JIMMY BOYLE

James W. Boyle was born in Penang in 1922.

Jimmy Boyle, as he was more popularly known,
was of Eurasian descent and received his
education at St. Xavier’s Institution. Later, after
graduating from Raffles College in Singapore, he
returned to his alma mater as a teacher where he
taught English among other subjects.
He was a big name in the Malaysian
entertainment industry. A jazz musician and
composer of many well-known tunes, his most
recognisable work, called Putera Puteri is still
performed by local artistes today. Boyle was an
accomplished pianist, composer, and arranger. He
performed his music for radio and television. The
English Service of Radio Malaysia used to have regular programmes featuring the Jimmy
Boyle Trio. His proudest moment was said to be when the Malaysian flag, as we know it
today, was raised to one of his tunes, Kemegahan Negaraku. Among his other notable
compositions were Jauh Jauh, Rayuan Mesra, Bunga Negara, Gema Rembulan and Sungai
Pahang. He was conferred the Ahli Mangku Negara or Member of the Order of the
Defender of the Realm in 1968.
His music was not unknown outside Malaysia. He was hailed as composer and arranger
for the Classical Saxophone Quartet of Northwestern University as well as the Kansas
University Brass Ensemble. The British Broadcasting Corporation and Voice of America
both aired his music. International jazz musicians like Charles Lloyd and influential jazz
trombonist Jack Teagarden regarded him highly.
Jimmy Boyle has immortalised the soul and spirit of Malaysia and her people through
his music. He made a huge contribution to the arena of music in our country. He is
indeed one of our most precious musical gems. He passed away in May 1971.
