time. Thatis why God has given him with lots of bles
sings. Now I realized that, it doesn¶t matter your status insociety, whether you¶re rich or poor 
as long as you have the courage to learn and the willingness toacquire more learning, surely yo
u can be just like Jose Rizal who had remained humble in spite of his status in life and with his a
chievements.
