Design by

Difficulty: Easy Size: The foal has a height of 14 cm (5,5 inches)

Material:
1. crochet hook: 2.5 mm
2. Catania wool by Schachenmayr in any color or any other yarn
3. Fiberfill
4. Sewing needle
5. For the mane and the tail, it is better to use a yarn which is loosely spun, so that it can be
easily combed
6. Comb or animal brush to comb the yarn
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
R – round or row
sc – single crochet
Number x sc – the number tells you how many times you make a single crochet in each stitch
inc - make two single crochet in one stitch
dec - two stitches crochet together with a sc
sl st - slip stitch
Note:
- The ears are crocheted in spiral rounds
- The foal is crocheted in rows. Ch 1 and turn at the end of each row.
- Do not crochet the foal with invisible decrease. Crochet the regular decrease: Insert your
hook into the stitch and pull the yarn. Insert hook into next stitch and pull. Yarn over, pull
the yarn through all 3 loops on hook.
- It is important that your work is as tight as you can make it, because you don’t want to see
the stuffing through your work. If you see holes try working with a tighter tension or go
down a hook size.
- Yarn ends do not need to be sewn; you can hide them inside the foal.

Crochet two pieces of the foal and then crochet the pieces together:

Lay both parts on each other and crochet them together with tight sc stitches. See the next
page:
4

Start at the back of the foal and crochet both parts

together. Stuff the foal continuously with fiberfill.
Attention: The legs of the foal must be stuffed very
tight, so that the foal can stand upright.
Crochet over the outer corners of the legs sc, ch, sc in
the same stitch. Cut the thread, leave a long thread to
sew the tail with it.

Making the tail and the mane

For the tail you need about 10 threads with a length of

about 20 cm / 7,8 inches from a wool that was not spun
too tight. Then gently comb the threads with a comb or a
brush for animals and unravel the threads. Brush them
from the bottom to the top. Mostly the threads break off
a bit when combing. Comb very carefully and with
patience. The result is worth it!

Then tie the threads in the middle with another thread,

fold the ends together and sew the tail to the foal.

Sew the ears to the head. The pictures show the exact position of the ears:

For the mane you need about 10 combed threadswith a length of 20 cm / 7,8 inches . Knot
the threads to the head - starting at the forehead, see picture.

You can shorten the mane a bit,

or just leave it that way.

Have fun crocheting!
