1. What is Philosophy?

Philosophy is a combination of two Greek words, philo sophia, meaning lover of

wisdom. In ancient times a lover of wisdom could be related to any area where intelligence
was expressed. In contrast to this, some modern definitions restrict philosophy to what can
be known by science or the analysis of language.

2. How can Philosophy help you?

It teaches critical thinking, close reading, clear writing, and logical analysis; it uses
these to understand the language we use to describe the world, and our place within it.
Different areas of philosophy are distinguished by the questions they ask. In addition, it helps
us to enhance our ability to solve problems, our communication skills, our persuasive powers,
and our writing skills. Below is a description of how philosophy helps us develop these various
important skills.
