2 Safety precautions
The user‘s manual serves as an independent document for the operation and
maintenance of the excitation system. This section mentions the safety precautions
which must be taken in order to ensure safe operation and during maintenance work.
Further safety regulations are included in the respective sections.

2.1 Safety regulations

Warning signs are affixed to the cabinet doors. They warn of:
• dangerous operating voltages present in the control cabinets (over 50 volts),
• dangerous voltages occurring in the power section (over 1000 volts),
• extremly dangerous short circuit capability present in the power section (over 10kA).
The main power is not protected by fuses.
These signs are intended to point out that the doors may not be opened during
operation:

Countermeasures should be taken (e.g. lock switching function through use of key-
switches) in order to prevent systems which have been switched off from being
accidentally switched on through control errors or by third parties. In addition, before
switching on, the operating personnel must ensure that the system is ready for
operation and that the cabinet doors are properly locked.
This manual covers normal operation, in both automatic and manual mode. It cannot
cover special operating modes such as short-circuit tests, auxiliary power inputs etc.
These operating modes require comprehensive knowledge of all parts of the
installation (excitation, generator etc.). They can therefore only be carried out by a
specialist.

• Operating personnel are not permitted to carry out any manipulations inside
the control cabinets.
• Maintenance and repair work may only be carried out by specially trained
personnel.

2.2 Requirements for operating personnel
• The operator must be familiar with this document.
• He must understand the effect of excitation on the line variables (generator voltage,
reactive power etc.).
• He must be familiar with the control elements, the operating and alarm displays for
the excitation system, both at their workplace (control room, remote operation etc.)
and on the excitation equipment itself (local operation).
• He must understand the effects of the commands on the excitation equipment and
be able to interpret the alarms in the control room.

2.3 Requirements for the personnel carrying out work

• The maintenance personnel must be familiar with this document.
• They must be familiar with the operation of the installation and trained to carry out
maintenance and repair work.
• They must be familiar with the control elements, operation and alarm signals for the
excitation system, both on the excitation equipment itself (local control) and in the
control room (remote control etc., see operating manual).
• They must be informed about the power supply concept for the excitation
equipment as well as emergency shutdown measures and must be capable of
turning off the system in case of emergency.
• They must be familiar with the accident prevention measures at their workplace and
must be trained in first aid and fire-fighting.
