THE SEPTUAGINT
Richard A. Taylor
The following vocabulary lists are intended to provide basic help with Greek vocabulary encountered in the
reading selections from the Septuagint that have been assigned for this course. The English glosses are based on
the following lexical sources: Johan Lust, Erik Eynikel, and Katrin Hauspie, Greek-English Lexicon of the
Septuagint, rev. ed. (Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 2003); T. Muraoka, A Greek-English Lexicon of the
Septuagint (Louvain: Peeters, 2009); Gary Alan Chamberlain, The Greek of the Septuagint: A Supplemental
Lexicon (Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 2011); Henry George Liddell and Robert Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon,
revised and augmented by Henry Stuart Jones with the assistance of Roderick McKenzie, with a supplement,
1968, 9th ed. (Oxford: Clarendon, 1940). These lists have been compiled in a rather haphazard fashion and are not
necessarily based upon frequency of word occurrence.
